As far as I'm concerned, music died with the coming of the 90s (with the exception of Ace of Base). Pop today is garbage.

Jack White will surely save us all!

I think Larks is correct when he says you have to dig a bit. There are plenty of decent artists out there in the hip hop genre, they are just underground. Of course with the internet, underground is not what it used to be. A good buddy of mine dj's at a few local spots here and there and mostly plays hip hop and "rap" but he shuns my suggestions on what to play. He'll listen to it himself on his own time but he won't play stuff during his gigs unless it's current and hot because otherwise women wouldn't dance and men wouldn't buy them drinks. It's all part of the racket.

But there are still plenty of quality musicians and artists out there that write their own material, limit sampling or don't use samples at all, and genuinely try to create unique meaningful music. Some of them even make a decent living at it.

Even as someone with no musical talent whatsoever, I lose no sleep from criticizing garbage. Speaking of which, did you all hear the new Fred Durst song? Me neither. Ok I listened to the first minute or so. Aw-ful.

Yeah, the music is one reason why I have removed myself from the bar/club scene. Besides the fact that it is always too freaking LOUD, the playing habits are annoying. Too often you'll hear the dubstep dance mix of a song rather than the actual song. And too often a song will be cut off before it's over. Not to mention that as you point out, what they're playing probably sucks.

My three favorite genres of music are Classic Metal, Alternative rock and Grunge. I enjoy listening to other types of music but I can't stand any rap or modern pop music..

I'm with you on the "Billboard doesn't know good music" part.

However, I stand by my statement that rap had its time and that time is no more. As far as I am concerned, rap was a part of 90s culture and survived as a good part of culture up until 2005-ish. But you just can't make a good rap song anymore no matter how good you write or perform it since the style itself is now passé.

Same sort of thing with boy bands. Hollywood is attempting to reboot the idea but it just doesn't work because this is 2013, not 1999. One Direction will never come close to being the Backstreet Boys. They are lame copycats of a tired format, not pioneers as the boy bands of the late 90s were.

The music world, I think, is desperately starving for something fresh and new... but all Hollywood knows how to do anymore is rehash, so it isn't happening.

Well think of it like this, Everytime had their popular phase, The Beatles were the Backstreet boys of the 60s and so on, they all die out eventually after the kids grow up, same will be with Beiber.

As a somewhat DJ myself, I find people make the mistake of thinking sound = quality, What they usually do is bring the gains up too high and redline (Go higher then the stable bar on the mixer) and it just ends up distorting the sound because the frequency drops off, which inturn is just terrible.

Well the Beatles played instruments and they were also pretty awesome, so I think that's a stretch, but I see how you get there. The thing is that almost everyone liked the Beatles. The Backstreet Boys, not so much.

I can't even pretend to know what you're talking about. All I know is that I stay far away from the fancy dj equipment because I do not want to be responsible for breaking it. I bet it's fun to mess around with though.

Not everyone of all ages liked the Backstreet Boys, but most people in my generation did to some degree at some point, especially the girls. If you were born between maybe 1983 and 1993 and never liked the Backstreet Boys, you the exception, not the rule.

First of the Beatles are simply the exact same as Justin Beiber, all the pre teen girls love him as the pre teens girls loved the Beatles, they didn't need talent if everyone was blinded by their image.

As for DJ equipment, yeah it can cost thousands of dollars and hours and hours of practice but in the end, If you enjoy what your doing, go for it.

Comparing the Beatles to Justin Bieber is like comparing apples to oranges. Sure, they are both liked by the teen girls of their era, but the Beatles music has been enjoyed long after the band split, and people of all ages still love it today. Bieber, on the other hand, is for the most part only liked by teen girls. I highly doubt his popularity and music will last nearly as long as the Beatles' did. Also, the Beatles had talent; Bieber doesn't. :P

Actually comparing the Beatles to Justin Bieber is like comparing a space shuttle to a bicycle. And don't forget that Beatles are still popular, while Justin will be forgotten in the next years... if not months ;)

Yeah, The Beatles actually wrote their own music.

Of course, it isn't necessarily fair to criticize a singer that hasn't. Yeah, Justin Bieber doesn't write any of his own music, but neither did Elvis Presley. The idea of performer and writer being different people is not new. What is different, however, is that today the singers that don't write their own music are more about image than about the music itself (i.e., the music you perform can suck and no one will notice if they think you're sexy)..

I was surprised when I learned that Warren Zevon wrote material for Aretha Franklin. I never bothered to confirm that, but it sounds perfectly plausible.

I imagine if I had to guess what will become of Bieber's career over the next 5 years I'd be on the side of meltdown. However, I've done a pretty good job of tuning him out. I know very little about his work.

Edit:

Duke: I stumbled across this old file the other day and wondered if you had it in your archives. If not, here it is. It's from 12-3-09. I forget what was going on at the time.

Yes yes, welcome!

My phone seems to have developed an odd glitch where on occasion someone will call me and it won't ring. The screen will light up and change to show the caller, but no sound, and no vibration. Weird, huh?

My phone does something like that when I have over 3000 messages. It simply doesn't vibrate, light up, or even show the envelope-symbol... They just come in my inbox without me knowing it. Quite annoying, because I hate deleting texts (and when I choose 'delete all' my phone deletes the newest texts first instead of deleting the oldest first). Oh, those First World problems :P

I did not have that Muck, where did you find it? (and thanks)

You're certainly welcome. I want to say that some site maintenance was going on at the time. Rather than saying something like "We'll be back shortly" it said "It works!" when I went to log on that day. Dirk must have been testing something.

Not much. The Pirates lost yesterday but they may have intended to for all I know. I saw something on Facebook about Breaking Bad being cancelled. Other than that, nada.

Either way I couldn't watch it if I wanted to but I finally bought a television today. I'm really just sick of not being able to watch hockey, and now baseball.
