Are you ready to dump SC4, and move on to CXL?

No. Sim City 4 is still a far better and more interesting game. Maybe after a year or two of patches and mods Cities XL will be better, but if they make you sign up for the Planet Offer to get the patches and mods, I won't even consider buying it.

wait a sec? no railways in CXL? i thought there was gonna be railways, it looked that way from one of the videos on the CXL site? was that a lie?

I must say though, curved roads and adding lanes, im a transport freak, so those things just excite me so much, aaaaah!

But so many ppl have sacrificed so that we can have these curved roads in SC4, like the NAM and FARR, but *****it, when MC comes out with those super bendy roads AND bridges AND tunnels, what am I to do. Those are just so tempting for a transport freak like myself.

Why cant MC just get over itself, copy just about everything they can from SC4, add curved roads/bridges/tunnels, and possibly multiplayer. WHY CANT THEY DO THIS!? ARE THEY STUPID!? it just feels like there trying to trick us all again with high hopes and optimism for the future, but in the end its just gonna be another Societies.

SC4 I have, with no further cash outlay, so that would win for me.

However, I'm way more excited about Tropico 3. Tropico is possibly my favourite building game, so can't wait.

As many have said, I certainly won't dump SC4. I am particularly worried with CXL that, apart from roads, the transport options are going to be poorly implemented with limited options and they will expect you to be part of the planet offer for extra content and patches.

Also it doesnt have quite the same (I know this sounds a bit weird but I can't think of a better way to describe it) magic as a simcity game.

But I probably will still get it as massive cities in 3D do look quite cool (have been building some in the beta), its just a shame that it won't be nearly as impressive as it could be as its probably 'too late' to expand most of the game 15.gif

    likewise.

not only that, but i also would need a new computer, or a whole new motherboard and other components for my current computer to enjoy the game anyway. the beta doesn't run very well on my computer and the graphics looks like absolute vomit because of my hardware limitations.

i can't afford any of that right now and even if i had the money, i wouldn't spend it on that so i could play CXL. not until it can replace SC4 (if it will ever reach that stage...which has become very questionable to me over the months since the beta came out - and that coming from me, who was probably CXL and MC's biggest supporter and most contributive website member, certainly says a lot IMO  2.gif).

My current computer can barely run SC4, and even then only without anything running in the background. That alone is reason enough for me not to get something even more processor-intensive.

Even with its problems and limitations, I'll still keep my SimCity 4 in my disk drive (or at least still installed) for the time being.

Cities XL is basically City Life 3. Its horrible. I don't see it as a builder, its more about trying to keeppicky residents happy. I dont find it fun. Also now that you will have to pay for mass transit thats another thing.

Guys I am telling you now DONT PRE-ORDER you will regret it.

Well, if you're saying that cause you played the beta, and gave up, then you don't know what the game is like now. It has improved a great deal, and will continue to improve after release. Yes, pre-order is not the best idea, but it's not horrilble. Keeping your residents happy is just like a REAL city, so that part is ok.

The beta has changed, believe it or not. It might be worth another shot. Keep in mind, the beta was supposed to be the way it was, all betas are. The purpose is to fix critical errors before release time, and MC did that very well.

I'm not exactly sure about this. I mean SC4 has been with us for a very long time now and in that time we have managed to make so many things for the game. I haven't been able to test the beta version yet so it'll be hard to say. MC still has a lot of time to add some more features and what not. One thing is for sure. The game is worth getting a look at.

You're right. It is a game with much potential, but I'll always keep SC4.

Interesting thread. To be honest, my knowledge of Cities XL is very limited. I need to research the game more and take a look at what it really has to offer. Honestly, Sim City 4 is one of those games that will be very hard for me to put on the shelf. I am so happy that a real SC4 Community still exists and people are playing the game and releasing CJs. Also the custom content is fabulous and gives the game a whole new angle. The NAM is one of the greatest additions to the game and I feel like I'm playing a whole different game. So my answer is no, I'm not ready to ditch SC4 and move on to Cities XL. But again, I'm basing it off how amazing the community has made SC4. Cities XL isn't around yet, nor do I know anything about it. 3.gif

No, it would be impossible to ditch SC4 and move on to CXL. To me CXL has a tremendous long journey ahead of it before it can even slightly compete with the likes of SC4. There really just isn't that much gameplay value in CXL to me, I find it actually quite dull and too restrictive in allowing me to build my cities. It honestly reminds me of some of the 'cheaper' early "tycoon" games with the way it locks buildings and doesn't allow me to decide when I wish to use them and which to me is just *one* of the major failures of CXL.

