hey, I forgot about the gravity 15.gif
10 times larger, because of decrease in air drag the wings will be more efficient at high speed, so our craft will simply need to be larger. you'll have to approximate how to bring them out versus back, but simple math can get you close, 3.33~ out, 3 back, roughly.

This is a question for Redlotus or Gizmo28 ONLY, please no answers to this unless you are one of those two people.

Ok you guys here is the question.
This is regarding bridges and the support heights.

It occured to me while making some bridges last night, that I may need to build the supports that go waaaaaay down. Here is a picture courtesy of MrBisonM to explain:

/idealbb/files/bridge28.JPG

As you can see from point A to point B is the bridge's unique architecture, this much I know about. From point B to point C is where the question lies. Do I need to build these kinds of support extensions in Gmax, or will the game put them there?

If I need to create them myself, then how high should I make them able to go? I don't think they need to be the maximum height that the terrain will allow, because no one will be building like that anyway, but what would a reasonable height be for this?

If I do not need to create them, then here is another question. Is there a set distance between the end of the bridge's unique architecture and the bland concrete columns or can that distance be set by my choosing?

It appears to me from the shot, that the columns actually vary from bridge to bridge, which signals to me that I need to create them myself. Also, it almost looks like the columns can be made very simply with about four pieces, and then the game will repeat certain sections of the column according to the height of the bridge. I figured I would ask either one of yall before I went off and did this. I don't want to waste time on something I don't have to do, if that is indeed the case.

Get back to me at your convenience and let me know what you think. If any of this did not make sense let me know and I will try and clarify it for you.

Again, please do not answer this unless you are Redlotus, or Gizmo28, or you are on the transportation team and have an answer for this.

Thank You

The Great Chozo

**(the picture of the bridge is MrBisonM's. He posted it in the Your Best Looking Bridge thread. I took it and made the graphical additions you see above. I don't want anyone yelling at me because I took his picture, so that is the reason for this disclaimer.)**

Well, I spent 20 minutes composing a response to your post while I was at work earlier.  Unfortunately, Border Manager decided to eat my post.<ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/32.gif>

Anyway, on to answering your questions.  I don't have a whole lot of time, so I'll just give you the low-down on Bridges 101.

Rule #1:  Everything that you see within the perimeter of a tile belongs to one bridge piece.  Of course there are exceptions, since the bridges do have network lots, but the columns are not one of those exceptions.  In essence, yes you do have to create the columns, but they have to be part of the bridge.

Rule #2:A bridge is comprised of a start/end piece (or section) and then a repeating section that can repeat ad infinitum.  How long this repeating section is, is up to you.

As far as how deep you will have to go with the column, I'm not sure.  If I get a chance, I'll try to take a look at some of the current, in-game pieces to get a general idea.

I hope these answer some of your questions (maybe even some that you haven't asked yet).  If not, send me a PM or look for me in the chat room.

Sorry I didn't have more time to be more detailed.

Don't worry about the time red, I'm not concerned about that. I have had posts eaten too, and I know how you feel.

What you posted is all I needed to know right now. I will have to talk to you later on down the road (hehe, pardon the pun) but for now, this is good enough.

Thanks

Chozo

I thought I would go ahead of show an update for the freight engine I made. I have a feeling this isn't what's wanted. If that's the case I'll need to start over.

I'm afraid that doesn't look like part of a train.... It does look like a hovercraft for Mars though. I think a train on Mars would be similar to Earth. Though you would need magnets to keep the trains on the track or you could build a train on what is roller coaster track on earth. You would use magnets to move the train forward and backward. Just some thoughts....

Trolca,

I actually kind of like the design myself, but that is just me. I do think that it needs some more textures and details around the sides, but my intuition tells me that you aren't quite done with it yet.

If it were my BAT file I would probably add some more angles to it, not curves, but hard angles.

Have you ever seen a movie by John Carpenter called, The Ghosts of Mars?
It starred Ice T, and Natasha Henstridge (mmmmmm, Natasha,   oh  sorry) as the main characters. Those two escaped the conflicted area on a train, and I think that train is almost exactly what we were looking for. If you have seen the movie, then you should know what I am talking about, if you haven't then oh well.

This is a good start, and don't trash it just yet, you have three other team members, and a little under a year to work with. I am 100% confident that with our assets and skills and the time we have, we can get the trains looking very good.

Tinker around with some other designs, you never know, you could stumble onto something even better than what you have already posted.

Chozo

I don't think Trolca should stop because no matter how that design ends, there'll be a use for it. Your right TGC, he isn't close to being done yet. By the time he is, I might want to retract my previous statement.

