@Duke87:  I am not so much concerned about security with Thunderbird, as the organizational features that allow mail to be categorized, flagged and compressed.  I guess I use e-mail a lot more than you do since I am doing some remote volunteer work with some of the software I use.

Took the effort to rename "Network Neighborhood" to "My Network Places", eh? 2.gif

Also, minus points for anachronism by having Firefox (4.0 beta no less!) on there. You should get Netscape. 3.gif

Nope, I don't know how, but whatever I downloaded re-named it and put it right there on the desktop for me!

As you probably guessed, that's XP modded to look like 95 (felt a bit nostalgic), but it's not actually on a separate machine. It's Windows XP Mode running under 7 - that's why the Beta FF is on there, don’t want beta programs on my main desktop. You're right though, having the shortcut there totally kills the illusion! 3.gif

Your main desktop looks like an out of focus shot of a raveled, multicolor anchor cable.  W7, I presume.  I am like you and hate desk top clutter, so I use the panel that contains my operating menu for most frequent stuff, even games.  Linux is a different kettle of fish, and you can have a panel on each border if you wish.  I use a few desktop icons because I am lazy.

Again my desktop. Gnome desktop under Linux Mint 10, still. Added more screenlets (Nowplaying, stickers, Lost Countdown [To Panamerican Games], new sensors for disks and swap, and a RSS feed for Simtropolis Twitter), and chaged wallpaper to one of Megaherz. I love my desktop.

Empty, that's how I like it. And you may notice that it's cold. Too cold.

And yes, I use Vista, the horror! :P

It's a 'color woodcut' by the Japanese artist Hokusai, from the 19th century indeed . In the background you can see Mount Fuji, and the work is most often called The Great Wave (off Kanagawa).

Here's my current one:

desktopkk.jpg

Theme: ClearScreen Sharp; Rainmeter for the desktop, using the Omnimo 3.1 style.

May be best to right-click: view image or similar on the above. Gets cut off by the ST theme if you just click on it normally.

Ubuntu has lots of desktops in the can if you want one. Try cosmos. It changes when you login.

Continuing the monthly "My Pets" feature, here is my new desktop for April, 2011.

Two cats: Nemo (Black DSH) and Scarlett O'Hairy (Pure Bred Persian Red Tabby). Enjoy.

Desk-11-04.jpg

Nemo (male) was euthanized when we decided we could not treat his Diabetes Mellitisl

Scarlett (female) was given up for adoption shortly after my wife passed away.

This photo was taken in our office in 2004.

It's cute that "Link to ShoppingList" seemingly points to Nemo's ear! Like many a cat owner, we must purchase according to the cats' tastes.

And timmie has a Hokusai print..."ukiyo-e" are such fascinating prints from another world, when feudal Japan was closed in upon itself into its own insular golden age. "Meisho" are depictions of famous places, and often whole series were devoted to views of Mt. Fuji or scenes along the bustling trunk road between Kyoto and Edo. Combined with scroll maps, and it is like 17th century Tokugawa tourist guides. Europeans would soon be amazed by these prints used as mere wrapping paper for the bulk consumer porcelain exported to the West.

Meanwhile, I've added a few famous places to my rotating desktop backgrounds over the past months which kinda fit the theme:

Tower gate of the Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto.

desktopfushimiinaritais.jpg

Gion quarter in Kyoto. Why can't our urban alleyways be so picturesque.

desktopgion.jpg

Wakayama Castle in Wakayama City in Wakayama Prefecture. As Fozzie Bear would say, "Wakka Wakka Wakka!"

desktopwakayamajo.jpg

Scenic hills outside Kyoto.

desktopkyotohills.jpg

Phoenix Hall of the Byodo-in replica on Oahu.

desktopbyodoin.jpg

Atrium of the Tokyo International Forum in Tokyo.

desktoptokyoforum.jpg

Oh, Brave New World, that has such people in it...

I'm not going to post a screenshot of my actual desktop, because it's so cluttered you wouldn't be able to see any coherent picture in the background. It's that bad.

Nice picture. I assume its your desktop background. If you are having desktop clutter problems, there are all kinds of alternatives, like stashing common stuff in the task bar, lesser used stuff in folders, etc.

You can see from my desktop (back up a bit) that I make use of my top panel for most things, and only have a few hot things on the desktop.

Sometimes we let ideas of convenience mess up our environment.

Disagree.

If you want a real operating system, switch (or dual boot) a Linux distribution. I am currently on UBUNTU 10.10 x86_64, which is small, fast, simple and can run windows .exe's with either wine (for older stuff) or mono for stuff created with Visual Studio.NET.

Linux is the Swiss army knife of operating systems and it can open many cans. You do have to be slightly more technically aware with it to really get things done, but then you pretty much have to be with XP as well. The best thing about most Linux distributions is that they are free, and community-supported by a world-wide group.

I am also testing the new (release at the end of this month) version 11.04. It is looking good, but not ready for people in general yet. It seems to be having a kernel of the week syndrome.

EDIT: And one more thing about Linux, it includes a full set of high-security features which are optional, but can be invoked to give you a very safe multiple user operating environment, complete with ACL's to keep snoopers out. It can be an administrative drag, but once you get it working, your system (server) is pretty safe. On the server version, you can run the apache server, which is pretty well known and pretty good if you don't fool with it too much, eh Dirk?

You might want to look at Windows 7. There are some places where XP is better than 7, but 7 also has places where it is better than XP. Security is definitely one of those places.
