After the release of SimCity, will we see expansion packs later on or will they go straight a SimCity 6 or whatever?

There'll probably be an oribtal bombardment of DLC. As I understand it, the game is releasing with two DLCs - Some Heroes and Villians thingy, and a Stereotypes of Europe set. Doubtless they'll follow it up with a variety of other building sets in order to diversify the game from Techo-California into Techno-California-with-like-a-pagoda-and-some-stuff-over-in-this-corner.

As for a proper, old style expansion pack, probably not. But then, they still release expansion packs from the Sims 3, so who knows?

We will get an expansion pack as they have done since Simcity 2000.

They will either pull a Simcity 3000, where you have to buy the ultimate version to get the new content .

Or

Do a Simcity 4 where the expansion pack contains the patches and new content is released a year later for $20 as a stand alone disc or you can buy the game + expansion pack for $30.

I'm pretty sure also that there will be a few patches, like all other games from Maxis. They want to bring this game so fast onto the market so fast that they don't have the time to test the games thouroughly, and it wouldn't surprise me that there will be add-ons. It's all a matter of making money. Logic.

;)

I am almost certain that there will be expansion packs in addition to DLC.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Probably different country city sets... maybe actual international city sets (like Tokyo, New York, Moscow)? maybe a transit expansion pack? maybe an expansion pack that offers larger regions to the possibility to have a country full of cities (you can name the capital, where that city will have special buildings)?

Hopefully it will be things that will make we want to buy the game at some point. Things such as terraforming, bigger cities, hills(lol), you know, core components :)

Don't worry, there are not delivering us a "full" game at first, just enough so we will be interest in it and just enough to give us the taste to buy it, but then the addons will be so that we almost "need" to buy them, they will contain all the good stuff, the stuff that will make the game more complete, more interesting, challenging and more fun. That's the way marketing works and it's a way to more or less "force" the customers to buy more. Don't think that a company like this makes all this for fun and/or to please the gamer. It happened with all the other games before.

    ;)

There will be good stuff in the addons, believe me. :golly:

SimCity 4 being a prime example of this with the release of Rush Hour.

Heh, true. It kinda shows how they are going to have to walk a fine line with supporting (and restricting initial) moddability. EA is not fond of "free" getting in the way of its revenue streams.

How much are you all willing to bet that it will be like The Sims 3, where you buy a small pack of misc. items? For example:

-Exotic Designs Pack (Contains 15 new buildings to construct in your city) - $6.99

-Terrain Pack (Contains 3 new terrains to construct your city on) - $3.99

    and so on.

If they do release an expansion pack, it'll probably be multiple ones, like The Sims 3. The Sims 3 contains an in-game store and expansion packs, so I wouldn't be surprised of both of the above options are in the game.

Haven't they've multiple expansion packs for every "The Sims" game though?

I wouldn't be shocked to see one or two expansion packs for SimCity but I don't expect it to be how they do it with 'The Sims'.

I'm guessing in the expansion packs they'll include new transportation options, new buildings, and if we're lucky, bigger maps.

I really hope it doesn't end up as bad as the sims 3. I decided to have a look at it because of steam sales, and if I wanted everything (including the base game) I'd have to pay $179.25. This is at 66% off. If I wanted to get all of that normally I'd have to pay about $537. Ridiculous.

That kind of question is variable IMO. If they have plans to make DLCs and Expansion packs for SC13, probably there´s no modding capabilities since a modder can take the DLC stuff and "mod" to people who dont have it. Or no mods will be allowed in this game, or they will need to see, avaliate and decide if any single mod can be used before released to everyone which will cut the fun by 98% hehehe since a "black hole garbage dump" for example would be a cheat.

But im sure there will be a transportation pack, bring back subway, monorail, elevated rail etc etc.

Yup, $20 map packs, special buildings, but also building styles, and so forth. Increasingly, I hope I am wrong, I get the idea that we will be allowed to mod, but that EA wants to ensure that customers do not get in the way of DLC strategy. What would be the value of the investment of making maps when users are crazy enough to make their own much more realistic maps? :P I'm sure we'll be able to edit building blocks, but whether that really is modding?

I'm sure there will be lots of DLC like, $10 for large map tiles! $10 for subways! $10 for 3 apartment buildings!

Ive spent $200+ on sims 2 and on sims 3. Its only logical that SC will be an easy $300 game for me. DLC will be a must since the core game will be so limited

Well, I can see why maps would be DLC/Official only because the placement of resources (why not have infinite coal?) and "boxes" would need to be safe from cheating.

Indeed, a big question though is whether they allow third party modding in these particular matters. It would be very easy to have a flag for type of map (public / private - cheats enabled yes / no), along those lines. Whether they do, well, I guess we will see.

To be honest, it would be rather emberassing if such a simple thing had not been considered for both ends of the spectrum, leaving just a case of "disallowed that's our cash cow".
