A Richmond, B.C., man alleged to have a habit of masturbating in front of unsuspecting women and girls in public places is being sought by the local RCMP.

A B.C.-wide warrant has been issued for Reynold Nirlesh Verma, 34, who is wanted for five counts of committing an indecent act in public, Cpl. Jennifer Pound said in a statement issued Thursday.

In all of the incidents, which occurred between Aug. 24 and Oct. 5 in the suburb south of Vancouver, Verma is alleged to have approached women and girls as young as 12 with his pants down or his hands down his pants while they were sitting on park benches, lying on the grass, seated in a restaurant, walking in the mall or studying in a library.

In one case, a mother with three young children was approached two weeks in a row at a playground.

"It is appalling to me that a 12-year-old child should have to become a victim to such a senseless, selfish act," Pound said.

"The public needs to be aware that this type of behaviour is being committed in their community so they know to be vigilant and call the police immediately. Far too often, witnesses and victims of this behaviour dismiss it and don't call the police."

To be fair, that's not just a social stigma issue but also a public health issue - for the same reason you're supposed to clean up after you're dog. Having streets covered in excrement isn't sanitary. It breeds disease. We owe the end of epidemics of cholera, dysentery, and many other things largely or at least in part to the advent of indoor plumbing - so there is a good practical reason to expect people to use it, stigma or no stigma.

Of course, that's for in developed areas. Out in the woods, contribute to the nitrogen cycle as you please.

That justification is flawed in the following ways:

1) The idotic concept that the government has the right to put into their oppressive grip a whole class of people they deem to be inferior (in this case, people born <18 years ago).

2) Masturbation is a one-person sexual activity, and thus does not require the consent of anyone other than the man doing this. If he was having sexual intercourse with them without their consent, I'd call that rape, and I'd be just as outraged as many are here.

3) What we are dealing with here is not a non-consenting sexual activity. Instead of being forced into a sexual act, they are being shocked by having to watch a sexual act. There is a simpler solution than the iron fist of oppressive government -- walk away. No one has tied them in a cell and forced them to watch this.

Masturbation can easily be a sexual activity for several persons. If the actions conducted in this case were purely "one-person", why did it have to be conducted in plain view of other people? They might very well have been used by the perpetrator to attain his goal.
