This is the childhood movie that made me scared of killer whales, terrified of ever having a leg cast lest an orca bite it off, and fearful of living close to the ocean--yes, even more so than "Jaws". Too bad I lived on an island at the time!

With the anniversary soon coming up, I'm overdosing on Titanic disaster music and movies.

Below is "Songe d'Automne" ("Dream of Autumn"), an Edwardian light waltz by Archibald Joyce transformed here into a haunting funerary hymn eerily superimposed over period images:

There is debate about the last song played by the ship's band as the doomed liner went down, with the wireless operator as nearest surviving witness to the band in its last moments claiming he heard "Autumn" rather than the now famous "Nearer, My God, to Thee."

For those who remember the 1970s made-for-television movie "S.O.S. Titanic," one of the many memorable ragtime period musical pieces used was a tearful rendition of Scott Joplin's "Bethena:  A Concert Waltz,"  set to piano and violin.  Here is a great performance closely approximating that piano and violin combo:
