Smoke from smoke stacks

I've been away for awhile but have started to use the Lot Editor. I can make a factory lot with a smokestack. And I see there are smoke effects that I can place on the lot too. But I can't for the life of me figure out how to make the smoke come out of the smoke stack. If I place the little effect diamond inside the building, nothing happens. If I put it outside somewhere, smoke comes "out of nowhere" on the lot, but not out of the smokestack. What am I doing wrong with the Lot Editor? If I have posted this in the wrong forum, my apologies. There doesn't seem to be a way to place the little smoke effect icon above the smoke stack. Thanks!!!

Thanks, but I couldn't find it. The tab for Lot has the most options including elevation and depth. The tab for props has keys for placing props on a two-dimentional matrix. I don't see any tool to adjust the heighth of props. I am missing something.

How to adjust the height :

Use CTRL+↑ to raise the height of the object.

Use CTRL+↓ to lower the height of the object.

Placing effects on a lot can be tricky, and requires quite a bit of trial and error. Where the green effect icon is shown, isn't necessarily where the smoke will be displayed in game.

To position them, I recommend the following:

    1. Select the effect from the 'Props' menu and place it on the lot.

    2. Click the effect and drag it to an approximate position on the lot. Use the arrow keys to make minor adjustments.

    3. Then, as @jason leo says, use the Ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down keys to change its height. I recommend you raise it until the bottom just about touches the top of the chimney.
Note: If you want to speed this process, you can hold Shift down as well. This would be useful on taller buildings / structures.

    4. Save the lot and test it in game. Check to see the effect is correctly placed by rotating the game view.

    5. Return to the Lot Editor, to make any necessary adjustments.

    6. As I said, trial and error is required here, so you may have to repeat this process until it is positioned correctly.

If you need further clarification or assistance, please ask.