Add in the no mass transit for the singleplayer portion of the game and it's a dead duck issue for me, it's not worth picking up unfortunately. I had high hopes with the hyped version of CXL but now after playing it I see it won't come even slightly close to living up to what MC attempted to compete with (SC4). They've made terrible mistakes in their judgement of the market audience (assuming it's SC4 players) and what we wanted in a shiny new city building game. So, no, I won't be ditching SC4 for CXL, they're two products that don't even remotely come close to competing with each other, and quite honestly after all these years of custom content I don't believe theres anyway that they could even compete with SC4.

We still see SC4 on the shelves in the retail outlets and I think this speaks volumes. It will be interesting to see in 9 or more years if CXL is on the retail outlets shelves or completely forgotten after 1 year. My guess is that it will not be seen on the retail shelves in 9 years, unless they do something completely drastic in the game to change it around and make it a great city building game.

Lol, when it hits the bargain bin. Of course, if CXL is flat-out better, we need to accept it.

I'm gonna personally wait about 1-3 months after CXL comes out before getting it. There are several reasons for this. First, there's the fact that I have no source of income. I won't have any way to get money for at least a year. Second, I want to wait for reviews like I did with SCS. Just in case.

So, it all depends on how good CXL is before I make a decision on SC4.

Yea. I'm saying that I will always keep SC4, but if CXL appears to better, I'll just play that more. I've been a member of the CXL site for awhile, and it does look pretty good, but that's me.

I am a BETA tester for CXL, and I must say that it is pretty good. However, comparing it to SC4 is a bit difficult simply because its like comparing Age of Empires to Risk, two completely different games with sort of the same objective(in this case, conquer the world, or at least your opponent). I will not "dump" SC4, but rather play both at the same rate, much as I do currently. I have a feeling that all of you will enjoy the completed version of XL!

No, I wouldn't be. I didn't think it was good either, but it will be. There will be GEMs that will make it better. I have my negative comments too, but I think this game will be satsfactry.  BTW, I believe the NDA is over.

The NDA is not over for the Beta. We can only talk about the demo. For all who did not get in the Beta, wait till the NDA is over and hear your fellow city builders who tasted this thing first hand. Trust me it will be interesting.

As for SC4, better not uninstall because you will most likely need a fix. SC4 is not going anywhere no time soon. In fact CXL may give it more appreciation.

But hey, some people defend SC Societies to this day................

I lost disk 2 of SimCity 4 Deluxe so I am stuck with SIms 2 and Cities Xl demo. The EU demo is great and I am going to get the American demo next week and register that with a different name. From what I can ascertain from the demo, however, I do not see where Elites will work, possibly medium and large high-tech industry and I would assume large offices also because SimCity 4 had upper class offices. By the way, Cities Unlimited is City Life 2 and Cities XL is what Cities Unlimited turned into, thus Cities XL is indeed City life 2 or 3. Now I have a question: should I preorder Limited Edition or wait until I replace my Intel Q6600 with a Q9650, my nVIDIA GeForce 8500GT with whatever is recommended (what graphics card gives me the best quality for a reasonable price?), add more RAM, and replace Vista Home Premium 32 bit with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (by the way, I have $1000 dollars for upgrading my $1000 dollar computer and I might need to get a part time job and go to a cheap electronics store in order to get everything)? I might need a new power supply though...

Actually, I don't believe Cities XL will be even be available by retail in the United States. This was announced on the old main site, here's a secondary source:

Monte Cristo Games is apparently not willing to wait any longer for a US retail distribution deal for their city simulation Cities XL. On the games official web site the dev team has announced that the game will be self-published by them . . but will not be released (yet) in
