Palma Cathedral

Gothic-Cathedral-Palma-de-Mallorca-450x290.jpg

Description

The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, more commonly referred to as La Seu, is a Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral located inPalma, Majorca, Spain, built on the site of a pre-existing Arab mosque. It is 121 metres long, 55 metres wide and its nave is 44 metres tall. Designed in the Catalan Gothic style but with Northern European influences.

Why this would be beneficial for the game or community

It's very simple: it is the most famous picture of tourism in Spain. Millions of people come to Mallorca each year and this is the main landmark of the island.

Shard London Bridge (previously known as London Bridge Tower,[4][5] and also known as the Shard of Glass,[6][7] 32 London Bridge, and The Shard) is a pyramid-shaped skyscraper under construction in Southwark, London which in December 2011 became the tallest building in the European Union. When completed in May 2012, it will stand at 310 m (1,017 ft) tall. The Pantheon of Rome

aerialpantheon.jpg

The Pantheon of Rome

Description:

The building is circular with a portico of large granite Corinthian columns (eight in the first rank and two groups of four behind) under a pediment. A rectangular vestibule links the porch to the rotunda, which is under a coffered, concrete dome, with a central opening (oculus) to the sky. Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome.[3] The height to the oculus and the diameter of the interior circle are the same, 43.3 metres (142 ft).[4]

It is one of the best preserved of all Roman buildings. It has been in continuous use throughout its history, and since the 7th century, the Pantheon has been used as a Roman Catholic church dedicated to "St. Mary and the Martyrs" but informally known as "Santa Maria della Rotonda."[5] The square in front of the Pantheon is called Piazza della Rotonda.

Why this would be beneficial for the game or community

The Pantheon of Rome is one of the most known buildings of Rome. In my opinion, we haven't got hardly any bulidings about the most historical and beautiful city of the world. With this building we could bring some history to our city. The central opening of it is unique, so this is a obligatory landmark for sim city!

Thanks

SYDNEY - Anthony Hordens Building

Dear all Australian BATters:

Anthony-Hordens-Building-Simon-Fieldhouse.jpg

Description:

Anthony Horderns was the largest department store in Sydney, Australia. It was originally established by a free immigrant from England, Anthony Hordern, in 1823, as a drapery shop. A further large mensware store was in upper George Street, and Hordern’s also operated one of the largest mail order businesses in Australia. The development of American-style suburban shopping malls during the later 1960s, coupled with fiercer competition in the city, is said to have sealed the fate of the store.

Why this would be beneficial for the game or community:

I have noticed the sheer lack of Australian buildings, old or new on the forum. This is a fantastic building for any kind of city centre, either stand-alone or W2W. It would be beneficial as a historical building as it no longer exists but a few legacies are left behind in Sydney such as Hordern Pavilion, Hordern Towers (within the World Square development), and the Presbyterian Ladies’ College.

SYDNEY - Burns Philp Building

Dear all Australian BATters:

Buns-Philp-Building-Simon-Fieldhouse.jpg

Description:

Burns Philp was a powerful mercantile company that operated throughout the South Pacific. Its corporate prestige is suggested by the impressive façade of the company’s head office in Sydney, while the company’s use of the Badge of NSW suggests close links with the State’s establishment. This building sits on Bridge Street.

Why this would be beneficial for the game or community:

I have noticed the sheer lack of Australian buildings, old or new on the forum. This would suit any city, be it Australian, European or American. It has an attractive Victorian style architecture and would fit in beautifully with almost all tilesets. Perfect for reconstructing a realistic city.

SYDNEY - Chief Secretary's Building

Dear all Australian BATters:

Chief-Secretarys-Building-Simon-Fieldhouse.jpg

Description:

The Chief Secretary’s Building (originally the Colonial Secretary’s Building) is an historic Sydney landmark located at 121 Macquarie Street, 65 Bridge Street and 44-50 Phillip Street. The sandstone building was the seat of colonial administration, has been used continuously by the Government of New South Wales, and even today holds the office of the Governor of New South Wales. Its main occupant is the Industrial Relations Commission of New South Wales; several of the larger rooms are now courtrooms.

“ …(this) pile of a building like a veritable ‘poem in stone’ adorns the northern portion of Macquarie Street. ”

—Illustrated Sydney News, 28 February 1891

Constructed 1873-1880, the building was designed by colonial architect James Barnet. Its style has been called “Venetian Renaissance” as well as Victorian Free Classical. A fifth floor and dome were added in the 1890s by Barnet’s successor Walter Liberty Vernon in the Victorian Second Empire style, as well as an extension south at 50 Phillip Street. Barnet resented the additions, which lessened the resemblance to his model, the 16th Century Palazzo Farnese in Rome, completed by Michelangelo after Farnese became Pope Paul III. The dome was originally covered in aluminium in 1895-1896, one of the earliest such uses of this metal in the world.

