    Done.  Get well, lad.

We've had a couple of tragedies up here among us with a new strain of pneumonia.  One of our number has passed away, and another is on life support, and improving as of yesterday.  Whatever this is, I am glad I got my pneumonia shot last year.

I am being scheduled for a pre-op exam to see if I can withstand the surgery for my cancer.  There is a good chance that I would not survive, so may be only eligible for chemotherapy/radiation treatments to hold things off until something else kills me.  I have had a flare of of a heart condition that might just do it.

    Getting old sucks.

On a brighter note, I am going shopping next week for a new computer.  This six-year old monster won't run Ubuntu past 14.04 LTS because it has no graphics driver available for my chip set.  Such is life in the slow lane.  A new GPU plus some other improvements costs nearly as much as a new box of tricks, so next Wednesday I am going shopping at my local OEM supplier.  I am not much amused, but not surprised in getting socked by Moore's conjecture.

Mother's Day: May 9, 2016 in Canada and the U.S.

I wear a white carnation today.  My mother passed away more than 20 years ago.  However, for people celebrating this occasion a suggested menu.

    Dinner

Fresh Watercress salad with julienne of poached Chicken Breast - Ranch dressing.

    Rack of Lamb, mint sauce
Glazed Carrots originally brazed with soda water, then glazed with honey and cloves
Broccoli Steamed then with bacon bits added.  Hollandaise sauce optional.
Mashed Potatoes with a little horseradish mixed in and lots of fresh butter

Baked Alaska with a yellow sponge cake base.

    Champagne served throughout.

Well, Alejandro, I ordered a level 3 I5 refurbished system with 8GB memory and a 128GB SSD with an optical drive and a 2 GB ATI  GPU to replace my current box.  There is some delay because it wasn't in stock, and they wanted to do Q.A. on it.  I'm expecting a call any time now to set up delivery.  The nice thing about the machine is it is past its infant-mortality time and likely to run with no problems in the future.  It will certainly do anything I need.

My pre-op assessment is this Wednesday, very early in the morning.  I guess these guys have surgery scheduled all day and want to do this ahead of that.  If I pass this, it means a week in hospital after a six-hour operation.  Cross fingers.  There will be a week or so before the surgery while medications are adjusted.  They will want me off my blood thinner, for example.

In order to not hijack the American Politics (election?  I can't remember anymore) thread, I'll post my reply to you.

I'll be a teacher again.  I have a great resume and a lot of contacts.  I'd want to have a more permanent arrangement than a yearly contract, but we'll see what shapes up.  The new school year doesn't start until April and I have a lease here I don't want to break so I have some time to wonder about where we'll end up.

Well, good luck to you on returning to Japan.  It is certainly a more polite society than the U.S. right now.

Help yourself to the tapas on the bar.  We've found that the Spanish theme does well these days.  If you would like something more in line with Japan, we can easily find you some very fresh sashimi and any fixings you might want.

Ah, my in-laws have sent a box for my daughter's birthday and helpfully included some manju (sweet bean paste, uh, sweets) that I do so love so much, so I think a bit of Spanish fare would do me some good at this point.  It's been a while since I've indulged in such food.

As a treat for dinner tonight I've programmed the autochef for Paella and a nice dry Xerez.

    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Couple of event announcements that may affect this column:

    1.  I got my new machine today, and it is talking just like the old one except it has an SSD as main storage.  Runs like a scalded cat.  SC4 comes up in seconds and a city load is much faster with the plugins on the SSD.  For those interested in the really gory details here is an lshw (list hardware) output giving the full configuration.  The technician who set this up just had to get some proprietary stuff into my host name.  I am not going to bother changing it unless is gets too annoying.

    2.  On May 30 next, I will be having surgery to revise my rectum to remove a rather nasty cancer.  If all  goes well I should be back by the second week of June.  All good wishes gratefully received.

Got the pc working. Learning how to play the game again. Playing it as is. Hate those traffic accidents. Dont remember those being in the game before. Lol.

Took me a little while to get the train tracks ran and get the freight station working.

Mary, what build of the game are you playing?  It should be either patched up to 1,1,640 (published Maxis fixes) or 1,1,641 (fixes plus disk free).

To find out, use Windows Explorer to locate the file SimCity 4.exe, right click and look at the version.

Mary, that is the unpatched game right out of the box.  It is loaded with bugs that have been fixed by Maxis.  You need to follow the links on SC4Devotion starting with the EA Support button to pick up EP1 (to 638) at least, then the BAT fixes (to 640).  Be sure to pick up the default plugins BldgProps_Vol1, ..._Vol2 from the Lot Editor page.

Unfortunately SC4Devotion appears to be down for maintenance, so you may have to hold on for a few days.

An alternative is to repurchase the game from GOG,  GamersGate or Amazon.  This will get the digital version 1,1,641 which is fully patched and diskless.  This one even runs on Windows 10.

Do you still regularly play Sim City 4 Moose?

About once or twice a week.  Picked up a new map yesterday.  Lately I've been playing more Banished.

Served.  I hope you like your French toast made with brioche.  The strawberry compote complements the fresh strawberries, and we have given you some nice whipped cream on the side.  Coffee is Kona as usual.

    Bon appetit.