Trolca,
I'd have to say that this latest model is almost perfect.  However, I'd have to agree with smurfer on this one--it doesn't much look like part of a train.  Though it would look excellent as either a moving van or garbage truck--kinda reminds me of a garbage ship(scow?).  Definitely don't trash this model.

And on a very side note, thanks go to Chozo for changing his avatar.<ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/24.gif>  His last one one was...well...disturbing, to say the least.<ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/22.gif>

How about fuel-cell powered aircraft (like ospreys)?

Can you guarantee that they won't fall out of the sky like they do here???

Trolca, your freight maglev looks good, but I'm not sure why it's so light. It almost seems as if it's transparent. The actual model looks fine, but maybe you could touch up the textures. <ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/16.gif> Maybe it could have some sort of antannae array or something in case it is computer controlled?

TGC, I like the new avatar, but now I always get mixed up as to which one is mine and yours since they're both reddish <ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/22.gif>. I'm going to be gone tonight until tomorrow afternoon, so keep working and if you have anything else you'd like me to design, I'll get to it.

Besides Chozo, even if the city doesn't use ospreys, they can still use helicopters, propellered planes, PDE aircraft, & blimps (maybe even mega-blimps)...

I like the way that the frieght maglev looks very industrial, dirty even. Sort of fits how industry on mars looks in my mind. Keep it up guys! Err, and GouRous!

My 1000th post! I'm so proud....*Sniff*

Aircraft wouldn't be like anything we really know of flying today. And I'm pretty sure helicopters will be out, at least the one's we think of today since propellors wouldn't work much in the air, or at least would be restricted. Passenger maglev cars should definately be streamlined, but freight one's should be more focused toward carrying as much as they can than worrying about air friction considering the air is sort of lacking.

And yes TGC, I changed my avatar, but not because of you, because I had an opportunity to take a night shot of my city at full quality <ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/22.gif>.

hah, we dont really need streamlining, the air is very thin, so the coefficient of drag is very different on mars. industrial blocky could easily attain 500km per hour, that's about equivelent to driving 5km per hour on earth for drag, no? <ahttps://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/2.gif>

Hey, what would be really cool is if you could use those pedestrian travel tubes that are in Futurama to get places. That could be a mass transit option.

If i remember correctly from the show, basically its a tube that goes over sidewalks, where a person could speak their destination and they get shot up into the tube, going at high speeds to their destination. Just a thought.

Even if there isn't much need for streamlining, I'd still like to see the passenger maglevs be streamlined just for looks. I know it would be pointless to do if this were real, but blocky passenger vehicles will just look like trains back here.

maybe we can do something 'else' with this then, hrmmm, if we take away streamlining, what can we do that earth cant with a 500kph train?

Well yes I'm new here but I would like to offer advice and a few sketches when i have tiome of ideas for this. I am a fully qualified architect/part time firefighter in real life.

Firstly I need a few things clearing up..

Will the sim mars project be on a mars that has an atmosphere or one where bio domes are required, as this does determine the type of structures you would require for a trnasport system.

If its under a bio dome with a controlled gravity then you can just modernise the current systems to make them more advanced.

If not, then all buildings will require their own micro environment, airlocks etc. so their appearence will be very different.

Secondly, and probably most advantagous with it being outside as to speak. Mars does have a graviy of 0.38 (earth is ) this is taken from a website on mars. Having a lower gravity this means that materials are lighter including the objects being used or shall we say run along them./ This means that we can have less bulky structures, including bridges, say cut the thickness of some mebers down by half. This also allows you to be more adventurous with building shapes and form.

Ideas for transport without being too flamboyant of which we architects are sometimes commented as. A personal transport system would be a good idea. Feed roads with automatic 4 seater electronic mag lev style vehicles with special stops that the vehicle can move sideways to outside buildings. each building has a call point to summon a vehicle, and you can have sevice roads linked to Highway style main routes. All this computer controlled so it prevents accidents. I did see earlier in this CJ some cars similar to what I described but for a monorial, I'll try and sketch up some ideas if I have time.

Maglevs for longdistance. In some areas yopu can have a shopping area with the above call system for vehicles and have it covered with a small bi-dome with moving walkways to trasnsport the shoppers between the different shops.

Well theres a few ideas I need to know what direction to think in. i.e bio dome atmosphere or no atmosphere with building micro environments. It may surprise people but with technology today a buiding can have its own unique microenvironment with its own o2 supply which is scrubbed and recycled. This is the case some some bio labs today.

Anyways look forward to hearing some comments on this.

Cheers
