For reasons that I won't go into (so don't ask!) I have resigned from BSC.

This is my new BAT thread and here are my current projects:

Electricity substations (as seen in the old thread):

substations01.jpg

Barratt semi (as seen in the old thread):

... and my current major project, the Midland Hotel:

Very nice hotel!  It reminds me of an art deco miami-style building.  If that is your idea, I would add a pink or orange to compliment the blue.  There is also a Michael Graves quality to it (check out his disney/florida designs, especially the Dolphin Hotel?).

I also like the substations.  Cool idea, but maybe there should be a large and small version for variety.

Great work!

Wow, I love the Midland Hotel...and the substations. Some small substations have been something missing for ages. Some open ones would be good as well, ie just transformers and switchgear with no building (all painted in customary battleship grey).

gshmails: The Midland Hotel is a real Art Deco hotel in Morcambe, England. It's been derelict for years but I think it's being restored to it's original condition now. I love this style of building.

these certainly look interesting, that substation would look good next to railways. especially if i start work again on the electric lines mod 14.gif
and the midland hotel, that would fit in perfectly with my seaside town 44.gif

There'll be quite a selection of substations when I've finished, so I'm sure something will suitable for railside location. 1.gif

@gshmails - as far as the substations go ... I'll make a set of small ones first and if they're successful I'll make a set of larger ones with a higher power output.  The small ones will act as alternatives to using the windmill power station.

Well, the Midland is just a great piece of art deco architecture ... I'll try to do it justice ...

@garyreggae - as far as I know developers are now in the process of restoring the hotel, but the last time I saw it, a year or two ago, it had been allowed to decline into a very shabby state 26.gif

Thats the spirit RP, I think of late ST has taken a dip, and we ALL need to rise to get back to the top. What I mean and this just my personal opinion is that there seems to be less people commenting/posting and creating/updating threads. Those that are, are doing a great job. However there seems to be background issues which I'm sure I'm not aware of, causing the rate of releases of new BATs or at least new postings and chating in threads declining. I hope these issues can be resolved so we can get back to being a community.

I think there's a couple of issues at play.  One is that SC4 is simply an old game.  The people now playing are either hardcore fans or people who have come late to the game - overall numbers of active people on the site are declining so there's less people to comment - there's also a lot of people who just use the STEX and only occassionaly post a comment either there or in the forums.

As far as BATters updating ST progress threads is concerned, one part of the problem is that most are now involved in one group or another and a lot of activity takes place offsite.  (Anyone joining BSC finds that the BSC Boardroom is a huge and busy site and will inevitably focus their attention there).  The other is that you often don't get any feedback when you do post, so you stop posting updates.

The fact that ST has a core community that has been here for a long while also means that there are cliques and rivalries that can make things uncomfortable for lurkers to start posting and which keep some topics out of bounds.

That is in fact very true rp2005.  Sometimes the behaviour of certain members on this forum is less than commendable. Okay, it's appalling. Mant times someone new has posted, and established members proceed to be curt, rude and otherwise create a cold atmosphere. Would you want to post if there's someone to call you an idiot, demean your actions....heck, there are some that demand total obedience from other members. And I'm not talking about moderators either. I mean, some ordinary members seem to take any chance to make negative comments.  I'm surprised this place has remained as efficient and reliable as it has with the bickering and what not.

And the game itself is another factor. It was released in Jan 03', well over two years ago. Everybody has had their attentions on other matters, looking forward to the fifth edition whenever that may be.  *Although personally I doubt people are willing to wait much longer, we can only hope that EA-Maxis doesn't shoot themselves in the foot, so to speak.*

The fact that STEX and the Forums are slowing down is normal for a game of this age.Since NDEX has gone to the 4 corners all there is BSC and PEG.

As former member of the BSC Boardroom I can tell ya BSC has some awesome Lots in the works but previous comments about BSC here at ST has left a sour taste in the mouth of BSC.

I hope the Lurkers will come out and say hi.

Well said brancra.  Better to lurk, read and download what you want without being insulted in the process.  The answers to most questions can be found in the forums somewhere if you take the time to look.

I've a horrible feeling that when/if SC5 arrives fans of the current game are going to be disappointed - I'm expecting to see great GTA-style graphics, but at the expense of gameplay.

I'd be very happy if EA/Maxis proved me wrong on that.

The other side of that equation is that if SimCity does get dumbed down at the next release there will be a gap in the market for a more technical game that stays true to the spirit of SC3000 and SC4.

The Midland Hotel looks superb. I can't wait to see it textured as I know white is very hard to do. Keep up the good work. 29.gif

Having finished the Barratt semi I decided to take a look through my unfinished projects, amongst them was a small block of 60s flats that was virtually done.  With a little tweaking, a bit of lot-building and some in-game testing it has now been 'given a release certificate' and can be found on the STEX.

Thanks.  Like the industrial sheds, it's just a typically bland everyday building - the sort that no-one's going to get excited about, but which helps the realism of the city as a whole.  I'm doing the Barratt stuff for much the same reason.

Urban Splash is restoring Morecambes Midland Hotel, These exellent developers have already restored derelict mills in Manchester and the Matchworks in Liverpool (they started out in Liverpool I think)

Urban Splash are planning to create a viewing platform and retain it's origanal features so it could be a good development!!!

While I'm in picture posting mood, this is a non-British BAT I'm currently working on and which will probably be my next release.

This is the Imai Daycare Centre, designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban ...

I've now uploaded the daycare centre to the STEX.  In game it will act as an elementary school with reduced stats and will educate a slightly lower age range.

I hope people won't be too shocked at me releasing something that isn't British  2.gif9.gif

Now, RP, I'm a bit concerned here, those little kids could potentially run out into the street there as there isn't a fence to keep them in.28.gif

Maybe it's run on Darwinist principles - kids that run into the road obviously aren't fit for the modern world 2.gif

More seriously - you're right about the fences from a realism point of view, but the way most lots are set up encourages an open-plan approach especially to the side facing the road.

Survival of the fittest and smartest is the way people run daycares nowadays?

Well I'm glad my parents actaully had time for me when I was little...

Well if you're following the Great British BAT Thread you'll know I'm working on some w2w shops and some terraced houses.

I'm also planning a few more Japanese buildings - they're a thank you to the Japanese BATting community for all the stuff I've downloaded from them.

I know what the next one will be - a small, distinctively styled, office block; again by Shigeru Ban - but I won't be starting it until I've got the first of the UK shops released.

PS For anyone wanting the Midland Hotel - it's not been forgotten I just needed a break from it.  It has too much potential for me to abandon it completely.
