Very few users have hosted their images off site. As the site has been very slow these last few days, I would reccomend you start using external hosting. One of the best ways to do this is use Image Shack.

It allows images of most formats up to 750kb in size. Think of this as a free way to support the site you all love.

I would also like to point out, and remind people in general to keep images within 800x600. And if you see others posting an image beyond this, then please give them a friendly reminder that it needs to be 800x600. I had/have been removing quite a few images lately because they exceed the 800x600 limit, not just by new-comers, but also long-time members.

Cool web site.  It doesn't look like you need an accound or anything; just upload and go, right on the home page.  Very nice. 10.gif  I'll have to try it the next time I post an image.

hey EF does this site let you have pics aboce 800x600 because then i might use it more often...

Do you mean above?  If yes, then we don't allow pictures posted here to be above the limits.  This holds true for both on-site hosted and off.  It gets to be rather time consuming to check ALL pictures for a hosting location.  If people wouldn't be so lazy and stick to the rules then we could loosen them up some, but until that day comes we won't.

Is it possible to get temporary authority to clean up my building thread?  I know I can edit my own messages, but there are several others in there, especially requests with pictures, that are getting older, or already have been done.  I'd like to clean it up, and save space while I'm at it.  If others follow my lead, we could probably clear up quite a bit of space.  My thread is about 15 pages, I bet about 10 of which could be edited out.  I could just supply a list of those messages, but I don't think the admins want to spend time on those types of requests.

Goob,  we've had requests like that before and they are a pain to fulfill.  I'd love to do it for you, but I don't have that kind of time.  If it was a post or two that would be different, but when you need to give us a list you are out of luck.  About your only other option is to start a new thread if you don't like the clutter.

It seems to me if people post pictures at a lower resolution say something like 640x480 or 700x525 you could save a lot of space too...

i'll probably have to give that a shot myself. in fact, i might even enlargen a couple of my show-off images, just to give people a better look.

even if hosted off-site, it is a good idea to keep the images to a reasonable size. some of us don't have the greatest eyes in the world, and keep our desktop screen size so we can see easier (mine is 800 by 600, for example). if an image is more than 800x600, it pushes the window out just a little bit. not a big deal - but it takes the text with it. and it makes large paragraphs a huge pain to read, especially when you have long-winded people like me who use the return key infrequently.

on the other hand, even if images are hosted on site, it is a good idea to still keep the images within a reasonable size. the pictures in my journal have gone from 800x600 to around 410x370. in my opinion, the smaller images are more pallatable (yeah, i know, spelling mistake), and still very viewable.

Why use as many pictures as people do now?
I think it's rediculous to have about 30 pictures per post - that's just plain wasteful.
What's the point of showcasing your city from 10 different views when it is nothing but zones?

I agree. It's wasteful, and people should try to group as many pics as possible into one image. BTW, thanx @ EF for pointing out thta site!

Some good ideas.  Pretty much except for the beginning I have always hosted my stuff (CJ and BAT) off-site.  Comcast gives subscribers 25MB, which seems to be more than enough.  I'm at about 16MB now, and probably 5-6 MB is stuff that isn't Simtropolis-related and could probably (and now that I think of it) will be cleared.  I've so far hosted around 220 images I believe.  And not only does it save bandwidth, but gives you more file management power yourself for cleaning up your own posts and saving server space!  Also if you want to edit a picture, it's as simple as FTPing the new file, you don't even have to open Simtropolis!  That's what I do for updating the lists on my Operation Buffalo Wing thread.

I also agree with the 800x600 restriction, especially when it comes to width.  Few things peeve me as much as when the text in a post extends past the right edge of my screen!  Greater than 800 pixels high doesn't bother me personally (although I don't do so myself), especially say for a very tall BAT or a highway layout in a CJ.

Just my $0.03...

I usually go through my old postings and editing them so there are just links to the images. Saves on loading them up everytime you visit the page and also on screenspace.

think that ImageShack is a very good idea. Imagine over 35.000 people all uploading their pics to simtropolis. I'm sure the server wouldn't be able to handle that.

Now to see if I understand how it works.
Pic below has been uploaded to imageshack. It ain't a pretty sight I admit. But hee, it's all I got.

How do you group several pictures into one image? I use Paint Shop Pro, and have tried to find a way without any luck. Image editing is just not my thing. But if this helps Simtropolis I would like to learn and it would be great if someone could give me a hint. Thanks.

EDIT: Never mind, just found out.

I agree with the off-site hosting suggestion. I, and several others have started hosting our avatars and sig pictures on our own space so that Simtropolis will load fast on the pages where we have posted. It's a small start, but I think every little bit helps. What I would think would REALLY help is people hosting their own CJ pictures as this topic is saying. My next CJ's images will probably be hosted mostly on my web space, and not Simtropolis.

I just have one question. If I host my pictures on ImageShack or any other off-site hosting service, will the pictures be automatically purged after the certain time limit like the other images here on Simtropolis? I'm going to start hosting off-site and just want to know if that is a way to work around the purging. Thanks.

From Imageshack's FAQ:

Will the images I upload ever be deleted?

Images that have not been accessed in over a year will be deleted. This is by no means the maximum storage time, but rather the minimum. This means that as long as people view your image (wherever it may be), it's clock will reset. So, if someone looks at your image on day 364, that image will not be deleted for another year.

I have always thought to use the web space provided by the isp, or what most know as a homepage. Most Isp's give you plenty of space with an account. Now I guess im old school because I still use FTP, thats right, File Transfer Protocol. And PSP to edit images then a simple upload - done.
These days with php, asp, java and web based portals available it's like handing out hosting on a silver platter.
Jpg and png files don't actually consume tons of bandwidth, but draw & dispaly time come into play. I might think a file size restriction is more of a polite way of keeping the forum flowing. And so even if you host off site or use your own (which is possible)* the file size should be kept out of respect to to the administrator here, as well as other simtropolans. After all if your host is a dog, well, get a new dog