Extensive restorations between 1988 and 2005 were performed with a degree of care that set new standards. It is open to the public; several historical displays interpret the building’s history, and the glass lift shafts allow archaeological viewing of the construction.

Why this would be beneficial for the game or community:

I have noticed the sheer lack of Australian buildings, old or new on the forum. This building is a classic example of Australia's best architecture and would blend in with any type of city all over the world. Perfect for a reconstruction of a realistic city or old area.

SYDNEY - Customs House Circular Quay

Dear all Australian BATters:

Customs-House-Circular-Quay-Simon-Fieldhouse.jpg

Description:

The Customs House is an historic Sydney landmark located in the city’s Circular Quay area. Constructed initially in 1844-1845, the building served as the headquarters of the Customs Service until 1990. Ownership was then transferred from the Commonwealth Government of Australia to the City of Sydney Council in 1994, when it became a venue for exhibitions and private functions. After being refurbished in 2003, it has also become the new home of the City of Sydney Library.

Why this would be beneficial for the game or community:

I have noticed the sheer lack of Australian buildings, old or new on the forum. This building is a classic example of Australia's best architecture and would blend in with any type of city all over the world. Perfect for a reconstruction of a realistic city or old area. This could either be a civic, reward or educational building depending on function.

SYDNEY - Perpetual Trustee Building

Dear all Australian BATters:

Perpetual-Trustee-Building-Simon-Fieldhouse-e1323666447820.jpg

Description:

The Perpetual Trustee Executor and Agency Company Limited was set up in 1885. An attempt at incorporation failed on the grounds that the company did not have enough capital for security. Following this failure, the company was dissolved in 1886 and the Perpetual Trustee Company was formed with a base of 1 000 000 pounds. Application for incorporation passed through State Parliament in June 1888. The Company became one of the first trustee companies to be established in Australia and took place at a time of complex development in the commercial economy.

The Perpetual Trustee Company Building comprises 1 ground level, 7 upper levels and a basement. With the exception of lightwells to the sides, covers the complete area of the site. The overall style of the building is Edwardian ‘Grand Manner’ which is characterised in the building by Baroque inspired columns, mansard roof form embellished with dormer windows and dominant overhanging cornice supported on brackets.

Why this would be beneficial for the game or community:

I have noticed the sheer lack of Australian buildings, old or new on the forum. This almost Manhattan-esque building would be perfect for making realistic downtown busy avenues, ideally W2W - either residential or commerical.

SYDNEY - Strand Arcade

Dear all Australian BATters:

Strand-Arcade-Simon-Fieldhouse-e1323664676686.jpg

Description:

The Strand Arcade is a Victorian-style shopping arcade. It is located in the heart of the Sydney central business district, between Pitt Street Mall and George Street. Deigned by English architect John Spencer, ‘The Strand’ was built in 1891 and was opened in 1892, as the fifth and last of the arcades built in Sydney in the Victorian era. It is the only one remaining in its original form today.

The Arcade was originally known as the ‘City Arcade’ and sometimes as ‘Arcade Street’. In 1981 it was named after the famous London Street that links the city of London and the city of Westminster. The Strand was London’s smartest theatre, hotel and shopping street in the early 1900s.

The arcade became run down. During restoration work, a fire broke out on the morning of 25 May 1976. The arcade was partly destroyed. Restoration began again and the arcade, back to its original grandeur, re-opened in 1977.

Today, The Strand houses Australian designer labels such as Alannah Hill, Alex Perry, Jayson Brunsdon, Victoria Buckley Jewellery, Terry Biviano and Fleur Wood. It has been restored extensively and is a major element in the Pitt Street Mall.

Why this would be beneficial for the game or community:

I have noticed the sheer lack of Australian buildings, old or new on the forum. In addition, I don't think there are any shopping arcades on the STEX at all. Arcades are present in many worldwide cities and are full of character, linking one street to another. This building has a highly attractive facade and would look excellent as either a commerical building or residential building without the shop frontages.

SYDNEY - The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital

Dear all Australian BATters:

Royal-Prince-Alfred-Hospital-Sydney-Simon-Fieldhouse.jpg

Description:

The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (abbreviated RPAH or RPA, and sometimes shortened to PA Hospital) is a major public teaching hospital in Sydney, Australia, located on Missenden Road in Camperdown. It is a teaching hospital of the Central Clinical School of Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney and is situated in proximity to the Blackburn Building of the university’s main campus. RPAH is the largest hospital in the Sydney Local Health District, with approximately 700 beds (circa 2005). Following a $350 million redevelopment, the perinatal hospital King George V Memorial Hospital has been incorporated into it.

