Seriously - who is going to pay £30 for a game and then an additional £180 over 5 years for the ability to catch a bus?quote>

This is what I'm thinking, right here. I pre-ordered this, but I know I'm getting a BETA product that won't have everything that the producers wanted in it for release, and then I have to get a SUBSCRIPTION to get updates to a product.

I won't play online just for that. I'll gladly pay to play single player, and did.

Also, Monte Cristo will be losing money rather than making it on this endeavor at $6/mo. The majority of gamers, as far as my research has gone, won't pay $6/mo for instanced RTS gameplay like this. They might pay $2 to show off their city because thats pocket change to them, and a lot more players would sign up for it. Sure, you'd need 3 players for every 1 at $6/mo, but they could get that and then some at a "measly" [profitable] $2 per month.

Oh well, I'll wait on that.

Edited for derogatory bashing.

I'm very disappointed that Cities XL is restricting mass transporations even highways????? to the Planet Offer (pay to play) only.

There is a very good chance I will not be buying this game.

Hi all

I'm pretty new and confused by the following:

If I was to buy the odd month here and there, surely I'd be able to "update" my game, including all the mass transit stuff and then play SP? Or do the updates only work with the planet offer and not in SP?

I'm only saying this because it seems the planet offer is causing major discontent, but if all I have to do is pay for one month in every 6 months to get 6, then it may not be such a bad thing if I'm gettinfg ALL updates from those previous months (think of WOW when you may have not played for a year but you get a years worth of updates)

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

The extra features will only work in the on-line game. If you start a solo game the transport options will vanish.

It's simple as that.

    Hey guys,

I'm new (not really new but new to Cities XL, I played Sim City 4) and I have 3 specific questions about Cities XL:

    1. Will the game require you to pay monthly to play it or is it one time and if you want extra stuff + multiplayer pay monthly?

    2. Will the game requre you to be online and log on to an account to play?

    3. Will you have online statistics on your account?

    Regards,

    Michael63000

    1. The monthly fee is only if you wish to be a part of the Planet Offer. If not, you can still play in single player. Planet Offer, however, will give you extra content monthly, and allows for the online play.

    2. I'm not sure. I can't see why, if you're a subscriber, it wouldn't let you play offline.

    3. Yes.

Yes to all you questions, and please do read the other threads which all answer your questions before making a new one.

"Have to be online"? If you're talking about pay to play, then no, unless you want additional features and online play.

So far as I know, you'll need to create an account and activate it online before you can play it, but after that point the single player game will be strictly offline. If you sign up for the Planet Offer, there will be a monthly fee for that and you'll need the internet for the multiplayer, of course. 2.gif

i think thats right. people have got their copy early and have installed it but can't play it yet because you need to register your copy online.

I have the following question: How is the payment done? By means of a credit card? Is there a possibility of Automatische Incasso for Dutch players that has an bank account at the ING Bank (formerly known as the Postbank)? Automatische Incasso (Dutch for automatic charging) means that automatically the money for Cities XL is subtracted from the amount of money on that bank account, without doing anything periodically.

We don't know details that dirty yet as the servers aren't up yet to register. Once that happens (release day), we'll know, but I would suggest having a credit card as backup if you want the online play features.

    Oi...

Planet Offer is certainly disappointing. As of right now, Single Player looks...okay. The problem is, Monte Cristo is not going to let the community make it more than okay. Hopefully, after a while, they'll offer some custom content tools so that we can actually do something interesting with the game. Granted, I bet I'm going to have a blast with this game for about a month. But after that is where the problem lies. If they let us customize our game a bit more, they'll be selling copies like hotcakes, especially if they make these tools easy for everyone to use (But still complex enough for those that are seasoned at things like this).

Bottom Line is if you create a city online in the Planet Offer you always have to be online to play that particular city. Whether or not you pay your monthly fee you will be able to play any single player offline cities with limitied options. You won't be abel to play your online city in offline mode.

i think loosing your cities if you don't load them once every 3 months or whatever and also loosing them if you stop playing  for the PO is one of the problems of the PO. If they let us keep PO content and use it in single player that problem could be solved because you could keep your cities and play them in single mode if you loose the PO.

I don't know about you but i seem to get quite attached to my cities. i sc4 i had about 6 or so large cities that i played on a regular basis, all with high weatlh skyscrapers and apartment buildings. Sometimes i would fancy trying something different and would start a new city but plan it differently. around these cities i had some 'less loved' cities, whose only purpose was to develop landfills and dirty industry, and i used these so i didn't have to have any of that in my 'nice' cities. I also had some 'rural' cities, with farms and maybe one or two small towns, but i rarely visited these after they were finished.

with CXL, there is none of that. OK the amount of space you get to build your city on is the size of a small SC4 region, but it just doesn't have the same feeling of 'achievement' that SC4 had.

It really is quite artful.  The way it works in relation to SC4 is that you can basically trade RCI and utilities on an exchange.  So if you have extra workers you can trade them for money and then buy heavy industry.  Thoeretically it allows you to build an all industrial or all office/tourism city.  I have my city up to 700k people and it is pretty challenging trying to stay solvent both in money and resources.  Connections bought through connections and airport/ports gve you capacity to make extra trades and the special buildings are nice.  I went heavily office and eventually got reward buildings that were corporate hqs for utility companies give me a 35% bonus to their production.

Generally I also like how services can be put generally anywhere.

    Sound's cool 4.gif

I hate to be negative, but I'm really trying to understand all aspects of the game. That sounds like a lot of good stuff, but are you experiencing anything bad?

    Thanks,

    Brandon

    Negatives for me would be

    1. little choppy

    2. can't place parks in nonroad enclosed areas(although they do ake up all the space given to them).  So shorelines aren't realistic.

    3. Traffic can get bad and you dont get early access to large capacity roads(i assume the hard mode lets you do this though)

    4. Bridge building is pretty complicated.

    5. Haven't been able to succesfully place a port.  Pain in the ass compared even to sc4.

    6. Utility resources are very limited.
