Possible meltdown on Japan

I've just read on the internet that Premier Naoto Kan has announced an atomic warning status as the Fukushima powerplant could be on the verge of a meltdown...

thousands of people have been evacuated so far and this disaster would be even worse to top the ongoing devastation.

Personally, I do hope that this does not happen due to long-term consequences on the surrounding areas.

Unfortunately, the Pacific Rim is obviously very active now...

All the best for the Japanese people and everyone who has beloved family and friends in the affected areas,

take care,

Japan lucked out. If this quake had struck closer to Tokyo the casualties would have been enormous. Far worse than what they are now. Still the Sendai region still holds upwards of 1 million people along the coastal areas.

I waked up with this notice. All the states of the Pacific Coast of Mexico are in alert, all the ports and beaches are closed. Untill this moment, there was a waving over 0.70 metters over the normal in Ensenada, BCN, and I've watched recently that in La Paz, BCS, the sea go back around 5 metters. In Puerto Vallarta, JAL, Puerto de San Blas, NAY, Manzanillo, COL, and Acapulco, GRO, there are still the alert, they're wainting for moderate waves, they're wainting waves of 2 metters.

Condolences, Support and Good Luck for Japan.

Curiously today is the anyversary of 11-M in Spain.

Another aftershock about an hour ago

[q]A magnitude 6.6 aftershock earthquake ripped through Japan's western Niigata prefecture[/q]

http://en.rian.ru/world/20110311/162962882.html

what worrisome for the long term is that wall of mud and debris in inundating farmland.

it may be years before anything could be grown in that area from the poisons that will be left behind in the soil.

All these after shocks propagate their own waves. It is going to be a long day in the Pacific rim.

Sympathy and condolences to all.

There have also been reported a leak in a nuclear reactor, a thing that can have even worse consequences than the earthquake.

Where I live, the weather forecast warns about slippery roads - that puts things in perspective...

Certainly, will be a long night for the Pacific Ocean coast. But I'm thinking: Is it normal too many aftersocks after the principal earthquake? There are a lot of aftershocks in the map, and too many of they are around 6.0 richter.

Aftershocks are always expected, especialy with a stong quake like this one.

how many and how strong is hard to say. I havent heard anything about how much undergound movement

there was in the original shift, every thing could still be moving ans setting for months.

now my mum told me that there's a bunch of shocks in the tokyo bay area the last few hrs that experts doubt to be aftershocks of the earthquake near sendai, but rather a 2nd (series) of earthquakes evolving, can anybody confirm this news? I have a hard time finding anything.

also, does anybody know which 2nd nuclear powerplant they declared an emergency due to cooling failure?

Fukushima Daini, the sister plant of Fukushima Daiichi (the other plant with cooling problems)

I finally managed to contact some friends at Hokkaido University who basically told me that universities are pretty much the only places in northeastern japan with reliable internet and phone connections. They are trying to find people from Sendai and the Tohoku Area, but it's extremely chaotic right now.

Today was a very long day for me as my son and his family are stationed in Japan. Found out around noon Pacific time that my daughter in law and grand daughter are safe and sound. This really has to hard on her as my kid is away on orders a the moment. At this time I have not heard from friends that are in the JMSDF, I pray that they and their families are safe.

My family is in Fukuoka in the south, but a few cousins live in Sendai and no one has managed to get in touch with them... I'm freaking out 8.gif

I'll be flying out to Tokyo this weekend, I'm gonna meet my brother at the airport and we'll see what we can do. He tells me the country's lost its grip.

Changing the title of this thread was confusing. I wouldn't worry to much about Japanese nukes, they are reported to have the situation in hand. The building that exploded was the outer shell, and was probably designed to do so. The reactor containment was not impacted.

If there are new slips occurring in Tokyo Bay, this could be the really big one that Tokyo is expecting. Hope it isn't, but things can get worse than anyone could imagine if that big fault under the city lets go.

Communications are down, but Sendai people were well-prepared and it seems that most reached the shelters in time ^_^

Please don't lose your hope.

There are two faces with developing a nuclear plant. On one hand, you will be able to power even your own country without too many expenses. But, you would need to shell out and invest to be able to put up one. It is also a very meticulous building process that wrong moves and decisions could cause disaster, death and massive deterioration. It is also like you are walking on thin ice every time there is a calamity. Because it is so delicate, even small tectonic movements would trigger an explosion.

Rolling blackouts scheduled to begin in Japan tomorrow. My wife is freaking out, but her sister is like, "Whoa, lady, RELAX." They are saying with the tsunami, casualties could be measured in the 10,000s. Here's hoping it won't come to that...

There is too much emphasis on the nuclear power plants. Nuclear plants are hardened to take almost anything including a direct nuclear bombing strike. Much concrete and steel make up the containment vessel. It appears that these did not have the normal safety scramming mechanism or that it failed. In many reactors, a set of cadmium damping rods automatically drops into the calandria which damps the reaction. In a CANDU reactor, all the heavy water is sucked out of the reactor and the reaction just halts. Any action pertaining to a damaged reactor can be delayed until things are more sane. I see the vocal anti-nuke people are making hay while the sun shines. May the freeze to death in the dark.

Meanwhile, back to the people who are in want, let us get on with that job. People over react when nukes are involved, but people are in serious privation in Japan, and this is what needs to be addressed and not the NIMBY reaction to reactors.

Bourneid, you should re-edit your title. The nukes are not as important as helping the people.

Japan is in the worst crisis since WWII:

New volcanic eruption in Shinmoedake, Kyushu island, in the south:

Programed electric shutdowns for Tokyo and Tohoku:

This is an authentic chain reaction (earthquake>tsunami>nuclear emergency>volcanic eruption>electric shutdown>crisis declared>...).

Good Luck Japan! You know that you have all our support!

A 250-mile coastline of Japan dropped 2 feet into the ocean.

It also moved 13 feet closer to America.

The Chile Earthquake moved the Earth by 3 inches of it's axis.. The Japan Earthquake moved it by 6.5 inches.

One Tsunami Wave was clocked to be 400% faster than the speed limit on Japan highways.

Future tsunamis and earthquakes are predicted to be 7,000% worse than the Japan Earthquake, and Tsunamis are predicted to be faster than the speed of sound.

A 2-foot tsunami is like an unstoppable bull-dozer 2-feet high demolishing everything in it's path.. Height is only a factor.

Since the axis is wobbling more, the Earth's crust must stabilize in order to keep balance.

The Earth's crust acts like artificial snow flakes in water globe.. When it's unbalanced, it takes time and movement to bring it back to balance.

Prepare for more.

We, stardust, are the oddest observers of self (a.k.a. the universe).

I'm just a group of atoms typing this.

What do I know?
