Well, congratulations to our American cousins who now have the most decorated Olympic athlete ever.

I just watched the ladies 8's rowing, where we, the defenders, got the silver and the U.S. struck gold. An exciting race.

CBC has announced that they will be the broadcaster for the 2014 and 2016 games in Canada, outbidding CTV.

I consider myself more of a casual fan, rather than a 24-hours-a-day diehard. Since it's too hot to do much of anything here, though, I've been checking in on the games now and then. They do help me get over basketball and football teams that have fallen apart and a baseball team that threatens to do the same at times. It is kind of interesting to see all of the different countries competing, although I admit that the scandals and such do drag the Olympics down a little for me. Even so, I was relieved to see our athlete pull it off after the worry that came up the other day. :|

As usual, the Olympics are full of controversy this year.

Check out this incredibly disgraceful boxing match:

There will always be some controversies in such a large sporting event as the Olympic games. At least this time it has been relatively drug free so far.

But rather than focus on the few negatives, we should be rejoicing in the many magnificent sporting achievements we're seeing on a daily basis.

I must say that in the build up to the games that I was a little sceptical on the Olympics being held in London, but I have been immensely proud of the wonderful job that this great city has done so far.

I say well done to London, and to all the fantastic athletes that have graced these games.

Call me clueless but why did this guy keep doing this?

    farahq.jpg

He kept moving his hands up and down while they were in that position.

I'm not familiar with this particular gesture of celebration.

Thank you. Glad I'm not the only one who didn't know.

Among some people I know, it's an inside joke that means something else entirely. (I'd explain but I'd be in violation of the language rules. )

I saw his routine. Sometimes you can tell before they start that they know they are right where they need to be both mentally and physically. He had that look on his face.

I haven't seen it too many times these games. Last time was in the women's team all-around. Aly Raisman's floor routine was the last event. Her face had a very calm, confident, "yeah, I got this" look before she started.

FIFA decided not to penalize the Canadian women's team, but one wonders if that ref was biased. Such a small thing, hardly ever used in soccer, and the chain of events kept our ladies out of the gold medal round. For Canada these are the Bronze games.

The ref called the Canadian goal keeper for holding the ball longer than six seconds. It is in the rule book but hardly ever applied. One of the American players near the ref counted out loud (like it was expected). Was there skulduggery? FIFA doesn't think so, but declined to discipline the Canadian players who complained vociferously about the possibility the ref was biased. At the time the score was Canada 3 - 2.

More controversy, and even my family is an avid boxing fan, how does judges score an Olympic boxing match?

Boxing has always been full of controversial decisions and rigged matches by the refs and judges. It's no wonder many people consider it a joke. Olympic boxing is no exception... there have been many stupid decisions since the games began, but luckily some have been overturned.

Canada 1 France 0 in today's bronze medal soccer game. Some consolation, but we'll see what FIFA finally rules on the semi-final. Meanwhile, I am very proud of our ladies.

Yeah that does sound very harsh.

I'm a massive football (soccer :uhm:) fan and have been watching it for years, and I must say I can't remember ever seeing that rule actually applied. The rule is there to stop teams time wasting and running down the clock when they're leading, so obviously you can't argue if you break that rule. But I can understand why they would have been unhappy.

But still, the bronze medal is huge achievement, and one I hope Canada is very proud of.

The bronze win has galvanized the country for soccer. Not just soccer fans, but everybody. Currently there are more people in organized soccer than in any other sport in the country and it is growing by leaps and bounds.
