The City Of London wants RIM to temporarily shut down BlackBerry Messenger as it is an easy way for the rioters to contact each other in private.

I don't really agree with this, what about business men that use the service? I guess there is always regular texting.

RIM has received threats from some hackers should they do that according to tonight's CBC National.

None of this is doing the social networks much good. It is starting to look like shutting them all down would be a useful thing.

There are a couple of states ( Missouri ) that are now not allowing teachers to "friend" thier students.trying to crack down on sexual misconduct.

http://www.newstribune.com/news/2011/aug/06/teachers-protest-social-media-crackdown/

but mabey that needs a differnt topic, the Fall of face book.

I'd suggest 'The Greening of Face Book". The whole thing, including Twitter and the others are being exposed to bad conduct. The creators were certainly Pollyannas if they thought this would not happen. Sexual misconduct and bullying were sure to arise, and now we also have the misuse of fast communication networks to abet criminal activity.

Because of the volume, it is not possible to monitor this except with very fast computers. Then who will watch the watchers?

3 Dead in Birmingham, after they were hit by a car during the riots.

Also it appears Cameron has authorised "whatever tactics they feel are necessary to control rioters around the country and put a stop to the continued violence." Cobra is once again in meetings, Parliament has been recalled for a special session on Thursday.

It seems likely that within 24 hours they'll deploy at least on Water Cannon. Also I have little doubt that if the situation is still as bad tomorrow as it is currently then parliament will authorise sending in the army...

Everyone was on summer holiday. You expect instant reaction? What would happen if the congress was scattered to its constituencies or off-shore holidays and there was a crisis in the U.S.? You don't suppose the executive can declare war or such on its own do you?

thats my point. The LOCAL police,or at the most the local city govt, should have the authority to do what needs to be done in a situation like this, its an out of control riot for god sake, waiting DAYS to approve procedures seems way too long. geting the parliment together from were ever to approve local police procdures seem to be like me calling the presidnt of my company to see if he wants me to do my job today.

I believe that each state governor can call out the National Guard.

I know it happens back during the riots in the '60s. These days it usually happens during hurricanes and such. (One reason the response to Katrina was so bad was some idiot decided to send the Louisiana National Guard overseas during hurricane season.)

The last time the Maryland National Guard was called out was during the back-to-back blizzards. All the governor had to do was declare a state of emergency. Then we could bring out the humvees and military ambulances to help with emergency transportation.

A terrible indictment of the British government. Who is prime minister? Marie Antoinette? Have you gone back to Chamberlainism?

I don't understand why the Mayor of London can't call out whatever he needs without going hat in hand to Whitehall. Some new regulations are clearly needed. This isn't the 1860s any more. Sir Robert Peel is probably spinning in his grave.

The police are damned if they do and damned if they don't. They go in to soft the public will complain, they go in to harsh the human rights / lawyers will kick up a fuss. IMO cut the bureaucracy and let them deal with these people as is fit. There is still a few preaching about how it's not the youths fault and they're just a product of bad environment but I think it's safe to say thats bollocks and they won't get an ounce of sympathy from the public, nor do they deserve any.

You have the problem of too many bleeding hearts and not enough gumption. What ever happened to the good old Lion? Mange?

It is time to quit pampering your lazy "youth" and start insisting that they be productive members of your society even if it is building roads or breaking rocks. I think our limited socialism is heading in the same direction, but you've gone too far over there.

Much snarling and action seems to be coming from No. 10 today.

I think you have an "apprehended insurrection" going on over the urban areas.

Very litte housing available down here, dunno about anywhere else, because all the council housing is sold.

Kind of makes me think why im gonna bother really.

But i do agree. Im just saying people may have lost a little faith.

The people rioting aren't your normal run of the mill youngster anyway. Plenty of people live in exactly the same conditions as these thugs and they do not resort to looting and violence. Thankfully for the first time in god knows how long people realise this is a minority of youth and not a majority. The people rioting are the same people who mug/steal, start fights, vandalise property and just generally make a nuisance anyway, they've just mobilised and done it on a massive scale. These people do not know the meaning between right or wrong because their parents never gave a damn, they're responsible for much of the social issues we had in the UK anyway. But they do not fear the police, to stop this the police will need to use the only language these people understand, violence.

On the subject of the tuition fees while I do not think the 9k increase was a good idea I do think the university sector needed to be overhauled, sadly it has not been overhauled in the right way and the condems are sticking with the ridiculous 50% target.

Hmmm, Some problem at Birmingham. After the 3 dead were identified as young British-Pakistani Men and the suspect was identified to be a black British man, it raised tensions between British Pakistanis and British Blacks.

Just to put some things in Perspective:-

David cameron has authorised the use of Water Cannon. However there are no Water Cannons in England, or Great Britain for that matter. There are 4 in Northern Ireland which means if a Chief Police Officer asks for one it will take 24 hours to get it. At the moment none of the CPO's has asked for one.

Most of these thugs are just plain criminals, who were joined by opertunist theives and they are not all youths. Two magistrates courts (Camberwell and Highbury) have been open all night to deal with the rioters in custody. A cross section of the people dealt with are:-

Teacher, University Graduate, Drug Dealer, and an Unemployed Man.

Most people were remanded in custody, some for appearance at a higher (Crown) court. This means they will get a longer sentance.

Over 1,000 people have been arrested and Police have now been able to put out wanted pictures, including one which an idot posted on is own facebook page. One person caught with a Blue-Ray player claimed to have found it in the street.

