Born and raised in Peru so my native language. I attended the German school there from Kindergarten through 9th'm also grade, so I used to be almost fluent in it, but have since forgotten a bit. And obviously, I'm also fluent in the English language. I took a year of French, but didn't learn much. I can understand Latin, if that counts 4.gif

Once upon a time, I spoke halfway decent French, but those skills are lost and gone forever (I minored in French in college).

I'm in the process of learning Japanese. It ain't easy, but I'm doing a decent job of it. Living here helps...

My first language is English.

The first foreign language I began learning was Gaelic. I can order a beer and thank you for it... thats about all I can do with Gaelic.

I speak enough French to get by in a a French-speaking region.

The French helps me understand Italian and Spanish... although I shoud be better with Spanish since I studied it... but I never follwed through.

I also studied a little bit of Latin, which of course is handy when you come across a word you've never seen before.

But the only tongues I feel confident enough with to live with are English and French.

I was born and I live in Mexico, so Spanish is my mothertongue.

I studied English at school for more than 10 years, but now I'm far from being fluent. I actually learnt to read English and Spanish at the same time. I stopped and I'm forgetting lots of things.

I started learning Portuguese thre years ago (self-taught). I didn't took it so seriously until last year when I officially started Portuguese at the university.

I'm pretending to learn Japanese at school too.

I can write and read some very basic Italian.

I can understand Galician TV programs, as it is a very special language somewhere between Spanish and Portuguese.

Actually I can say I only know Spanish. I'm not good enough at other languages to say I speak them well.

Looks OK to me, one or two minor mistakes, but your English is better than you would like to admit.

You're doing well, from what I see (at least in writing).

Know that the past tense of "Learn" in English is "Learned", not "Learnt".  "Learnt" is not a word used in English any longer.

Actually Learnt is still often used by Engish people.

Also, the past participle (I think that is the correct tense name) in proper form is "Didn't Take", not "Didn't Took".  "Took" is only used when it is the sole verb (not including a compound with "To Have" "To Do").

EDIT:  "Taken" is used with "To Have".

The verb is to take. I take, you take etc. I have taken, you have taken etc. I took, you took etc.

So it would be right to say I didn't take instead of I didn't took

quote>

Hope this helps, but as I said your English is OK keep it up good luck.

I speak Dutch (it's my native language), French (because of the 10 million inhabitants of Belgium, 4 million are French-speaking, and it is a compulsory language in 'High School') and English (also compulsory).

I understand German and can myself a tiny little bit clear in German.

Though my father is Greek, I don't speak the language at all. And that is quite sad.

In the future, I'd like to learn Swedish. And the only reason for that is the fact that I just LOVE Sweden. Jag älsker Sverige!

Yay :)

So hummer,

I am from Brazil and I speak English, Spanish and Brazilian. My mother language is Brazilian that is far different from Portuguese. Let's talk Brazilian:

Brazilian: "Aquele moleque adora jogar Sim City, fica horas na frente do computador..."

Portuguese: "Aquele puto adora jogar Sim City, fica horas no computador"

English: "That boy loves to play Sim City and stay hours in front of computer playing it..."

All have the same meaning but "puto" em Brazilian is kind of a bad word (light b.i.t.c.h for man)... hahahahaha... there are many other words like that... 2.gif

Currently, I am only fluent in English, my native language. However, I have an interest in studying French, Spanish, and possibly German. (I have studied some Spanish and French, and know just a tad bit of each)

Bem eu sou Brasileiro e sei falar portugues fluentemente, mesmo que seja dificil entender alguns sotaques daqui, principalmente os do nordeste.

Well, I'm from Brazil and can speak Portuguese fluently even if its hard to understand some accents here from Brazil.

I also know's enough English so I could stay in the Uk without a problem, but not enough to know it fluently.

Jo también entiendo el castelhano hablado pero no consigo escrever muy bien.

I can understand Spanish and write a bit of it.

I also can understand Galego but i cant write it.

And i know a little bit of french,

And I'm also pretending to learn Arabic,German and Italian.

I speak fluent English and Tagalog. I am quite familiar with other Filipino dialects however, I find it difficult to engage in a long conversation with some. I'm studying French and I'm probably in the intermediate level. I could converse but I'm sure there will be some problems.

I would really love to learn Spanish. Of course, we all know some spanish but I really want to learn it.

I speak English, but I hate Latin, I am taking two years of it (one is out of the way) and it is no "walk in the park" either. However, I would like to learn French, German, and/or Dutch. I would like to learn and speak something European. It is kind of hard speaking a dead language anyways. =]

Protip: the forum here doesn't recognize characters from alphabets other than Latin and Greek. So, posting chinese characters here won't work unless you do it as an image. it just shows up as question marks if you try and do it as text.

Anyways.... in my typical fashion of "jack of all trades, master of none"... I do have an inherent interest in how any language works and trivia thereabout. I do not, however, have any interest in putting in the copious quantities of time and effort necessary to actually learn a second language to a conversational level. Too time consuming for something which is absolutely not a priority practically or personally.

Besides, this is the 21st century and we have wonderful things like BabelFish, so who needs to actually know another language when a computer cah translate it for you (albeit far from perfect)?

That said, I do, somewhat out of family heritage and also out of having taken it for a year in High School, do know the general mechanics of Italian Grammar and some basic vocabulary. Understanding text is easy enough with the assistance of an Italian-English dictionary, although hearing it spoken I can only pick up little bits and pieces.

Oher personal interests have led me to try and dabble a bit in Japanese although the alphabets are a significant obstacle to understanding any text not presented in "Romanji". And spoken, ugh, forget it. even more ridiculously rapid and unitelligiable than Italian, with too much importance on intonation. The subtleties which make a huge difference in meaning are just impossible to pick up for me, having grown up speaking a language where it makes no difference and thus your ears simply aren't trained to be that sensitive to such things.

Beyond that, my knowledge is purely of a trivial nature.
