Hi, I made myself a task, to create a mountain pass but It was a hard job to me, because of one specific rule. It should not be too steep.

Well, here is the pic:

overpass.jpg

The problem is, I don't think it's realistic at all. I live in more or less flat area, so I have no idea, if my mountain pass would even be "pass-able" by trucks and so on. Also, I was thinking that it could deal with big problems like avalanches and huge maintenance due to weather and structure of building, so I'd like your comments& suggestions.

Would it work?

Am I out of my mind?

Is it too steep?

Would it be even possible to create in real life?

Thanks :D

I went through WV earlier this year and for a main road its more of one long curve going into another long curve and the side roads were pretty much the same as side roads in the mid west smaller version of the high ways. traveling along creeks and rivers.

As for a mountain pass besides a high way or a small road traveling along a creek, I have no idea how they would "really" look.

I think your pass looks very nice, throw in a water fall and some trees and your good to go.

The road looks like it is too close to the slope in places. Try extending the shoulders, especially at the hairpin curves. Like this: I'm not sure that you could have shoulder as shown in the link, but the slope should extend flat from the outside of the curve. Not so important if the road is curving with the outside cutting into the hill.

    yeah thanks for advice.

As you all see I don't have a huge room for manuvering the shoulders and widening the curves, And yeah, I was definately still going to do the finnishiing touches,...

... Right now I'm more concerned if that kind of road would even be practical in real world. Consider the large fall just further below the tunnel. Wouldn't it be a 24/7 threat for avalanches and construction problems???

Also are there any cool props and texture packs that are useful for "decorating" that road?

    Hi everybody!

I always admired that most of the cities shown here are located on plains.

I didn't want to start a new topic, so I show my pictures in the only topic I found related to montanuous relief.

Living in montanuous town (Sochi, Russia) influenced me to this city building concept, almost all of my towns are montanuous (at least half of city's territory) with curved and unusual roads. The most of dormitory areas are situated on steep slopes with each and every house nestled on place specially flatted for it before.

This town is still being built, it's population is 420,000. It still has many slopes waiting for construction.

You can see that I use very very few modes.

3 parallel roads on the cliff. The higher - the denser

I think the problem making your roads look unrealistic is that the mountain itself is unrealistic. Its a bit steep!

I'm too lazy to post all these images, but I made an entire City Journal devoted to a mountain pass that I made. The trick is to use NAM curves and to use the terrain to find the best spot to put a road. This may involove a lot of curves, so get ready for that.

My town has bus routes with up to 20º slopes and roads without public transport net with up to 30º, so the mountain towns are realistic. (Ah, I'm speaking about town I live and not about I build9.gif). I saw steep hills of Rio de Janeiro crouded with houses (and not only favelas, but also high-rise apartments). Hong Kong and San Francisco I suppose have the same areas.

Even so I avoid long steep roads when bringing slopes under construction.

I do hope this isn't considerable 'too' steep. this is the very top of Twin Mountain Pass.

Who in the world would consider a 60 degree angle steep?   :P   The curves and scenery are very nice, but it is awfully steep

Also:  what compelled you to resurrect a 2 year old thread?

I think a slope mod to smoothen out the road itself and also if you are using the NAM I'd consider using the the RHW-2 instead of the road. It would elimate sidewalks where you don't really want them, make it a bit more realistic.

I didn't see any other Mountain Pass threads, so this worked. As for the angles, I will have to fix those using RHW-2 because my current road slope-mod is too restrictive for such passes.

that pass is pretty epic Alex B. there are really only two problems with it i see.

1.) that slope at the top of the page is way too steep, that's almost 80 degrees! real truck would be sliding everywhere on that road.

2.) your road does follow the natural grooves of the mountain, i can see in some spots where you cut right through the mountain when you should have followed a groove right down. however this can be overlooked.

everythiing else is nicely done though.

EDIT: Holly (magi)carp this thread is older than my nephew. someone from SimtropD.O.T come and lock  this

Gosh this reminds me of when I was traveling with family to Las Vegas. We wound up going up/down some steep hills along the way. I'm also reminded of going into the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California by the steep cliffs. I have a fear of heights and always get really nervous when there is a steep drop, guard rail or no. So in that respect, it looks good. It needs a lot of decoration though and like others have said, the sharp turns leave much to be desired.

One thing that occurred to me is this: Where is the water? Maybe it's just me but when I'm traveling through the mountains, I expect to see some body of water, be it a lake, river, or waterfall. I wouldn't like to be a Sim living on that land mass. I would be very thirsty.

Edit: Oops. I just woke up from a small nap and thought this looked interesting. Just like on food and most other date related things, I rarely pay attention to the date. Sorry.
