Deep frying makes almost everything taste better.

Wow, is it Friday? Where did my week go? It was just Sunday, I thought. I suppose the two long travel days I had this week really shortened it, and I have two more next week. I really wish I could just hang out at my desk and get caught up with my stuff, or that I could win the lottery and quit and work on my writing. Oh well. This busy nonsense should end eventually and hopefully things will be normal again soon.

For tonight we're going to be putting together hiyashi chuuka, that is a cold ramen noodle dish with a soy sauce-based sauce with crab meat (the real stuff, not that paste crap they sell in shrink-wrapped plastic), ikura (salmon roe), shrimp, strips of ham, strips of cucumber, and tomato wedges. Green onion and ginger will be available to add for taste, a yummy treat on a warm summer day with apologies to our Southern Hemisphere winter-bound friends.

Sounds lovely and for those of us who would like something warmer I've been cooking up a big pot of steak and kidney stew with lots of mixed vegetables including kumera (sweet potato) and freshly baked bread to go with it

Freshly baked bread is one of my weaknesses!

Same here, All our supermarkets have bakeries on site, you can still buy the commercially made bread there, but I'm happy to pay a bit extra for just out the oven bread

Congratulations! You've made it another week, with another big one up on deck. And that means it's CURRY SUNDAY! For tonight's curry we're going to serve up some curry udon: fat, tender Japanese noodles in a curry-based broth with thin-sliced pork, onions, and green onions to give it some tasty color. Let's eat!

Summer is in full swing here! But that means I get to sit and sweat all day long because up here where I live no one had central air conditioning and since my rent include utilities I'm not entitled to installing a window unit to sleep comfortably. Oh well. Let's make some burritos tonight.

Did you know it's wrong to spell it burritoes? At least, my Brave browser is giving me the red squiggly line under it when I type it.

For our burritos, let's put on a bunch of vegetables. Avocado, green peppers, red peppers, yellow peppers, orange peppers, onions, cilantro (not exactly a vegetable but whatever), tomatoes, black beans, re-fried beans, cilantro-lime rice, . For meat? Your choice, all seasoned to perfect, Mexican-y goodness: shredded pork, shredded chicken, grilled chicken, grilled steak, cubed tofu (much better than you'd ever imagine, and my protein of choice when I load up a burrito), ground beef. And if you need any extra toppings, we have those, too: sharp cheddar cheese,  jack cheese, jalapeno slices, salsa or picante sauce (picante sauce is American!), guacamole (in case you can't get enough avocado), sour cream. And you can have it in either a soft flour tortilla or a slightly-less-soft-but-still-quite-supple corn tortilla, or just put it on the rice in a big ol' bowl and eat it with a spoon. BURRITO!

That all sounds delicious, winter is in full swing here and the weather service has a tie down your trampolines warning out along with snow and heavy rain warnings .... we are getting both as you can see it snowing on the hills around us, but down in the valley it's raining with bits of ice included.

Am wishing we were still in lockdown so I could have stayed home .... the building heating system is struggling a bit and we have been banned from bringing in heaters cos its antiqued  temperature gauges get confused and start sending out cold air to compensate.

Aretha Franklin has perhaps the most amazing voice I have ever heard! Great rendition of Respect in Blues Brothers, too.

We went camping for the 4th (happy Independence Day, by the way) and of course roasted some weenies and marshmallows over the fire in 90F+ heat. This time we camped above a river gorge, and the little river winding its way through the gorge was this cute, 15-meter-wide stream that was about 30CM deep all the way across (with deeper spots and rapids and whatnot). The kids splashed around and I continued my much-more-professional rewrite of The Sensational Six with my feet in the water, oh it was very nice, a perfect score 5/7, will return.

For our camping theme for tonight's CURRY SUNDAY we'll go with CURRY KEBABS! Skewers of curried meats (chicken, mutton, steak, pork, any cut you like), potatoes, bell peppers, and onions grilled alongside corn on the cob with a side of rice available for those who want to pull the food off the skewers and mix it in with some grains. Boy, that sounds good, my mouth is watering. I'm looking forward to dinner now! Who else wants a Corona to wash it all down?

