Wow nice work!!
Guys, I apologize for not posting or sending you pics of the game, avatars, or even updates of my buildings.  My computer has been a vegetable for two weeks and it took me 20 minutes to get this post created.  My computer is having a lot of problems and I mentioned before that I had to get my computer cleaned off.  I will probably not be around Simtropolis for a week, and with my sister going back to L.A., my family would like to spend some of the week together.  When my computer is cleaned off,  I will be up and running ready to start on Ford Field or else Merchants row.

Wow... I've missed several pages of NBA coverage I see.  Sorry for the lack of posts on my part... summer has officially begun.  I may turn into a very silent partner for the next month or two, but I am definately keeping  track of this project.  I never did get a reply from the architects at the Stott Building, so I guess I'll try again.  I've started and trashed a couple attempts so far, but I'm still learning, so it may take some time.

Progress looks great Baldy!

I'll try to come up with some more trivia for y'all next time.  First I have to look back to remember where I left off!!!! 1.gif

Welcome back JB. We missed you for about 10 pages.9.gif The progress is looking good baldy. I can't wait for this one to get finished. Maybe then we'll finally have some in-game shots of our Detroit buildings.3.gif

Wow, I actually, for the first time FORGOT about this thread. Thanks Chris. If you look on the page before you will see that most of our BATTERS are having computer problems. I don't know the progress of their BATS or the website. I think the project is still alive though. Maybe we'll see some updatesw soon.19.gif

Yeah, I haven't had a whole lot of time to work on my building.  On the upside, I finished my one class over the weekend, so that will free up some time.  Since the last time, I have fixed up the front and started adding in the offset corners.  No major construction.

I am having some major problems trying to apply the bend modifier to the front wall.  For some reason when I try to bend in on the axis I want, it does strange things.  I thought about rotating it to one another axis (that it appears to work on), and trying again.  I have also tried to add the slice modifiers on it pre recommendation, but 1) it puts it on the wrong plane which I haven't really figured out how to rotate and 2) its the only process that really eats up all my computer resources and locks it up for 5 minutes when ever I try to do anything.

Also, I need to add some rectangles for windows long after I extruded and added all the details to the wall.  How do I attach the objects after the fact?  What I have done is to move the verticies to make 1 large opening and some more pieces to fill in the gaps.  Will this cause a problem when texturing?  Also, I did the entrance part of the wall as a separate piece because everything above is the same as the other walls.  Will this also cause texturing problems?

This is my first building in the BAT (3rd try) so I'm sure there were much better ways to do some of the things, but its the only way I know!

Can anyone help?  If someone wants to I can send them the model to try and bow the front.

Can't answer much of your questions Baldy considering I'm going to have to relearn gmax since I've been off so long. On the plus side, I just got my computer fixed! And I'm up and running on the BAT. The website files are still on DVD and I need to transfer that mess to my computer. This includes all the pictures from the Comerica game and avatars people have been requesting. We are still alive, but very busy.

And finally, the Pistons sig has been up for quite awhile now, and now it's time to take it down. Wolverine Football season is on its way and I have to live up to my name!

Amen on that one Wolverine, Hail to the Victors........ I have been practicing on a few GMAX things and am starting to get the hang of it. I am moving up to Grand Rapids in 2 weeks from boring Florida and will take a look at some of the buildings there and try to see if I can contribute a few things from the west side of the state once I get there.

baldy - I'd be willing to give the bend problem a try. There could be so many different things causing your problem, and it would take a lot of time to explain all of them.

E-mail me at ardecilaATkDOTst with the model file, and I'll see what I can do.

To change the slice plane, apply the modifier, then click the plus sign next to the word Slice in the modifier stack. Then click Gizmo right under it. The plane is now selected, feel free to rotate or move it.

I'm not sure what you mean in the rectangles for windows question, but I know that you can apply a Cap Holes modifier, create a box where you want to remove stuff, and create a Boolean Subtract. You can also create a bunch of boxes, attach them together, and take care of all the windows on a building at the same time. The cap holes modifier will create some weird geometry, but after you create the Boolean, you can convert to mesh and delete the unwanted polygons.

ardecila,

The first e-mail attempt failed, but I think the 2nd went through.

I also attached the floor plan of the lower floors so you can have an idea on how the bend is, although once it is there, I can also tweak it.

