For me, it would be, without a doubt, wouldn't consider anything else, took forever, no competition.

The Perfect Run - Super Mario Galaxy 2.

SPOILERS

The hidden final level, this required, in order, going over a death pit with yoshi, while avoiding bullet bills and other flying hazards, going across a switch maze where all need to be turned on, a cloud Mario electric wind assisted field, jumping over electric lasers and hitting the switches, a pull star area with paragombas and electric lazers, and then ere are 50 hammer bros and 3 boomerang bros at the end. What makes it so hard, you have 1 HP AND IF YOU DIE YOU NEED TO START AT THE BEGINNING!!!

Worms World Party: 16 level 5 AI (highest level) versus 2 human worms deathmatch game. Won the game, because the highest level AI plays perfect... and is very predictable due to that fact...

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I managed to complete ALL levels of the Orignial Lemmings game of 1991.

Can't think of the absolute hardest level I've ever done... But may be one of the levels in Battletoads.

Probably the most difficult/fun 'level' I've done is the bank robbery mission in GTA IV. It's so hard, but so much fun :D. Very 'rewarding' when you beat it, pun intended. :P

The hardest level in a video game? Without doubt it would be Tomb raider 'Underworld' the level in mexico, all the inca traps, bugs and living dead, it was hell to play and i never did get it exactly right.

Second only to that is Tomb raider anniversary 'St Franiss folly'; i just got through it; IT TOOK SEVEN HOURS OF VERY NERVOUS GAMEPLAY!!!

God's dammit, that was hard work.

Funny thing is i thought TR 'Legend' was easy by comparison.

Any singleplayer mission in Operation Flashpoint or Arma. One hit by a bullet and youre dead, with shitty AI teammates, clunky interface, imprecise weapons and an enemy that is good at hiding.

Just like I suppose a real firefight in a war would be like.

Not putting this over the Perfect Run, but it deserves a mention

The Goron part of the moon from Zelda: MajorasMask

Self explanatory, and I'm not too good with Goron, so....

Fighting Malkoran in Skyrim's The Break of Dawn quest. I died so many times fighting this jerk. I don't know if I was ill-equipped or if I just suck at Skyrim, but I got so angry and fed up I had to turn the difficulty down.

That would be the mission in GTA San Andreas where CJ has fly the stupid little model plane to kill the three guys in the bicycles and then land the plane before it runs out of gas. After several fruitless days I had to go against my personal beliefs and use a cheat to get past it!

That was the single dumbest mission in that game... You would think it would be something like robbing the bank at Caligula's or the final missions of the game... but nope, a bloody toy airplane... All those toy airplane missions were ridiculous

Another thing to add to my little list is the Hole of Heroes and the Dream Den from Pikmin 2.  The hole of heroes was hard due to the constant boss battles, and not to mention the boss (Raging Long legs) is deadly, fast, and big.  As for the Dream Den, the game's final level (i would switch the names of the Dream Den and the Hole of Heroes) the puzzles were challenging, and the strategies to do it perfect were fun and

    SPOILERS

The battle against Captain Louie is probably the hardest boss I have ever done in a video game.

Any singleplayer mission in Operation Flashpoint or Arma.

Haven't played Arma, but Operation Flashpoint was the most difficult game I ever played too.

to accomplish the mission "after montegnac" in the original game i needed several days, and the two addons were even more difficult

Its essentially Operation Flashpoint, only with more bugs I think.

Oh, now that I think of it, the original Delta Force is also pretty difficult. Pixels that can kill you in two shots if you don't look out :P Awesome game though :D

Going to have to go back to the old game "Robot Odyssey" for my hardest levels ever.  This is a game whose levels often featured mazes laid out as donuts or hypercubes.

One challenge is to hardwire a robot to navigate through an invisible minefield in a room inaccessible to the player.  There is, however, a player accessible map room, and one solution is for the player to navigate a second robot through the map room, and have that second robot radio navigation instructions to the robot in the minefield.  All of this has to be hardwire programmed using basic logic circuits.