It has stayed unusually hot this summer. We're in our third miserable week of temperatures in the miserable 80s and fall can't come soon enough. But there is good news, there is a new NAM update! We're up to version 37 and the process of updating to the new one is more intense than I remember any previous update being. Now that I have it installed I may have to spend a few long minutes playing ye olde SC4 this weekend.

We're going to set out some potato chips and french onion dip for those who would like to snack a little bit while we wait for our steaks to grill. I'm taking mine medium and eschewing any toppings to taste the high quality of our beef. Available sides are your choice of potatoes, rice, steamed vegetable medley (broccoli, zucchini, carrots, snow peas, and eggplant) and garlic toast. Have an Oberon to wash it down, or at least an iced green tea.

I am very glad to be able to keep the place up and running! There's just no way I could let it fall into disrepair, so I won't be leaving it any time soon.

For today's special we're going to be cooking up some spaghetti and garlic bread. It was a staple dinner at my house when we were kids way back when, and I think I can make something similarly tasty to serve up here. I hope that wherever you are you've had a great week and are looking forward to a pleasant weekend!

WORRY SUNDAY

Sad, the passing this week of one of the great film composers of all time, Ennio Morricone. Since I posted a sampling of his work, a few weeks ago, I thought I might give you a taste of one of his contemporaries in Italian films, Riz Ortolani. "Nothing beats the Riz"- Gary Oldman, Hannibal

Another Sunday is upon us, and thus another curry! For tonight's curry we're going back to basics with my favorite, S&B Golden Curry of medium spiciness. We'll cook it up with onions, potatoes, and pork and dump it over basmati rice. I think it's been a little while since we've had that, and it is my favorite so we're having it again!

I am so looking forward to this curry Sunday. 2 and a half months straight of re-modeling houses is enough to get me through the virus-riddled holidays this year. It all ends Saturday. Lots of blood, sweat and larfs(no tears until the homeowner gets the final bill). Then I can get back into pickling, brining and a few other culinary hobbies. Bon appetit!

Pickling and brining! I just had an idea to have a pickle feast tonight, but I think it's best to wait until you get yours ready, then you can share them with all of us.

Business at my company is incredibly busy. Mostly it's because the owner is incapable of managing his (and therefore everyone else's) time properly, so a lot gets wasted and we've fallen far behind where we should be. I suppose by Halloween we should be about caught up. OH well. I show up and I do what I can. Fabrication and install are out of my hands.

I always think I'm going to show up more often every week to bless you all with culinary delights, but then suddenly it's Thursday or Friday and I have no idea where the days have gone. Maybe I'm bad at managing my time properly, too. Oh well. Anyone want some apple pie? We're baking up apple pies, blueberry pies, chocolate pies, and (my favorite) chocolate pie with peanut butter crust. Yum!

Here we are, sitting together watching John Wayne's True Grit for another CURRY SUNDAY!  I was on the road all weekend, headed down to my parents' house to stay while I looked at a car in Cleveland. Well, I ended up buying that car and it's probably the nicest car I've ever owned, almost as nice as Mrs. NMUSpidey's. I'm pretty pleased with it, the ride down in my old Mazda3 was raucous and shaky, that thing needed to be replaced in the worst way. I'm just glad it made the entire 10 hour journey. The CX-5 that replaces it is far more comfortable and much easier to get in and out of, too, although it feels quite a bit slower since I'm guessing it's a good 700 pounds heavier.

For tonight's curry we're doing instant curry. You can have your pick, just grab a bag, boil it, open it and dump it on some rice. We have any kind you could ever want. I'm going with some keema curry, mild spiciness, and some iced green tea to wash it down. Delicious and quick!

