I have been playing around with photo editing using GIMP. I was wondering if people recommend GIMP or Photoshop however? I find GIMP easy to use and effective but I have no idea how photoshop compares and I don't really have enough knowledge to experiemtn much with photoshop.

Both are good, of course Photoshop will be better in the long run because it's a paid for programme, but GIMP is good enough for anybody wanting to edit pictures :D

I recomment PaintNet. I think it is much more flexible than Gimp and easier to use than photoshop, and it is also free. Maybe it has less tools than Gimp, but it can be easily fixed by downloading plugin pack. :ducky:

Photoshop is a very capable, very expensive, commercial software with very strict licensing, and I believe it is only available for Windows and Mac. Gimp however is completely free, but it lacks features that photoshop has. Overall, photoshop is the better software, but I doubt your willing to spend big money on it if GIMP does the job just fine.

I've been using GIMP due to it being free and have had no problems with it. Its been capable of doing everything I've needed to do so far. I've never tried photoshop but considering its a paid program I would recommend GIMP. Especially if all your doing is sim city related.

Simcity CJs is all I am likely to use so I am not really sure I want to spend money on photoshop. I was just interested to know if people thought GIMP would be adequate - sounds like it will be.

Photoshop Elements, IMO, is the best choice for editing pics in sc4. If you don't want to spend $75 or more, then just go to amazon and get an older version for under $15. ;)

Is not necessary to spend money only for photoedition in SC4, GIMP do the same as Photoshop, the trick is to find the tools in GIMP. If not, GIMP do a better job than Photoshop.

I use GIMP and I recomend it totally.

As a BATer, I need a program with layers so that I can efficiently create, modify, and recycle textures. I use Photoshop more because I know the ins and outs of it, and have been using is since '07. GIMP, whenever I have used it, seems equally capable for most tasks. The layout is quite different, but once you figure out where things are and get them to a point where you are comfortable, it is a very good little program.

If you can't get PS, GIMP is fine. If you can get PS, I suggest you use it. As you become more advanced with it, you will learn to appreciate the neat things it can do. That's just me though.

There's nothing wrong with free ;)

Photoshop definitely since it's more capable and easier to use than GIMP. Photoshop has a steep learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, you can do some pretty neat stuff with photoshop that you can't do with GIMP.

I tried GIMP once but it was just confusing =/

I'm not a BATter, but I have the impression that the features you really need in order to create/edit satisfying textures are just a tiny part of the overall capabilities of both PS and GIMP. Hence it all comes down to personal preference - which user interface is more intuitive for you, which tool better suits your preferred way of doing things?

In this context it's worth mentioning that if you don't like the split windows concept of GIMP, there's a modified UI called GIMPShop that adapts the Photoshop look-and-feel.

At the end of the day, I guess it's like debating about whether a Porsche or a Maserati are better suited when all you want to do is drive a few miles on a highway with 50 mph speed limit.

I much prefer Photoshop. I've been using it since 2004, and I can do just about anything with it. It's intuitive, there are millions of tutorials to help you get past that steep learning curve, and you can use to for an insurmountable amount of tasks. I love it, and much prefer it to GIMP. I got Photoshop CS3 free thanks to an amazing Advertising Design teacher a couple years ago.
