Yes, something completely new to the world of SC4 and Simtroplis: since there is a very popular and extremely

well done other approach to the game in a fabulous, very well-worked out way, namley SimMars, I would like to

add another perspective to the game itself, however with a very distinctive influence:

Go Roman! The Roman City – urbs romana.

This thread is meant to give the community / all city builders a completely new understanding of how to build a

city:

  • This thread focuses on all buildings from the Roman Empire, covering the era 200 years before and 150 after our current measuring of time in the Western world.
  • All building-types will be built: this includes private houses and villas, shops, public baths, administrative buildings, mercantile buildings and temples.
  • There will be a distinctive street / road system, hopefully being altered and modified by our traffic supremes here, to make it functional.
Finally, this thread is also about recruiting:

If you would like to participate to form a completely new and unique BAT Team, speak now

  • Just send me a PM including
  • Your personal thoughts about the project
  • Which kind of building type you would like to do
  • If you are interested in road work, therefore able to mod it
  • And if you think to partly participate in the new project
  • Would you like to texture?
  • Would you like to render?

As I have created this new thread I am the person who coordinates everything here; I am going to be both active and passive, meaning that I make models, especially of urban villas, on the one hand, on the other, I also will give you some advice and help concerning Roman architecture. Plus, I will be the threads’ ‘dad’. It is very vital that no one, including myself, rushes anything: the outcome, however, should be stuff deluxe 9.gif

More to come soon,

thank you and take care,

lucky7

This is, what I am currently aiming for and it should also be an inspiration for everyone ready to join this team:

a fictious Roman townhouse from the late first century AD, containing shops:

How exciting! I can't wait to see what the team comes up with. And I wish I could do Bat myself so I could contribute. You know, if we had more ancient stuff, I would have kept my CJ ancient forever.

There were some magnificent buildings buildings built in those days. True works of art. Something I believe we have lost somewhat in today's architecture.

@ nathanthemayor      Thank you very much.

@ gio10469                   Thanks a lot, Edwin, I cannot wait to see this blossom, either. Nevertheless I am still the only

person BATting this thread, so forming a team alone is a bit hard lol 2.gif

                                              Take care,    René

@ Schulmanator            Brvcivs, gratias te ago. Glad you like it and I am also very excited... 2.gif)))

Yes, it's a pitty that there is so little ancient stuff around here- about time to change that!

                                               Take care and salve,      Renatvs

@ artist                             Thank you and I totally agree with you. Architecture was splendid back then. I have dozens

of books about this period, some of which showing reconstructions and these are a

pleasure to watch. Surprisingly, only some people know that it were the Romans who

invented concrete that also hardened in salt water. It was the only way to construct the

harbors, most of the temples and public buildings and also a lot of villas.

    headerzo.jpg

Well, I did some work on the first urban villa today (which btw is measuring 24x64 m) and have come up with this:

    • on the front side you can see the shops left and right to the entrance,
    • the rectangle a few meters from the front door is to become the atrium, the main hall,
    • the tablinum to the north (office for clients),
    • the pillars surrounding the future garden with the water bassin and statues.

To the very north you can spot out, from left to right:

    • a bedroom (cubiculum),
    • an exedra (similar to a living room),
    • the summer dining room (triclinium)
    • and another representative room for welcoming guests (oecus).
    94213577.jpg

Two close-ups showing the summer dining room with the concrete couches for eating recumbently, the adjacent rooms and the mosaics. Although the mosaics and the wall paintings applied in soon will hardly be visable, it's

important to me that they are there 4.gif

    76228702.jpg

    87905078.jpg

Oh, the seven small columns surrounding the water bassin are going to be topped by small statues of herons...

That's it for today, I do hope you have got a better insight now and it would be great if I wouldn't stay the only one

forming this IMHO promising team and thread. We could literally write history...

    Take care everyone,

While I can't offer any real participation, seeing as I have no idea how to use BAT, I must say this is most likely my most favourite project I've seen here! I'm really looking forward to anything and everything you do here! The stuff so far is looking really good, and I offer some words of good luck for everything to come!!

Good, here we go with a small update on my progress.

The villa from the last update is now partly roofed:

    capture08032011192916.jpg

    Just a textured close-up, I couldn't resist:

    capture08032011192952.jpg

One question: does somebody happen to know how to make the covered junctions between the tiles semi-

    cylindrical (like an imbrex)?

Plus: is there an easier method to create the same effect to the different roof tiles?

    capture11032011195830.jpg

A temple surrounded by a porticus- the textures need to be re-worked, though:

A close-up of the modelled out and textured fillings:

    capture08032011174016.jpg

    A simple house:

    capture14022011134741.jpg

And a second one that could be used as a 1x1 puzzle tile in the future:

    capture17022011210939.jpg

A forum, influenced by Greek architecture:

    And another one:

    capture11022011171248.jpg

Ok, that's it for today. If you have any tips on the villa's roof - or roofs in general - , please let me know.

Moreover, if someone is interested to work with me on these projects: you are more than welcome :)

    Take care everyone,

Great idea. I'm getting Latin and Roman culture lessons on school, so I love your work so far.

You've added great textures. There are many ways of editing a texture, I don't know all of them.

I suggest you to add some sculptures in the tympanum later on.

    Keep it up 19.gif

MrMAvE94 Thank you very much for your tip and link, glad you like my work!