I was told I had to use the slice modifiers (many of them) in order to get the bend modifier to look right.  First it took 5 minutes to apply the slice modifier, which put it in the wrong plane.  I tried to rotate and move it, but it was so computer intensive that it probably took 1/2 hour to get just one on somewhat moved.  I tried to bend again with the one slice and had the same problem as without the slice, so I decided to ask questions instead of wasting more time.

I did try this once before prior to adding all the windows and frames. Just adding a bend modifier worked fine, so I don't know what is causing this current problem.

I created the walls by the method in Phillipbo's tutorial, which is essentially creating one big rectangle for the wall, and small ones for the window and door holes.  You then attach all the window and door holes to the wall and extrude.  The problem I have is that after looking at the real building again, I realized I need one extra lower floor on the side walls.  I can go to the edit modifier prior to the extrude and change the vertices, but I haven't figured out how to bassically add and rectangle to the wall and have it extrude with the rest of the wall when I reclick on the extrude.  What is the cap hole modifier?   I thought about doing boolean, but I haven't figured out to do it!  I think I will need to do it for certain section in order to get it to texture properly.

Lastly, I don't know how to thank you for trying to help me with this!  If while looking at the model, you have any suggestions, please feel free to give them to me as I am still learning the best way to use GMAX.

Thanks again!

baldy

The reason you were told to use the slice modifier is because you need more geometry for the bend modifier to look right. Because the bend modifier can't add new vertices, an object without many segments will bend properly, but it won't look right. (You probably knew that already.)

For the missing-floor prob - you didn't put an edit mesh modifier after the extrude on the thing, did you? If you didn't, just remove the extrude, attach the new rectangle, and reapply the extrude.

Oh, and the email did go through. 5.gif9.gif

150bent.jpg

I'm not quite done with it, as the Bend modifier create some undesirable effects I'm still fixing (see those little slash-shaped shadows on the lower section of windows?)

Man I've been MIA here for a while...wooo hooo I have a new computer finally. I've been trolling the boards for the past week or so but nearly everytime I try to post something from my old computer it would timeout. But finally I got my new computer today and wow does it run smooth. I still have to re-inastall the props and files I have downloaded not to mention the BAT and LE but finally everything seems to be looking on the up and up.

Baldy, that is looking sweet my friend. Keep up the good work.

All right, so now that my computer is back up and running well I'm curious if anyone know where I can find some good textures either here at ST or elsewhere. Please do not tell me the stex or the official texture thread, rather where else throughout cyperspace they can be found. Any help is greatly appreciated and here's a Thank You in advance...35.gif

Megaman---I think you're the first one who's really looking forward to the release of the RenCen. We as a group are not that overenthusiastic about it either in SC4 or real life but concede that it is a necessity as it is one of the most recognizable buildings in Detroit, if not the most. Still sticks out like a sore thumb....just my 2 pennies...it will be made at some point down the road.

So hey, I should have asked this earlier but how's everyone doing? Hope your summer's are going well. Is there a consensus on another trip to Comerica Park?

As fo me, man I wish it would get hot, I need work. This oddball temperature range we've been having lately isn't boding well for business but it has to pick up at some point...I hope...I just need it to break 90 and my phone will be ringing off the hook again.

So that's about it for now....take it easy everyone...44.gif

I'm glad you got your new computer bud. As for how my summer is going, fine. Not really much to do around here. I'll be taking a trip to Pensacola Fl. sometime in August. Most likely the first two weeks. It's really nice down there. BTW, What is your job, I forgot exactly but it will probably seem obvious when you tell me.18.gif

I'm an HVAC tech in short...Basically I troubleshoot heating, cooling, and ventialtion equipment and  install it as well in residential and commercial applications. I've been a self employed since the beginning of this year so my customer base is rather small right now as I do not advertise. I rely on word of mouth, business cards, and anywhere I can post a free ad such as a grocery store or online, notably at www.hvac-talk.com I'm also familiar with electirical and plumbing as it comes with the territory. Basically I can fix most anything in a house, including appliances. Right now I've been taking all work offered to me, including painting and other mundane tasks. Money is money but should I get busy I move almost exclusively to HVAC as I can make a fair amount of money in a day. For example, I get $1200 or so for replacing a condenser, which is the outside AC unit ehile my cost is only $500 or so. Now that price varies on size but that is the most typical example as most people have 2.5 ton units in their homes. So you can see why I tend to HVAC work when possible.

