When you're playing a game, then it's different. You expect the background music to stay consistent with where you are.

Of course, even then, eventually you reach the end of the level...

I always enjoyed repeating video game music that progressed / slightly changed as you went further in the level.

Probably my favorite example. A little long yes but keep it in the background and you'll notice the 'progression'

Continually building music in video games is fun, though traditional levels don't really allow for it. Here's a fun example, though, from a stage editor:

And an example which some people here might be more familiar with:

And the "background noise" when you're in the garage in Streets of Simicity actually gets musical and starts to get rather intense if you stay in there for a while:

I really liked the music for SC3K, I thought they fit the tone of the game really well. I don't listen to the music in SC4, though, I put in all my own music and sing along as I play. That music was too, I don't know, breezy or high-culture-sounding for my plebeian tastes.

What SC4 had was too much music - over three hours if you listen to it all start to finish. SC3K's music is about two hours, which is more reasonable.

So, the SC4 soundtrack fails on account of being excessively bulky. That said, there still are a few nice memorable tracks, such as ElectriCITY and Oasis, but the music in general doesn't play as well outside of the game as SC3K's soundtrack does.

The SC4 soundtrack also just for whatever reason feels like less of a work of art and more of something manufactured. Which produces some odd results - you want to give yourself the heebie jeebies, try listening to Primordial Dream in your basement in the dark at 3 AM.

I think I'll pass on that and stick with "The Song Remains the Same" like I usually do.

While I really liked the music for SC3K, I'd have to give SNES SimCity the nod for my favorite in the series. I loved that, although now I probable still like it for sentimental/nostalgic feelings.

I definitely liked SC3000's music. Very few songs on there I don't like.

Recently I've been listening to music from Pac-Man World 2. It's amazing that I played this game and did not notice all the songs were played by an orchestra. Of course, I think I was too busy cursing at the screen when Pacman would blow up, burn to death, drown, fall down a cliff, freeze, or the classic 'run into a ghost' death.

Pac Man World is weird. You'd think you can't just expand on a classic arcade concept like that, but they did, and surprisingly managed to make it not completely suck. Still, weird, and classic Pac Man is far preferable.

Trivia: Pac Man was known in Japan as "Puck Man" - they changed it for the American release because in English it would be easy to vandalize "Puck" into something else.

Well, at the very least we can try to finish it before the year is out. There's 920 posts left and 35 days left, which means we'd need at least 27 posts/ day to finish by then.

Ok then, maybe before the end of winter then...

    Welcome back Chptrk!

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

The quick-reply box seems to be bugging out for me. It doesn't display anything I type.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

    Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

The "reply to this topic" button is at the top of the page. Which would be annoying except that it's not necessary. There is nothing you can do there that you cannot do in the quick reply box, and if you want to reply to a specific post you just hit "quote". You can even multiquote!

I think I've fixed it... somehow. I'll see if it holds.

I was using the "More Reply Options" button, since I was down here anyway.
