I researched some suburbs and gave it a go, this was my first attempt.

simcity_suburbs_realism1.jpg

Am I on the right track? What about realism? Any suggestions? I will post more pictures as more suburbs emerge.

Personally, I was pretty impressed with my first go.

    Must be some permissions.

I try by viewing it from direct link http://s16.postimage.org/albltq1r7/simcity_suburbs_realism1.jpg it worked there.

I like that you made different angle streets and i personally do the same by placing stores around the main streets. My suggestion could be that maybe use some street tree mod and get some custome trees to add to the scenary, would make it more grener and nice. But thats what i think

Overall looks good, but you should focus on using only one tileset to give it a more uniform look.

EDIT: Also try using custom trees and Maxis tree replacements.

Looks great, the only thing I'd add would be to maybe space things out a little more, add some tree filled green space in there, a large park could also add a nice break.

I can see it without the link, but anyway it really depends on what type of suburb you are trying to make and its surroundings. Example, if you were trying to make a U.S. inspired city, it has many mistakes, but there are some in the U.S. that look similar to that, but I lived in suburbs next to the 2nd and 6th biggest cities in the U.S. and they surprisingly have grid systems, with some grid breakers here and there, but overall it looks good

This is not a Show your Suburbs thread, JS, he is asking for advice at making better suburbs.

As things have evolved over time, we've usually distinguish between "Show us..." posts as things that have been completed and "Advice on this..." posts as ongoing discussion and assistance. For that reason, we'll move this to General Discussion.

    Thanks

When posting an image, please make sure you have the correct url. I can't see that first post image either.

Your 'burb looks nice, but I don't see how it connects to your transit system. How do they get to work? And were there any strip malls or shopping areas?

Alright, enough formalities, I don't know where to post so I just did my best, thanks, CaptCity for being the mature admin (:

NonnyMoose, I don't exactly know, I don't have much of a mass transit system in this area. Mass transit hasn't developed anywhere except my main CBD city, This city in the picture was mainly just a practice at doing SC4 suburbs. I had never been the one to stray from grids, but I like the way these look.

OK, a suggestion. Use heavy passenger rail and bus lines. Put a railway terminal, not on a through track, but a spur, at one side of the 'burb and arrange bus lines to converge there. Put another terminal close to the CBD, and connect to whatever you have in the CBD. If a subway or GLR, there are multi-connect stations on the STEX and the other exchanges.

Another possibility is Elevated Rail with parking across from it, and buses converging. This can dive underground near the CBD to become your subway system and also emerge as GLR using stations and lots from the STEX.

The possibilities are endless. Don't overlook monorail if you have a wealthy suburb. The $$$ crowd will take monorail.

My entire city seems to be strangely rich.

And I don't know how to do the GLR, but the elevated rail/subway and monorail sounds good!

GLR has its own learning curve. Play in your sandbox for a while. The NAM does not include any lots, so you have to download the stations you like. Be sure you read all the instructions and read mes that come with the stations.

GLR is converted EL. Much of what you know about EL applies. However, if you want, there are some new Tram skins you can use for the rolling stock. All of the light rail (subway, EL, and GLR) is basically the same rolling stock. However, there is no sensible interface to heavy rail (the light tracks can't handle the big diesels).

The heavy rail and the light rail are only the tip of the ice berg. There are other rail systems adapted from them, including a Hight Speed Rail system adapted from the Monorail.

Ahh, the only thing I don't like about a lot of that stuff is that most of it isn't draggable.

Yep... GLR can be a long and arduous process to put down, but if you have the patience, you can do great things with it.

Your suburb looks pretty good. The only thing I don't like is that the roads are more jumbled than the side streets. Usually the roads are straighter and the side streets tend to be more random. NAM comes with some diagonal streets that look and work great if you want to liven up the side streets. When I can't find any inspiration, I look at some suburbs in Google Earth. As far as aesthetics work, you're on the right track!

The current NAM lets you drag EL from a starter piece to create GLR tracks, but it is a bit tricky. Read carefully and experiment in your sandbox.
