By the limited info you posted it seems you changed the settings to hardware and your machine is saying "not gonna happen". Did you check the specs? Is your pc older?

Just a guess.

Sounds like the game may be having trouble recognising your graphics hardware. Try forcing the game to run in software mode. To do this, add the following command to the target box of your SimCity 4 Deluxe shortcut:

    -intro:off -d:software -CPUCount:1 -CustomResolution:enabled -rWIDTHxHEIGHTx32

Replace WIDTH and HEIGHT with the your monitor's native resolution. As for the other commands, the -intro:off skips the game's intro sequence, and -CPUCount:1 runs the game using one CPU core.

Once done, it should look like this:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps\SimCity 4.exe" -intro:off -d:software -CPUCount:1 -CustomResolution:enabled -rWIDTHxHEIGHTx32

Remember to add a space after the game's installation path (in green). If this doesn't work, try replacing -d:software with  -d:DirectX .

This will force the game to run in hardware mode.

Isn't that related to an incompatibility issue with some ATI graphics cards? Just a feeling. :lost:

EDIT: Cyclone Boom seems to have solved the famous problem.

Right-click on the SC4 desktop shortcut, and select Properties.  Click on the Compatibility tab, then look at the Compatibility Mode box.  Place a check mark in the box where it says "Run this program in compatibility mode for", and then select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" from the list of options.  Click Apply, then OK.  See if that helps.

And if you are still having trouble, run dxdiag from your run box to check out your multimedia hardware.  It would be useful if you took a screen shot of the first page of this, and posted it.

And by the way, what is the version of the exe you are running?  Open windows explorer and search for SimCity 4.exe.  Hover your mouse over this and report the build level is gives you.  We should know if your game is current.

Sounds like it is time for a new hard disk.  Get a backup first.  If you don't have an external HDD, this is the time to get one.

You won't get Program Files (x86) if you installed the game before this came in.  It doesn't matter, anyway, as the path is taken care of by the Registry.

Did you ever find the version number for your game?  Use windows explorer to find SimCity 4.exe and hover your mouse over it.  It will show your version.  On XP right click the file, select properties and open the version tab.