As for your trip, have fun. Florida is hot in August but I'm sure you'll have a good time. I can't wait for my vacation as I have not taken more than a weekend trip in 5 years. My last vacation was to Spring Break in Panama City in 1999. I plan on heading up to Higgins Lake to camp for a week the 2nd week of September. I would go earlier but my fiance has business trips planned for the last 3 weeks of August as she will be heading to Atlanta, Boston, and then California as part of a rollout program of some sort of time and labor management program that she is spearheading at Dominos. So that's my summer in a blip....

Ardecila, that looks amazing!  I think some people saw the picture and thought I was posting an update, but you deserve the credit!  Thanks!  I don't know what I was doing wrong with the bend, or what you did differently to me, but it looks like it should!  How computer resource intensive was this?  There is another small bowed out part on the roof (1 office floor and 1 mechanical floor) so I will have to repeat the process.

I didn't really notice the problem you were talking about with the bend, but did notice the area above the center columns looks a little funny.

I think I need to remove some of the thickness on the top of the wall because of the balcony on the roof.  I will probably just change the thickness of the extrude and I should be OK and don't think this should be a problem.

I noticed a few things in the lower part of the front wall that I will need to fix (just moving some verticies) but I should be able to do that and then reapply the bend.

I will try your suggestion for updating the wall.  I didn't want to remove the extrude modifier, but it shouldn't be a problem because the windows are all separate.

I should have quite a bit of time to work on this over the weekend, so when I get the model back, I will add a lot more stuff.  Hopefully the roof part won't be too bad and I will start on the lower balcony.  Does anyone know an efficient way to model stairs?

There is something else I noticed that need to be fixed because of the rendering and the lighting on the front wall.  There are little pieces of wall on each side of the main wall that are set back on the sides and back which look fine.  On the front of the building, this should be even with the front.  Plus, I think on the real building these aren't there.  Either way, they have to be fixed to make the front of the building look fluent.  I would fix it but would probably run into issues with the bend 14.gif

Thanks again for all your help and it's great to finally see a render!

By the way Ardecila, welcome to the BSP team!

The list has been updated to show what has been completed and where to find it.

Well, first the good news. I'm going to be working on the pizza joints this weekend some and hope to have them on the stex by this time next week. As for the tire...well the file looks to be shot. The model is total crap. I have no idea what happened but when I went to upload it into my computer it come out as this blob of god knows what. Back to the drawing board. It should be fairly easy to recreate though...I was only halfway home when my computer messed up last month. I can model it to where I had it in less than a day so my challenge really lies with the hubcap. Oh well...fun fun fun....

I really like what you both have done Ardecila and baldy...credit goes to you both. And like baldy said, welcome to the team...

Budweiserdude and Wolverine, glad to see you guys back and hear your computer problems have been resolved.  I think mine has to do with an update I did to the Earthlink software.  It has been removed and although it's finally running better, it still isn't where it was prior to the software update.

BD, it good to hear you will have time to work on some BSP projects too!  This has been mentioned before, but if you think you might be able to release soon, it needs to be brought up again.  Do we want to release these individually, or create a BSP id and release all projects under that?  In the description we can say who did what, and such.  PDA did something simular, so I guess we would be copying them.  Personally, I think we release them like this and not individually.  Thoughts?  Does someone volunteer to be the release guy, or should we all have access?

As for summer stuff, I have a wedding ceremony on Aug 7 that I have to get a lot of stuff done for.  I'm still not sure where we'll be going for the honeymoon, but it will be a well needed vacation!

I'm not too sure on the Tiger's games in August, but I am planning on taking her family down there for a game at the end of July.  Also, I think the Detroit Skyscraper tour would be another great Detroit event (see link in signature).  I still haven't heard back from them yet, but this is a good way to learn about the city and buildings.

Man I tell you computer problem suck. As powerful of a machine as they are, they are so prone to failure that it makes me sick. If I had an appliance or car that worked like that they'd be returned and/or warranteed in a heartbeat. It's sad when you have this $1000 or more peice of equipment and it works as well as a 1970 Plymouth Duster with 200000 miles on it. Oh well, had to rant a bit....

