I read something about an OpenGL fix that allows the thumbwheel to be useable when navigating through the lots and hway pieces etc. I could have sworn when I played it years ago that it let you use the wheel? Any fixes?

Well, good luck with that. I get utter garbage when I try OpenGL. Could be my version is beyond the one the game is programmed for. I've noticed that OpenGL is subject to unannounced updates.

Ohhhhhh...wait a second. I just realized I misunderstood. I thought you meant scroll through the menus (like the Parks menu) using the mouse wheel. You mean replace the function of the TAB key (cycling through RHW pieces and such).

I have heard that it is possible to change this, but it's difficult. In fact I think it was recently brought up in one of the NAM support threads.

But it might only be possible to change it to another keyboard key. As far as using your mousewheel to do that goes, I haven't a clue. Sorry for confusing you.

Yes Indiana, I mean scrolling through the menus with the mouse wheel, not replacing the tab key

There is some doubt about the quality of the OpenGL programming in the game. Can you not use DirectX?

The OpenGL version of the game is unfinished, doesn't work properly and should not be used under any circumstances. Switch to the DirectX renderer.

Mouse wheel works fine with DirectX 9.0c. This will live quite happily beside the current version. Have a care with the mouse wheel. You can overload the command buffer and cause a CTD if you scroll too fast.

I have DirectX 11, and I can only scroll through the menus. When I try to scroll through the actual puzzle pieces, the map just zooms in and out. I haven't tried installing DX 9.0c because I figured DX 11 was an updated version. So why does it work for DX 9.0c but not for 11?

The program was actually written for DirectX 7, but 9.0c was the current one when the game was released. Upgrades sometimes degrade some capability or API that has been hard coded into the program. An extra library doesn't hurt.

I thought SimCity 4 at least required DirectX 8, then I checked on the minimal requirements:

Operating System: Windows XP/ME/2000/98 (Windows 95/NT not supported)

CPU: 500 MHz Intel Pentium III or AMD Athlon processor

    RAM: 128 MB

    CD/DVD-Rom Speed: 8X

Hard Drive Space: 1 gig plus space for saved games

Video: 16 MB video card, DirectX 7 compatible

    Sound: DirectX 7.0 compatible

    Input: Keyboard, mouse

    lolwut

    Legacy game indeed, Nonny.

When I try to scroll through the actual puzzle pieces, the map just zooms in and out.

Because that's what it's meant to do. The default action of the scroll wheel while not on particular UI elements is to zoom in and out.

You need to use Tab and Shift Tab to move through the tab rings.