Lovely, I haven't had one of those in a while, I think I'll just pick one at random .... great news re new car, I went boring mainstream a few years back with my transport as I used to drive a miniature ute, only one seat, manual, no heating but as you sat on top of the engine it wasn't too bad in winter

5f15665fc8aa4_MyCar.jpg.7d24c425e9cb58e89d00abd426d43aa7.jpg

Wasn't fast and if you went too fast around corners you would end up doing it on two wheels as it was very narrow and tended to tip ... you only do that a couple of times before you get very cautious, I miss it but my mother was coming to live with me and I needed weird things like passenger seats, etc

A Daihatsu Midget! Those things have a huge cult following in Japan, and in the world-famous racing game series Gran Turismo they have Midget Cups where you have to enter a Midget to race against other Midgets! There are still plenty of those little things in their homeland, but kei-trucks are far more popular these days.

So far as my new-to-me car goes, well, it really takes its time going. After looking at some numbers it's true that my new-to-me-car is significantly slower than my old one, which itself was a bit of a dog next to my wife's 4Runner.

Why don't we have some chili dogs tonight? They're a Toledo-Detroit classic, topped with chili, mustard, and onions. I'm going to whip up some french fries (cut thick) and deep-fried mushrooms with cocktail sauce and ranch dressing for dipping. If there's any other diner-style food that sounds good for you we can prepare that, too!

The chili dogs sound great.

They got banned in New Zealand .... something to do with the fact that you weren't likely to survive a crash in one, but if you had a current license at the time of the ban and kept the license up-to-date at all times you were allowed to keep driving it, when I sold my one there were only about six of them still licensed to be on the road so it went to a company that wanted to use it to advertise their business I got quite a decent price for it, I used to see it occasionally parked on the side of the road covered in advertising signs.

Now its a daihatsu mira hatchback .... oh well not as much fun to drive, but have to admit in winter its a lot more comfortable and probably safer as well

Thanks to the municipal worker who cut a cable line with a trencher, and knocked half my neighborhood's internet out for a week. One of the drawbacks of living in a rustic area is that most of the city services are rustic. After a 2 week hiatus, I return with...

We've made it everyone! Another warm weekend up here, temperatures way up into the 90s yesterday, but tomorrow it's looking like a more seasonal day and maybe I'll actually be able to get some sleep. For these hot nights let's have some hot curry and we'll sweat it out. Red Thai curry, poured over rice. We'll slice up some mushrooms, bell peppers, bamboo, and potato. Why don't we add some coconut fried shrimp with our special peanut sauce that I absolutely stole from Rose Thai in Toledo. It's so delicious, if you're ever in Toledo, head out towards Sylvania on Monroe Street and give Rose Thai a try.

All the seasons move faster and faster every year. We'll be transitioning to fall in the same time period. At least our unbearable heat has died down a bit this week. Temperatures in the 70s (what, like, 20C I think?) where they belong. I am looking forward to the cold and the snow, though. I should figure out a way to spend June-August south of the equator...

We had nagashi-somen tonight for dinner. Cold Japanese thin noodles served with a Japanese soy sauce and bonita-flake based sauce in which to dip them. We've prepared some okonomiyaki to eat alongside the noodles with cabbage and bacon and if you want anything more let us know because we can put just about whatever you want in it. Just let us know!

Our winters can surprise people, we had some Germany contractors visiting our work a few years back and it was the middle of winter here so they arrived with what they considered were appropriate winter clothing based on their experience of Germany winters and had to immediately go out and buy new winter clothing as their stuff couldn't cope with 100km/h winds, icy rain that soaks thru everything and minus temperatures (wind chill can get really bad here).

Had that last week. My next shrimp recipe will be either salt and pepper shrimp or shrimp pesto. I'm inclined toward the former.

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of pesto, I'd go salt and pepper, too.

But tonight, let's have burgers. What kind of burger do you want? A hamburger? Cheeseburger? Tofuburger? We have them all. I'm having a cheeseburger, piled high with romaine lettuce, tomato slices, purple onion slices, sharp cheddar cheese, and barbecue sauce. I'm also getting it cooked medium. No salmonella here! How would you like yours?
