I looked at the SGU trailers and decided not to watch it.  Mickey Mouse cartoons are more entertaining.

I think I would like it better if I stopped thinking of it as Stargate.

One of the interesting things about the original Stargate series was how the characters interacted.  Jack, Sam, Daniel, and Teal'c  all interacted with each other in interesting, and sometimes unusual, ways.  But it was always a positive thing and fun to watch.

The characters on SGU are plotting against each other, spying on each other, don't trust each other.  Some of them seem to be rather nasty and self-centered.    It's difficult to like them.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

It's basically going nowhere fast and it's the same ol' same ol' every episode.  The characters are one-dimensional, uninteresting and all of them are the same character copied over and over again.  That and SGU extremely boring.  I had high hopes for this series when I first viewed the trailers for it because I enjoyed SG-1 and SG-Atlantis, but was highly disappointed with SGU right off the bat.  IMO, SGU pales in comparrison to first two Stargate series.

But, as Blade says, they are one dimensional and uninteresting.   Unless you count snarking at each other as interesting.

On a totally different note (sorry!), Doctor Who started up again with its Easter Special yesterday.

Most of you have probably heard of Doctor Who, the British campy science fiction show that started waaay back in 1963, and has the honour of being the most long running sci-fi series of all time.

Yesterdays episode was of particular importance because it introduced the brand new titular character, the Doctor, played by the brand new Matt Smith. Over the years, the titular character has been played by eleven different actors, with the transition between actors an integral part of the plot. Each actor represents the same "being"; even though they all have different personalities, mindsets, opinions, etc etc (this is addressed specifically many times).

Anyway, not only is there a new actor, but also a new head writer and producer. The series was very successfully rebooted back to life in 2005 by Russell T. Davis (of Queer as Folk fame), who has just passed on the bat to Steven Moffat; who promises a newer, darker, approach.

The first episode last night was..pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised, especially after being so disappointed by the last season's four special-episodes. Anyone else watch it?

This is the SciFi TV thread so Dr Who Talk qualifies.

These only being broadcast in the UK? I see no sign of them on BBC america.

That being said I enjoyed The End of Time and The Waters of Mars specials

It was broadcast in Canada, but I was watching something else.  Dr. Who has always struck me as rather a sophomoric version of HHTG.

I just saw the new Doctor Who tonight and wasn't real impressed even though I usually like Stephen Moffat's stories. Out of the new series I think I've really only liked David Tennant's incarnation of the Doctor. The new TARDIS looked kind of cool though in the brief shots at the end.

Still not liking Stargate, huh? 3.gif I thought you would have liked that one! They weren't all bickering at each other, at least. And Young seems to be at least trying to make an effort to patch things up with Rush.

Yes, he was trying.  and then he reminded the civilians that they are basically prisoners and subject to whatever conditions he dreams up.

I do think that one guy's faith in the magical aliens was a bit over the top but I can understand wanting to stay on that planet.  Granted there weren't enough of them to form a sustainable colony but it looked like a much healthier place to be than the ship.

But Young wanted them back.  Why?  So they can complete the mission?  What mission?   They only reason they are there is because Rush is deranged enough to enter an address that goes who knows where.

I think the whole lack-of-control issue is one thing that bothers me.    The ship does what it wants when it wants and the people on board are stuck between two crazy people who are playing king of the hill and don't mind stepping on people in the process.

Young needed them back because he needs as many crew as possible to survive, also people like Teejay ((?) the military doctor) was needed because she has a job to look after other people.

For an ancient ship that had lasted that many years the shields and weapons are crap. And the guy's faith in these aliens were ridiculous. The last episode seemed too much of a filler episode.

Dr Who.

I like the first episode (though I though the aliens were crap, seriously crystal spaceships with huge eyeballs), the 2nd episode was the best out of the three so far. The last episode looked to be good in the trailer but it felt like it was leading up to something, which never came. The Daleks should always have big episodes, because they are the only enemy the doctor has any trouble against. This one was like they came they changed colour, they went.

The using human emotions to deactivate the bomb was ridiculous and stupid. The planes flying in "anti gravity" bubbles was stupid as well as they were propeller planes but's there's no air in space. And they suddenly had laser like weapons.

Yes well the weeping angels next week looks infinitely better. it's a shame Russell T Davies has gone though because his episodes were worse than Stephen Moffat's but was better than last week, so when SM got a chance the episodes were brilliant.

Where did the St John Ambulance (?) sticker come from on the Tardis door, it hasn't been there in the whole 2005 (?) series.

I can't shake the impression that SG: Universe is just flailing about, without a solid idea of how to treat its premise of a basically helpless human crew left to their own devices aboard this ship. Their need to survive using what they brought with them in the evacuation and what they can scrounge from the ship and the places it visits isn't treated as something that is particularly urgent, and the drama between all the forgettable members of the crew just drags on and on. The show has had convincing moments, but only when there was a situation with some actual pressure (eg. the episode Time, with everyone's potential deaths) instead of a focus on crew bickering. It'd be a better show if the crew were in real danger more often. Maybe get some Daleks to chase them around Destiny or something.

Another check mark on the 'Spotting dr. Rush' bingo card: he's in the Bond movie The World is not Enough as the main bad guy, with a very very bad Russian accent.

I watched the Riverworld event the other day. ( this was the 2010 versioneven though the date said 2003 on the  DVR

Many libertys were taken with the story. like the main charator in this was not IN the books.

I found it hard to belive The  Methos Richard Burton charactor as the bad guy

when the books had him as  one of the main good guys. Other wise it was pretty lame.

As for Dr Who i cant belive they changed the theme song.
