So, remember when I said that I wouldn't be posting today? Not quite!

Anyways, how's this for a kick in the head: when I stopped and got gas in York, PA earlier, my car's odometer was at 9680.2. As I parked in my driveway, it was at 9980.1. For those of you who didn't already do the math, that makes 299.9 miles between points where I got out of the driver's seat.

It couldn't be 300, could it? I had to go and fall a tenth of a mile short.

Well, there were definitely plenty of times along my route home where I could have inconsequentially kept swerving back and forth between the left and right lanes (light traffic, nobody in the immediate vicinity whose way I would get in). But that would have made no sense considering I wasn't aiming for any particular distance, nor did I know exactly what it would be. It just happened to work out to 299.9.

As for extra fuel cost, yes, changing lanes will have that effect because:

- you're travelling a greater distance

- turning the wheels slows you down, requiring you to burn more to maintain speed

It's a slight, negligible effect (the necessary extra lane shifting would have cost me what, 5 cents?).

And hey, it I was worried about fuel cost, I would have taken the normal 4 hour route home, not the "scenic" 6 hour route. And I wouldn't have been doing 80 mph up I-81, either!