I managed the invisible minefield, though my robots were probably wired in the most inelegant fashion possible.  At least they worked, even if it took weeks of rewiring.  However, I was stopped by a later level's flashing key puzzle.  A locked door requires as a key a radio signal whose on/off pulses matches a specific binary sequence.  There is a nearby light whose on/off flashing loop gives the necessary sequence, but the pattern is too fast for the player to match by hand.  You must hardwire your robot to match the lengthy flashing pattern of the light, and reproduce this pattern as radio pulses, all using the most basic of sensors and logic circuits.  I never made it past this door, and so never finished the game.  I understand now that one solution was that testing or reverse-engineering an earlier discovered microchip revealed that within its hidden circuitry was a sequential counter, and that you could use this chip to time and calibrate your radio pulses.  Without the chip, you would instead have to design and hardwire your own counting circuit from scratch.

Oh, I should point out this 1984 game was aimed towards young, early grade-school children.

Wow, someone hardwired their own ingame stereo recorder using burned custom chips as storage devices.  Uh, that is too much free time...

Oh, the abandonware "Robot Odyssey" has been freely ported to Java as "DroidQuest."  Maybe I will now finally beat that confounded radio key puzzle.

The Veni Vidi Vici trinket in the game VVVVVV.  Took two gaming sessions to finally do it.  The most annoying thing is when you make it through the whole course only to get twitchy and hit a spike right near the bottom over and over again.  (>_<)

Second is one that I haven't completed yet.  The Hell level in Cave Story+ for the proper ending.

You have to navigate a long and tricky level to reach the boss which is pretty hard to do without significant damage and then of course if you die during the boss fight you have to walk your way through it all again.

I've managed to get all the way to the boss but just can't quite beat him. All the videos I've watched for this level everyone is using a different weapon to the one I collected on this run through so I think I've possibly made it harder than I needed to.  I don't want to play through the game again to get the better weapon and unlike most games I play I only have so much patience for repeating this level in one session so it's been sitting on my unfinished games list taunting me.  :(

Red Revolution, the penultimate mission of the Soviet campaign in Red Alert 2. Your forces are strongly outnumbered by Yuri's, so you need to be quick and capture oil derricks. If you build the nuclear missile silo, Yuri will sent you an air armada of Kirov airships to wipe you out. And yes, Yuri has tons of defense systems.

That one actually has a little trick. I think he only sends in the Kirovs when you build certain things. Ive found that its easy to avoid the harder units by simply not building anything beyond a warfactory, and then simply spam battletanks and recruits.

I don't remember what it's called, but I would say the level in Super Mario 64 where you go in the cabin and do the ice slide thing.

The hardest level I've done was "The President Run" (Driver 1). No doubt this level is one of the hardest level of all games. This guy of the video was lucky, because sometimes the police throwns your car at middle air (~50 meters). I tried more than 110 times to beat this level.

Well, I don't think this mission is so hard, but it's funny because almost all GTA IV's missions are about Niko killing people for money (hitman style).

I think my choice would be first time I fought lavos in chrono trigger think first time i done that boss fight I was I think I died after a 30-40 min battle or so, epic :D

World of Warcraft was also difficult years ago, till theye started dumbing it down around 2nd expansion pack. Burning crusade had some very chalensing 5 player dungeons

also, some missions//levels in assassins creed were hard. Or maybe annoying, obnoxious and infuruatingly stupid would be better description. Follow some guy without being seen, but you're not allowed to do it from teh rooftops even though just about every trailer/cinematic has you running on rooftops, and you can spot your target from miles away with your eagle vision, but then suddenly with those follow missions if you climb a rooftop or get further then 20 meters you loose track, and if you get closer then 15 meters you are instanly spotted while oyu normaly blend in andbecome invisible if tehre are 2 npcs next to you.

And then tehre are those free-run missions where the camera gets stuck at weird angles and oyu have to jump in just the right direction with very little time to loose to figure out/look closly what direction to jump