As for the tour, I have to check with the old ball and chain ( just kidding ) I'm not sure what I'm up to that weekend. I let you know as soon as I can...

The Tigers game might be some doubt for you then baldy...well lets see what the consensus is if and when others can and can not go. We can make a decision based upon that, fair enough?

By the way, Congratulations are your upcoming wedding. Hope that all goes well and hope your honeymoon/vacation is all you hope it to be.

As for the ID codes...hmmm...I think we hashed this out once before. It's not absolutely necessary that we ID it as coming from the BSP but in all likelyhood these structures on our list will be created only by those involved by the BSP. I believe if someone were to create one of the buildings on our list, with the exceptions of the name brand stores,  it would be an abberation. Therefore I think it may be cool if we were to ID our buildings as such as they would then be identifiable with this project thread. However should someone like a personal ID'ing system for his/her creations I will not argue. Personally all my BAT creations will be derivative of this project and can be ID'ed as such. In addition access to files, textures, props, etc. created within this thread should be allowed to be accessed by those who have contributed in some way shape or form in this project. I believe that only to be fair as we seem to have agreed this is a group project and just not 1 or 2 people going at it alone with others along for the ride. It seems to me that those who follow and post here regularly should have that luxury availiable to them. Heck I think in time it will allow for things to move faster and smoother. It's just these first speedbumps in the road were trying to move past...

I've already begun doing more work at the Barry Sanders Project. Alot of it unseen. But expect stuff soon!

So much has happened here in the past few days:

NICE WORK ON THE MADDEN!!!! THAT ROCKS!

WOW, look at the change in avatars and signatures. I really need to get working on mine.

Glad to hear you have a new computer budweiserdude, and I definitely agree on having the second Tigers game.

A problem at the Barry Sanders Project. I don't know if any of you know this, but I am also a member at urbanplanet.org. I have a lot of photos I took awhile ago when I first got my digital camera of the surrounding cities in my area as well as Ann Arbor. Because the BSP has a lot of space and my university server space was getting messy, I dumped all the photos there, where they were visible at urbanplanet. Remember that the BSP is charged for traffic usage like ST. We have a lot of bandwidth, but it can get blown real quick if something bad happens. And that bad thing did happen. My pictures were reposted by other people at other forums. I didn't want to make a big deal out of it, because they did at least give me credit for them, which was fine. But I didn't realize the bandwidth meter was ticking, and the bill was racking up. So this month, I received a larger bill that I really did not want to pay. As a result, the BSP may be pulled entirely while I do work on the site. I know this should not be much of a problem considering nothing has been updated in awhile, but I just wanted to let you guys know if you go to the main page and see nothing!

It looks like the project is finally back on track thanks to sargeantcm. After he revived the thread there has been a lot of activity.

Although I might have to leave with all these U of M fans. I should be getting some recognition just for showing my Spartan pride. As you guys probably know MSU isn't expected to compete this upcoming year. Maybe John L. will get some tips from a tribal chief in Africa.18.gif

After a few games I'll through up the basketball one and there won't be any more insulting after that.

Anyway, it looks like I'm finally downloading the BAT soon. If I have skills (I doubt it) I could start some of the projects. I'm loking forward to some releases.2.gif

I would be up for a Tigers game in August some time, I will be up in GR in a week and a half, I will be attending GRCC for atleast 2 semesters before transfering to UofM for my engineering degree. Ert, what are you going to P'cola for? I went to high school there and lived there for 3 more years after HS and played some semipro football. Go check out the forts and the Museum of Naval Aviation ( I helped lay the deck in the aircraft carrier exhibit and painted the blue angel f-4 phantoms that are there). Its a great city for history if you are into it. Ardecila and Baldy, you are combining to create a beautiful structure there, I look forward to someday being able to perform to those standards.

Okay - fixed the shading errors.

I'd try to study the building and determine what this recessed walls to either side of main wall thing is, but I'm really tired right now. 23.gif I'll tackle it in the morning. Once I fix that, I'll send it back to ya.

Yes, the Blue Angels are amazing and that would be sweet to be the one to paint those!3.gif Last time I was there, there was some kind of Blue Angels anniversary there.