Tonyr Thanks a lot for the compliments, here's more for you...

Back with something exciting: I have started a new urban villa (1x3) and I think I keep improving ;)

Here we go with some pics- and information :)

First, some close ups in the Perspective View:

The garden wall, richly decorated with paintings. The empty spaces on the wall are to be filled, though.

Also, a very first glance at the summer dining room and the bassin:

    85851000.jpg

A different perspective: the- yes, concrete- clines are going to be covered with pillows; as soon as I am able to BAT

    these... ;)

    30887882.jpg

Looking South: can you see the worked out capitals of the columns? btw, between the columns you can spot out round

items, can't you? These are called oscilla , were often made of marble- I should fix them, though:

    68520694.jpg

The second floor: entrances to sleeping rooms and one door open:

    76370342.jpg

    Now the previews:

    28347323.jpg

    91325810.jpg

    20580121.jpg

    65888510.jpg

So, what needs to be done?

    • add more details
    • finish the bassin
    • finish texturing
    • add some nightlightning

Honestly, I am very proud of the things achieved so far. Nevertheless, PLEASE, tell me what could

be improved, tell me your suggestions and tips.

BTW: thanks to SimHoTToDDy for giving me the advice on the bassin.

Well, more to come soon, stay tuned and

    take care,

    lucky7

Great progress Rene! You seem to be learning the BAT quickly. I can't wait to see how this progresses. I feel guilty that I never was able to finish the Jackie Robinson Pool for your NYC journal, but I'm building a new PC so maybe I'll get a crack at it in the near future.

    REPLIES:

Tonyr Thanks a lot, you seem to be my only fan here ;) Yes, just like a section of Hadrian's Villa, this would

even contain fountains, a theater, beautiful gardens and such... on at least an area that 20fies the one

presented here.. lol. Hope you like the new update.

Back with something new ;) this update contains the start of a new citywalls-puzzle-pieces series as all the other ones

available are way too Medieval. Moreover, I've started on an entire 2x4 insula which we start with:

    INSULA:

This one is made up by 4 houses one of which is actually very small, whilst one house consists of 2 atria and a very large garden.

Ok, in the South you can spot out 2 houses the left of which has an entire peristyle.

The second on the lower right only has 2 rows of columns as it is bordered by the large garden

of the house in the upper right:

    25563430.jpg

It is clearly visible that the garden of the house located right makes up a significant part of the

entire insula. In addition, there is a summer dining room in the form of a Greek temple

right at the other end of the piscina/ water bassin:

    44104993.jpg

The ground level of the summer dining room is just a bit below the general one- some coolness

is highly welcome during hot summer days, isn't it?

    58818947.jpg

As you can surely spot out on this one: a lot of the model is still missing: the roofs of the atria,

the roofs of the gardens, frontwalls,...

    35168437.jpg

So, let's switch to the future puzzle pieces:

Nothing spectacular, but, honestly spoken, highly needed:

    57795528.jpg

    47736047.jpg

    24171847.jpg

    54027167.jpg

    With tower:

    Actually, these pieces, especially the tower, are modelled out after the ancient city of POMPEII;

back in real life, the ramp was replaced by a mound (agger in Latin):

    33166579.jpg

    85093792.jpg

    83076231.jpg

    And a preview:

    41166335.jpg

    88007535.jpg

    87595266.jpg

    56821060.jpg

Well, please tell me what you think of these, as it is very hard for me to figure out what you think ;)

You know, an honest feedback from the deluxe-BATters would be very welcome, to tell the truth :O

However, the next update focuses on textured models and diagonal ones... :)

    take care everyone,

    lucky7

    REPLIES:

Harishna Thank you very much, glad you like it.

    Tonyr Thanks a lot, here's more :)

I have re-done the 2 puzzle-pieces as they were way too small in the game and re-scaling them would not have them

fit on a 1x1 tile, so this is what I would like to show you today:

Citywall on a 1x1 tile, the caps of the battlements are

still missing and the fillet needs to be textured:

    42266050.jpg

    31980528.jpg

    95848495.jpg

    63688040.jpg

Version 1 of the tower, the caps of the embattlements are still missing,

the fillet and frieze need to be textured:

    98633727.jpg

    96913576.jpg

    84517293.jpg

    51181879.jpg

Version 2, same stats as above:

    88677676.jpg

    47542000.jpg

    87887157.jpg

    26545959.jpg

Of course, all pieces need to be stretched vertically.

Off to work on 4 different versions of the gates, stay tuned,

comments and especially suggestions are highly appreciated,

    I love the walls

Just one thing...by stretching vertically you mean correcting for the 133%, making em bigger, or adding foundation to make them slope friendly?, I think the last one is really important while making walls...

    keep it up!

slope-friendly: not in the first release, but in V2. Thanks.

Gio10469 Thanks a lot Edwin, glad you enjoy my work. Here's more... :)

OK, the following pieces are finished now. The preview shows them already vertically

    stretched by 133%:

    64750396.jpg

Well, I'll continue working on the gate above and start with the next 2.

Then, it's time for the corners, diagonal and transition pieces.

    Comments/ suggestions are highly appreciated,

do you think that some kind of tower would be a good addition?

have you considered making bigger pieces let's say 3x1 or so to make it easier to fill? I still think that making em slop friendly would be a great addition of course I am not the one that has to do the job...