These people deserve all of the time in prison they get, the problem will be prison overcrowding. They should send them all to workcamps and when they get released no benefits for them. These people aren't rioting because they are frustated with society they are rioting because they are opportunistic thieves. I suppose you cant afford your Nike tracksuits and hoodies on benefits even if they are lying to get more.

Why would a teacher do that kind of thing, they're supposed to set examples to children not inspire them to loot.

The police are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

That's one of the advantages of having the National Guard and using them in situations like this. The police are not leading the charge so they can go back to business as usual afterwards.

I think the government didnt help.

    £9k a year uni.

That's about $14,500 USD at the moment. It would be difficult to find a university that is cheaper than that.

When they said it was sexist of car insurance companies to have 2 different prices for the genders, both went up past already extortionate prices. They did nothing.

Just curious, what prices are we talking about?

I know I'm missing some background here but what was the government supposed to do about these things?

Very litte housing available down here, dunno about anywhere else, because all the council housing is sold.

Council housing. Are they like US housing projects? I hope not because those are pretty bad.

Though until the late 90's, a University Education was free in the UK. A problem here though is that too many people go to Uni now, which kind of devalues a degree to some extent, and makes it more expensive to fund. Stopping the people who go to Uni just to party and faff around would be a better idea, a good 40% of students fit into that catagory.

When they said it was sexist of car insurance companies to have 2 different prices for the genders, both went up past already extortionate prices. They did nothing.

Just curious, what prices are we talking about?

I know I'm missing some background here but what was the government supposed to do about these things?

At the age of 18, woman were paying around 50% of what men were paying on Car insurance. Naturally, people were not pleased as most young males are just as sensible drivers as the young woman, and there are bad young female drivers just as there are bad young male drivers.

Very litte housing available down here, dunno about anywhere else, because all the council housing is sold.

Council housing. Are they like US housing projects? I hope not because those are pretty bad.

Sort of, but it was always maintained to a high standard until the 80's. Some council houses are bigger than normal houses (which also annoyed a lot of hard working people who bought their houses).

they need a specific water canon truck?

what wrong with a good old fire hose attached to a fire truck?

    improvise people !

I agree with this, also, the TA (sort of like the National Guard in the US) have fire fighting capabilities do they not? They should have been bought in to help the LFB.

Anyway, the riots have now stopped.

100's homeless, that first corner building with the carpet shop had 20 apartments alone!

Thousands without jobs, 750 jobs went up in smoke with just the Sony Warehouse.

    Four dead...

What an absolute disgrace for the UK. People have jokes that one day the chavscum would try and take over for years, and now it has happened.

Might I add at this point, there was supposed to be Rioting in Portsmouth. Thankfully Hampshire Constabulary intercepted the gangs messages and social networking and managed to nab them before they started. We were worried at one point though, a nightclub in the south of the city burned to the ground yesterday! Police have confirmed that the fire was however, unrelated.

I know I'm missing some background here but what was the government supposed to do about these things?

British Insurance companies used to offer lower premiums to females because they were considered to be a lower risk of having an accident.

The European Union declared that sexist therefore illegle, so the companies had to raise the female premiums to male levels.

Very litte housing available down here, dunno about anywhere else, because all the council housing is sold.

Council housing. Are they like US housing projects? I hope not because those are pretty bad.

Council housing is social housing and varies according to the age of the property and the council which built it. Much of it is/was better than the private rented sector and was built after WW1 until about the 1980's. Since then housing associations have taken over from the councils in the provision of social housing. A great deal of the better housing has been sold to the tennents under a scheme called "right to buy", at a considerable discount according to how long you had been a tennent, introduced by Margaret Thatcher.

they need a specific water canon truck?

what wrong with a good old fire hose attached to a fire truck?

    improvise people !

Not as powerful as a proper Water Cannon, not fitted with appropriate levels of security for the occupants, and would make firemen even more of a target than they are already.

    ILL TONKSO

The TA do not have the fire fighting capabilities any longer. All the old Green Goddess's were scraped a few years ago. Also the TA are part-time soldiers I'm sure that they are quite the same as the US National Guards. If they wanted to the could use units of the Regular Army, which the government won't call in.

It always was funded for the people who wanted to go. Then it was £3000 max with loads of subsidies, and now its £9000 with virtually none. Virtually the same tax rates too :\ (Apart from VAT, which went up.) This is the first year for it to go up to £9000.

But it isnt only that, its that the government was naive enough to think that by setting a maximum and not reccomending it, Universities were going to charge less. The ones that have have charged £8500.

WRT University costs and the party crowd. Don't the universities have some kind of maintain a specific academic grade or out? Ours do. You can get cut at Christmas in many schools (end of first half term or semester) if you are not maintaining a passing grade.

The party crowd are easily identified and can be put on notice that its work or out. All the financial barrier does is cut off the brilliant but impecucious minds from furthering their education. This leads to loss of the future for the country and may well result in emigration of those so denied. I doubt there are enough scholarship programs for such persons.

There seems to be a large disenchanted class world wide. Many youth are being left behind by "modern" education policies when they drop out out of boredom. The "No child left behind" policy, for example, is dumbing-down the whole population.

I have never heard of a riot happening in LA. That is why I thought the story seemed weird. LA does have gangs though, so I don't know if London figures they could learn how to deal with the riots by learning how LA deals with gangs.

But we still need your support to stay online. If you're able to, please consider a donation to help us stay up and running. This helps sustain a platform where we can share our community creations for years to come.

    STEX Collections

By way of a "Thank You" gift, we'd like to send you our STEX Collector's DVD. It's some of the best buildings, lots, maps and mods collected for you over the years. Check out the STEX Collections for more info.

Each donation helps keep Simtropolis online, open and free!
