The best skyline in the United States (other than New York, of course) is Chicago. By far.

I don't think a skyline needs (many) skyscrapers an so to be good/beautiful, for that, my favourite skyline is the one of Dresden, Germany:

I think part of the problem with the NYC skyline is that so many of the buildings in it are rather old, and look it due to the architectural style. The Empire State Building, The Chrysler Building... you'd never build a building that looks like that today. All the asian skylines are rather new, and so the buildings are all glassy and shiny, as opposed to giant concrete and steel boxes with windows. So they look more appealing to today's viewers. Some of Lower manhattan looks good though, the World Finaincial center and the new 7 WTC especially... Now if they ever get that freedom tower built, that'll be the big step....
The Path trains restored WTC service a while ago, but the 1 train won't be stopping there until January or Ferbruiary '06. It still goes through the site, though. At least people aren't bickering over design and tactics with the subways...21.gif20.gif

Since ESB and Chrysler are generally regarded as Art Deco masterpieces, that's pretty unfortunate.

Duke,

You bring up an interesting point about the modern skylines in Asia vs. some of the more historic ones in America.  I tend to like skylines like Chicago or New York (more historic in that the biggest buildings tend to be older than 20 years) more.

It will be interesting to see how these two skylines look when more modern skyscrapers are introduced... the modern buildings may look great... but they may stick out like a sore thumb too.

And Louisville,

I disagree... I think Chicago's skyline is better than NY's.  44.gif

To me, its a tie between NY and HK

In order from there:

2. Chicago
3. Singapore
4. Toronto (without the CN Tower, it wouldn't be so great.)
5. Sydney
6. Los Angeles (looks cool at night)
7. Houston
8. Frankfurt
9. Miami
10. Seattle
11. Philly
12. Melbourne
13. Tokyo
14. San Fransisco
15. Dallas
16. Calgary
17. Montreal
18. Dubai
19. Denver
20. Edmonton
21. Vancouver
22. San Diego
23. Atlanta
24. Boston
25. London UK
26. Detroit

I prefer the ESB or Chrysler Building any day over the new modern towers. They look much better in person, IMO.

The mix of old and new is what I like best about New York. Right next to a 100 year old brownstone you can find a brand-new shiny thing.

I think the Empire State Building and Chrysler building are both beautiful towers. A lot better than the boring, modern boxes that replaced a lot of older buildings in NY.

And for the record, I think the new design for the Freedom Tower is alright, nothing stunning but a lot better than the original one, with that stupid hollow crap on top.

...anyway my vote goes to NY.

This is my favorite skyline.  (Maybe that is just because i live here)

The City of Saint Louis, with what I think has one of the most beautiful monuments in the world, The Jefferson National Memorial Expansion (The Gateway Arch).  I think the skyline is also nice.

I think if you were looking for the best historical skyline in the US, after New York and Chicago, you'd have to look at Detroit. While it's had more than its share of problems, at one time in the mid 1900s it was the THIRD largest city in the US! (That's right!) So it has a lot of really great, big old buildings ...

It's just a matter of preference or where you live. For me I gotta go with my beloved New York.36.gif I love the Art Deco timeless feel of the city. Manhattan is interesting because it really has two skylines; Downtown and Midtown. I also love the density of the skyline and how it looks different from other parts of the city. Viewing Manhattan from Bay Ridge Brooklyn isn't the same as viewing Manhattan from Long Island City Queens.

Speaking of boroughs, Manhattan isn't the only borough with a skyline. Queens and Brooklyn have their own little downtown skylines. It will be interesting to see how they shape up in the decades to come.

A skyline has to have more than tall buildings to catch my attention. Hong Kong is a great skyline with all the brightly-lit, pristine buildings, but what makes it so much better (at least for me) is that it is set against those towering hills. A truly breathtaking skyline consists of a combination of beautiful buildings and a naturally beautiful environment.

Other examples include:

Seattle (Mt. Rainier in far right)

<ahttp://img443.imageshack.us/img443/1986/seattlerainier8bw.jpg width=800 align=baseline>

Yokohama, Japan (Mt. Fuji in bottom left.......this picture doesn't really do the skyline justice.....)

<ahttp://img443.imageshack.us/img443/8220/tohsanbashi18kz.jpg width=800 align=baseline>

Portland (Mt. Hood in background)

And, of course, New York City is the best. I won't put a picture because it is so well known...

If anyone wants to vote for the best skyline in North America, go to my poll thing in City Building Concepts.  My favorite city is Dubai or Calgary.

    Cheers!

You haven't lived until you've driven up the Harbor Freeway on a smog-free day and seen the San Gabriels rising behind downtown Los Angeles.  On its own, it cannot compete with Chicago (let alone Hong Kong), but I can't think of too many cities in the world that are more geographically dramatic.

Personally I like the Singapore skyline! I might be bias here.lol But I also think that HK is definitely one of the best skylines in the world.

Singapore has really bold plans to create an entire new downtown at marina bay just adjacent to the existing CBD. There would be much more office space, condominums and shops, hotels, a new casino and shopping centres! Its really exciting! Finally singapore can compete with HK!
