This should come as no surprise. Modern music is chalk full of covers and remakes of old songs. The record companies know they can make the song profitable if it was profitable originally, but they also know they can get away with being unoriginal because the young people they're marketing the rehashed music to won't recognize it.

I have heard solo artists and side-projects sample or invoke the original band to which they belonged, and some things are done as 'homage'. It depends on how up-front the artist is about it. Tool is a prime example of being accused of aping another band's work, but they made the work in question their own IMO. They did copy the 'feeling' in an unmistakable way, but not individual riffs.

I would add, if your work was ever used in a TV commercial, it should forever be banished from the radio. For a long time KFC used Sweet Home Alabama as a catch tune, further beating the song into oblivion as if 'classic rock' radio hadn't done that enough.

Adrian Belew... All Her Love Is Mine, Highwire Guitar, and Skyblue Redbird Greenhouse.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

Composers quote from each other all the time.  Elvis first big one, Love Me Tender, is just a new set of lyrics for Aura Lee.  There is a very limited vocabulary in diatonic music, thirteen notes, to be exact.  Composers are bound to run into the same series, even by accident.

Sir Arthur Sullivan wrote one of the most quoted songs.  It is in act two of the Pirates of Penzance.  The pirates number "Come, friends, who plough the sea" is often sung with different lyrics, usually "Hail, hail, the gang's all here".

The classical composers swiped things from each other with mad abandon.  Remember that much of their stuff is based on folk tunes they knew from their childhood or collected.

Currently, I am listening to a piece of original, pure music that I don't think anyone has swiped.  Jean Sebelius' Symphony No. 2.

When it comes to composition, people shouldn't be so stuck up.  The copyright laws are nonsense.

Neon Trees - 1983 (edit: I totally just noticed a couple other people were listening to the same band... talk about a coinky-dink! 3.gif)

I'm also still on my '80s New Wave streak, listening to Eurythmics and Tears for Fears.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. I have heard of many of these songs but "Reflection" is by Christina Aguilara and Lea Salonga.

Right now I am listening to whatever is on the radio.

Sanctuary - Hikaru Utada

The song is from the opening sequence of the English version of Kingdom Hearts 2. The opening song in the original Japanese version is Passion - it's the same music, but with different lyrics.

Lyrics:

wonk uoy naht noitceffa erom deen I

In you and I, there's a new land

Angels in Flight

wonk uoy naht noitceffa erom deen I

My Sanctuary, my Sanctuary yeah

Where fears and lies melt away

Music inside

wonk uoy naht noitceffa erom deen I

What's left of me, what's left of me now

I watch you, fast asleep

All I fear means nothing

In you and I there's a new land

Angels in flight

wonk uoy naht noitceffa erom deen I

My Sanctuary, my Sanctuary yeah

Where fears and lies melt away

Music inside

wonk uoy naht noitceffa erom deen I

What's left of me, what's left of me

snwod dna spu ynam os

My heart's a battleground

snoitome eurt deen I

wonk uoy naht noitceffa erom deen I

snoitome eurt deen i

You show me how to see

That nothing is whole and

Nothing is broken

in you and I there's a new land

Angels in flight

wonk uoy naht noitceffa erom deen I

My Sanctuary, my Sanctuary yeah

Where fears and lies melt away

My fears and lies

Melt away
