This thread will be for the debate amongst our sound designers, since there are now enough for debates to happen <ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/9.gif>

I am for a new soundtrack, we can use a simple loader to switch between which theme to load, that will also take care of the music and anything else that needs swapped when changing themes.

i don't know if you are going for custom, or what, but for inspiration, take a listen to some of Kraftwerk's stuff (especially Trans-Europe Express. there are a couple songs on there which make me think of space travel). Tangerine Dream, Mike Oldfeld and Hawkwind could also produce some very nice spacy sounds. or the inspiration for such.

Try some stuff from Generals for starters ... dunno why, but it seems appropriate.

Ok, sounds good, however, you should know that we cannot take any music that is copyrighted, like from games or films. You can use them for inspiration, of course.

Sound effects - completed and working on

Helicopter - complete
Background bleeping - Almost
Drilling - Started
Interface click - Planned

I'll be spending most of my time on the sound effects, not the music. However, any submissions for these are appriciated so I can get on with the music.

If you need to get any completed music to me for editing, use my MSN address, and I'm trusting you with this guys, it's icouldeatwholecarp@yahoo.co.uk

And that is all, time to get back to Sound Forge!

note about sound effects: these are attachable to Query interfaces and buttons (on query interfaces)

Indeed they can. I'll get on it.

Shh! I'm trying to make it seem like a lot of work!<ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/10.gif>

I don't know where the sound files actually are, but I'll take a look. If anybody knows, do say.

I know a Program that converts XA's into wavs but not back. Maxis seems to favor the xa format alot it was used in the sims and in Simcity 4.

Hmm, i did find an XA trick, but I am not keen on using it, for reasons. So, if WAV files will work, fine. If not, we need converters.

no beesbees, editing sound is really easy! it doesn't matter that you have to use XA format, you can import WAV files as XA!

as a little demonstration, I've attached a little thingy I just cooked up in 10 mins (well probably more cos I kept playing with my voice <ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/2.gif border=0>) I simply recorded my own voice as .wav, imported it into a blank lot, and set it as default plop sound

if you plop the lot, you will hear a little message from me <ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/2.gif border=0> Oh, and ingame the lot is called kawabonga on top of your landmarks

depends on what you'd want to do... if you have mp3's just insert them into the custom sound directory and disable all the regular sc4 sound effects <ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/1.gif border=0>
I wouldn't know how to create something that automatically does this though...
as for background music on a lot... i'll look into it <ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/2.gif border=0>

of course, creating your own music mp3's is not that easy... unless anyone has found a copy of MarsEjay lol

small update: there is a property SFX:Ambience Good Sound wich works just the same as plop sound and Query sound, so creating background music on certain lots should not be a problem. If your background sound is in mp3 format, those can be converted into .wav files pretty easily, and if you tone the quality down the filesize should be okay.

i think there should be some heavy metal in the sount track. but thats just my opinoin.

i really think that we should bring back a way to choose songs like in SC3K. i also would like to see better music. me and my cousin would sit around for hours listning to that SC3K music. there should also be heavy metal(yes i admit it wont happen but a little metal cant hurt)

feel free to delete this because im not working on sound

Ok, we need a list. A sound effect list. Just a list of the ones that already exist. This includes all of the sounds that occour when you query a building, when something blows, ambience, everything. I'll start doing a bit of list gathering later today.

By the way, why are the most appropiate pieces of music for SimMars already existing? <ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/10.gif>

Ah, the reason I want a list is because at the moment I'm just making random sound effects, whatever I can think of at the time which is a tad disorganised, and I'm bound to miss something.

well all the current game sound effects are in the sound.dat file, but that file has 2775 entries... so unless there's already a list present, creating one is gonna take quite a bit of time <ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/23.gif>

edit: I just sorted out all the XA files and it comes down to 1680 sound files... still a pretty big list though

Daeley, I know the reader plays them, not sure about datgen, but take some time to go through and play them one by one. I know it's going to take a long time, but that is just one of the things that needs to be done. copy down the tgi of unacceptable ones. we'll go back and try to replace them based on what they seem to sound like they are doing.

Ok, Daeley, your job is to compile a list of recognisable sounds that should be edited. Slow work, but someone's gotta do it.<ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/10.gif>

I was going to attach a collection of Misc. sounds here, but it wouldn't upload. It was 2.5 Mb.

Anyway, I have now made a collection of sounds that sound Right, but I haven't assigned them to anything yet. Well, that's it. I I could have uploaded them, you could hear them... Ah well.
