Welcome! I'm glad that you decided to come to the wonderful world of BAT. There are tutorials you can find on the omnibus that will help you, though I'm sure you have seen those.

If you have access to a student e-mail, I definitely recommend getting 3ds max here: http://students.autodesk.com/?nd=download_center

You have to make an account I believe, (there's a thread about this that is pinned fyi) but it's such a vastly more powerful tool than gmax. Gmax is the dumbed down version of this software 7 or 8 years ago. When I was learning to actually model I went to http://www.digitaltutors.com/training/3ds_max-tutorials It's a subscription based tutorial site, but there are free tutorials on the different modifiers and all that, and they're really helpful, without that site, I wouldn't be able to model at all as well as I can now.

Good luck, and most of all have fun. We'll help you along the way also.

Welcome to the BAT forum! Good to see you here. :)

I just checked your first building; it's a good start, but I think it was a good choice to open a thread.

As for your next BAT, I honestly fear that it may be a bit too ambitious - yet. IMO, you chose your first BAT well: A simple structure that can be used to learn the basics and doesn't take five years to export. Of course it's entirely up to you, but I'd suggest practising a bit with similar buildings (or indeed tweaking your Exito store) before you move on to more complex stuff.

I'm pretty certain that some shortcomings of your first BAT are not there because the aspect in question was totally beyond your capabilities, but simply because you lacked some practice and some routine. One key skill to BATting doesn't even have to do with clicking the right buttons and selecting the right menu entries in gmax: It's sheer and simple observation. How does the edge where wall and roof meet look exactly? What's on the roof of a supermarket? How does a loading bay look precisely?

To pick just one example, I highly doubt that the entrance to a supermarket will be a wide stair. People must be able to get in and out with shopping carts, so stairs wouldn't work. It's not a courthouse, it's a supermarket.

Details like this add to the feeling that a BAT looks and "feels" right and realistic. I'm pretty sure that the modeling techniques you applied in order to create that first BAT of yours will be sufficient to create a much better version of it if you observe well and take your time to recreate realistic details.

In any case, I'll keep following this thread and providing input. Getting started is the hardest, so don't let initial difficulties discourage you - keep it up and good luck! :)

Hola Andres, I think it is an improvement from the previous version, however your model still requires a bit more of work. The idea of having a BAT thread is to show your progress here, receive feedback and work from there before you upload files...it becomes a bit pointless to comment on something that has already been released and quite annoying to see multiple versions of a BAT and doesn't help the work flow. Imagine if a car company would start selling a car before testing it and expect feedback from users to improve the car it would make sense right?

I don't know if I should point what in my opinion could be improved from that model as has been upload twice already, however if you are interested in my feedback drop me a PM, remember that I speak spanish so it might be easier for you to comunicate this way with me.

Cheers looking forward to see more from you..
