I could imagine in, say, 1000 0'syears time, someone coming across a archive of wikipedia that only has the future dates up to a certain point listed... and this happening all again.

This is really getting out of hand...there's two types of people: One group is the people who think on December 21st 2012 the main news says a meteorite has struck Earth...group two has the people who wake up at three in the morning on the 22nd and putting huge billboards up on their rooftops saying "YOU OWE ME A HUNDRED BUCKS".

I'm in group two 2.gif

lol, I love it. I'm there too. We've got a pool going at school, wondering who won't show up after Christmas break because they're all hiding in their bomb shelters. The 21st and 22nd are going to be fun days.

Now that you mention it...because everyone is in those bunkers and everything, you can just run down the street and steal a month supply of your favorite Espresso coffee drink. And hell yeah, you're gonna have Disney World all to yourself!

Here's a list of all the things I'm gonna collect for use on that "fateful" day:

Item Quantity Purpose
Sledgehammer 1 Have fun 11.gif
Garbage bags 10 You need something to hold all that stuff you stole 2.gif
Wallet 5 All that money on the ground left by those poor people in desperation to get to the bomb shelter...I'l  just 'clean' it up for them.
Petrol electricity generator 2 With no-one at the power plant, you'll have to keep your ligths on like this. Have an extra one...just in case.
Loudspeakers 5 Keep on playing SFX of dropping bombs. You should have the neighborhood deserted for longer.
Extra gasoline 10 No-one's gonna be at the gas station at this time, so use these to keep the car going. Also useful for keeping that petrol generator going.
Fire 1 Burn your school/office work. Say it was lost in the volcano 3.gif
Laptop computer 1 Heck, even during loneliness you have the strength to play SimCity!
Wireless internet connection expander 1 Keep in touch with other people over the net and talk about how empty Main Street is.

Well it looks as if everyone here is smart enough not to believe in the 2012 nonsense. but for the sake of reigniting the thread, I want to know everyone's opinions on how they think the world will end. Cmon be creative =)

you missed something Shoji... a Ham radio. Here in the US it was established as a means of communication when all others are lost, and it isn't controlled by the gov't other than initial licensing. Anyone can have and use one, and its range is global.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

I suppose by "end" you mean the end of human (or All ) life on this planet

most likey it will be a giant meteor or a large solar flare.

Any kind of enviomental disaster or plauge will not be the "end" of the world, it does mean the end of the society we have now but not the end of human existance.

Discovery ran a series last summer called " Life with out Humans" and it was amazing how quickly they predicted all of mans works would be swollowed up by nature.

There was a book that came out about 2 or 3 years ago about that (I forget the title.) It was pretty good.

Okay I'll read that book...

Easy Bakes has a good point. Often, the end of the world is only about the end of society but wouldn't quite kill everyone. For example, Y2K would only ruin all the computers on Earth But this would only plunge it back to the early 1900s not end it...

It's amazing on how many conspiracies there are about anything. Oh sure, blame it on the Mayans...3.gif Maybe they didn't want to finish it purposely just so they can laugh in heaven or hell(or whatever place for that matter) about how the world is responding to it right now. It's kinda like, you have a calender, you bought it back in '05, the last year it goes to is '07, and you think the world will end just becuase of that. It's amusing.9.gif Also, this is a big dent in the New World Order Conspiracy, don't you think?

One potential theory...

Everyone will go nuts panicking in December of 2012. Politicians or celebrities will go into hiding, just in case. Looting and rioting will occur. While that's hardly apocalyptic, there will be some serious consequences caused by everyone going nuts. Also, there could be a rise in cult killings. The economy will suffer that year because nobody will be Christmas shopping on accounts that they think the world will end. This will cause some businesses to close.

Then, the next day, Earth will still be there, 2012 will be considered a hoax, and millions of dollars of property damage would have been the result of the hoax. Glenn Beck will proceed to blame liberals, Micheal Moore will make a documentary involving capitalism being at fault for 2012, and Obama will make an inspiring speech to the public.

the whole concept is just silly, this whole western preoccupation with "the end of the world" is starting to wear thin, we've had like what, a half dozen or so supposed apocalyptic events not happen in the last twenty years, wasn't there supposed to be WWIII some time in 07? how about "the Big One" way out in cali, that's been around the corner since the 89' Loma Prieta quake. not to mention Y2K. We need to stop fearing what comes next and just start living in the now even like they said, the Myan calendar has a cycle ending in 2012 that's all.

But the History Channel said that Nostradamus said that the world would end. And, as we all know, TV is always right.

my theory is a simple one (simple for a joke)

on December 22, 2012, The president and his cabinet will be hiding in the "secret" bunker, Tom Cruise and will Ferral will be racing in the streets with Will screaming "Help me oprah winafry. then LA catches on fire, with the suburbs being burned and all the identical twins Jason and Jennifer will be burned also.....then the fire will race across the midwest burning crops, exploding farmhouses, and cooking cows at 425 degrees, resulting in..Hamburgers. THen the Fire burns through the south, and all the magical creatures, stream out of the forest screaming BAMBI IS DEAD BAMBI IS DEAD! While the Bears are zonked out, and start eating people, But they are not hungry....and ends up with the fabric of space ripping in TWO!

There is no doubt that someone's world will end in 2012.  I doubt, however, that the whole shebang will go away in any manner.

My prognostications for 2012:

  1. The summer Olympics will proceed normally and without incident.
  2. Sometime late in the year, the Cascadia Fault will let go withh an 8.9 force blast.  This will result in:
    1. Seattle and other west coast cities will be severely damaged.
    2. Vancouver Island will sink into the ocean, submering the City of Victoria, leaving B.C. without a capitol.
    3. The resulting tsunami will wash away several small communities in southern Japan
    4. The San Adreas fault will be triggered, raising the dickens in California.  L. A. will be inundated and the land bridge will be destroyed.  The Salton Sea will return as water.
    5. The entire ring of fire will be activated and will cause a fimbul winter lasting three years.  This is an End of Life Event for most of humanity but ...
  3. Life will go on, on a cleaner, much less populated, planet.

Everyone needs something to be scared of. In the 40's it was Nazis. In the 50's through the 80s it was Communists. In the 90s it was Y2K. The 2000s need a phobia, and this is it.

But this is happening in the 2010's!

I think the whole "needing a phobia" thing is a lot less defined these days due to the net. People can go read about all sorts of things and get scared about them. (earthquakes, storms, you name it its there).

Just to give NASA's two cents, here's their Q&A page on the subject.

http://astrobiology.nasa.gov/ask-an-astrobiologist/intro/nibiru-and-doomsday-2012-questions-and-answers

And if you don't believe NASA, I consider you a pessimist in the extreme, and pity you.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.