Why this would be beneficial for the game or community:

I have noticed the sheer lack of Australian buildings, old or new on the forum. This Victorian-style building would look excellent in any type of city and could function either as its original function as a hopsital or a commerical, or residential townhouse.

SYDNEY - Sydney Hospital

Dear all Australian BATters:

Sydney-Hospital-Simon-Fieldhouse.jpg

Description:

Sydney Hospital is a major hospital in Sydney, Australia, located on Macquarie Street in the Sydney central business district. It is the oldest hospital in Australia, dating back to 1788, and has been at its current location since 1811. It first received the name Sydney Hospital in 1881.

Why this would be beneficial for the game or community:

I have noticed the sheer lack of Australian buildings, old or new on the forum. This would add character to any type of city and could function either as a hospital or any other sort of civic building in an imposing location in your cities.

MELBOURNE - General Post Office

Dear all Australian BATters:

Melbourne-GPO-Simon-Fieldhouse.jpg

Description:

Melbourne’s GPO has been in and out of the spotlight over the past one hundred and fifty years, but the building has remained close to the city’s heart. In fact, it is the city’s heart. Did you know that road distances from Melbourne are measured in kilometres from Melbourne’s GPO?

Melbourne’s GPO’s journey from postal hall to fashion hub makes for an interesting and sometimes dramatic tale. The current building was designed in neo-Renaissance style – the height of mid-1800′s fashion. It is now heritage listed and considered one of Australia’s most important public buildings.

Why this would be beneficial for the game or community:

I have noticed the sheer lack of Australian buildings, old or new on the forum. This would add character to any type of city and could function either as a hospital or any other sort of civic building in an imposing location in your cities.

ADELAIDE - 21-25 Currie Street

Dear all Australian BATters:

21-25-Currie-Street-Adelaide-Simon-Fieldhouse.jpg

Description:

Currie Street is a main street in the Adelaide city centre, in Adelaide, South Australia. It runs east-to-west from King William Street, through Light Square, to West Terrace on the western edge of the city centre.

The street changes its name to Glover Avenue as it continues west through the Adelaide Park Lands and under the Bakewell Bridge. It then changes name to Henley Beach Road as it continues through the western suburbs to the seaside, terminating at Henley Beach South.

On the east side of King William Street, it changes name to Grenfell Street.

Why this would be beneficial for the game or community:

I have noticed the sheer lack of Australian buildings, old or new on the forum. This would add character to any type of city and could function either as a hospital or any other sort of civic building in an imposing location in your cities. This would be great as either a civic, reward or commercial building.

ADELAIDE - Edmund Wright Building

Dear all Australian BATters:

Edmund-Wright-Building-Adelaide-Simon-Fieldhouse.jpg

Description:

This building was designed by Edmond W. Wright for The Bank of South Australia. Work commenced late in 1875 and the building was completed by 1878, and the bank opened for the first time on 21st of June of that year.

This building features extensive renaissance style stonework that was completed by William Maxwell, a well known and famous Scottish sculptor. Joseph Durham a famous British sculptor and painter, also journeyed to Adelaide to work on the building.

The entrance hall features columns of Devonshire marble, with doors of cedar, and marble floor tiles. The central banking chamber is very lofty and features an elaborately decorated ceiling

Equally, it would make an imposing residential building for wealthy areas in a city.

Boji Tower

View from the East, showing Clock

Boji Tower and Clock Face at night

This is the tallest building in Lansing, MI, and was built in between 1929 and 1931.

It's a historical landmark, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Its construction was funded by R. E. Olds (Oldsmobile). It would be Simtropolis' only structure from Michigan's capital, Lansing.

I think the way to make strassburg and mailand and palma cathedral is very similar.

Indeed, the techniques would be similar, but that's bad news, because it means that to BAT each one will be very hard and time consuming. That's why it is unlikely that someone will take the time to make them.

do u think my idea about the Main Tower is good?

Its a nice building, however, I don't care much for skyscrapers... but there are lots of BATers who I'm sure would be interested in making them.

The palace of the soviets

03.jpg

soviet_palace_01.jpg

Description:

the total height increased from 260 m (853 ft) to 415 m (1,362 ft).

-

A project to construct an administrative center and a congress hall in Moscow, Russia, near the Kremlin, on the site of the demolished Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The architectural contest for the Palace of the Soviets (1931–1933) was won by Boris Iofan's neoclassical concept, subsequently revised by Iofan, Vladimir Shchuko and Vladimir Gelfreikh into a supertall skyscraper. If built, it would have become the world's tallest structure of its time. Construction started in 1937, and was terminated by the German invasion in 1941. In 1941–1942, its steel frame was disassembled for use in fortifications and bridges. Construction was never resumed. In 1958, the foundations of the Palace were converted into what would become the world's largest open-air swimming pool. The Cathedral was rebuilt in 1995–2000.
