Watched Outlander on the Space channel. Very strange SF monster flick.

The Space channel up here in the frozen north is advertising a 12 days of spacemas starting on the 22nd (tomorrow) including a Dr. Who Christmas special on Sunday. Several marathons when you can watch a whole series on a given day.

Starting at 1900 EST tomorrow they are running Thor, Mighty Thor, Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman & Robin, all of which goes to 0905 Friday. Somehow, I know I won't stay up for this.

Jurassic Park trilogy running Friday starting at 1255.

Excellent. They ran a marathon earlier and I somehow missed 2 of the episodes. Glad to have a chance to catch them.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Well, I retrieved my sister's Christmas package from the post office today and what a surprise! All of the original episodes of Star Trek plus a copy of the newer Star Trek prequel (when Kirk met everyone else). A legacy from the library of my recently deceased brother-in-law. Hadn't seen that, so I watched it today.

Gene Roddenberry will be flipping in his grave. There is poetic license then there is movie madness.

The destruction of Vulcan with the death of Spock's mother disturbed me because subsequent episodes of the series show her alive and kicking on Vulcan. The excuse is that this is an alternate time line is pretty thin, and they most certainly violates the Prime Time Directive when Spock the elder gives advice to Spock the very much younger. The Vulcans also lack intensity, and the Romulans are just plain crazy. Stealing scenes from Star Wars was also not a good thing. Neat monsters on the ice planet though, but who is there to rescue our marooned Kirk Jr. but the very elderly Spock who just happened to survive a fall into a black hole (good grief, and in eleven dimensions too). There also to run into Montgomery Scott. What?! a coincidence. Very thin plot acceleration. Sigh! Heck, we even find out what happened to Christopher Pike.

A nice piece of entertainment, but really takes a few too many liberties for my taste. Far too many accidental meetings with various series regulars in younger incarnations. Could have been a lot better with a more interesting plot.

There is a three or four disk set on Klingons that is next on my list. Remember Klingons in the early Trek? Looked like regular humans in funny makeup as opposed to Mr. Worf. Most notable in 'The Trouble with Tribbles'. Must have got their ugly pills later on.

Well, I just watched Episode 1 of Enterprise, and the Klingons were of the new style. When it comes to inimical aliens, my pick of all I have seen on the ST series is the enhanced Suliban. They are racially mad.

The only Romulan you see in the alternate universe was the last of his kind. The Romulan Star Empire does not adhere to Federation laws so the original Spock had to lend a hand to this vastly change alternate universe to make sure to sort things out despite the circumstances.

Just finished viewing the Klingon fan pack (4 DVDs). It consists of episodes from all five ST series from Enterprise to Voyager. In included the Trouble with Tribbles from the original series and wonder of wonders, an episode of DS9 I had never seen where whee the Defiant gets tossed into the middle of the Trouble with Tribbles. Seeing the DS9 promenade coated with tribbles sent me into fits of uncontrollable laughter. In that episode, Worf is asked to explain the metamorphosis of the Klingons but all he said was "Its a long story".

The other notable episodes were the three having to do with the House of Mog from dishonor to reinstatement.

Oh yes, there was an animated series for Star Trek. It introduced the Recreation Room as a basic Holodeck. It is deuterocanon though I consider Enterprise that way as well.

The third disk in my set has The Menagerie, both parts back to back. I'll watch it tomorrow. This is a funny set of disks, supposed to be complete but the order is funny, and I still haven't found the pilot episode. To get them to run properly I have to copy them onto my HDD as ISO files, then run them from there. Must have to do with the age of the production. The player I have to use is like a Swiss army knife for all media. The default player on Linux can't find the main menu.

If i recall The Menagerie was the last episode of season 1, the original pilot was called The Cage, and was The Menagerie in an extended form but Pike was Captain not Kirk.

the Official Pilot was "Where no man has gone before".

The list of contributing writers to this show was impressive

Theodore Sturgeon

Harlen Ellison

Robert Bloch

you didn't miss much with the animated series

even with Larry Niven writing some of the episodes ( one anyway}

The novelized books were much better then the animated show ever was.

Alan Dead Fosters Star Trek Logs 1-10.

Y'know, everyone loves Ewoks and Tribbles. One of the novel series I would like to see made into a movie is Little Fuzzy by H. Beam Piper, along with the sequel, Fuzzy Sapiens. It has almost as good a plot as Avatar complete with evil exploiters and downtrodden natives.

Another Piper series that could be brought to television is the Paratime stories. Alternate-universe police procedural with all kinds of opportunities for various levels of civilization.

With the CGI we have today, this shouldn't be too difficult to carry it off.

As dated and goofy as the animated Star Trek was, it did give us yet more silly fun with "genetically re-engineered" tribbles, and CBS has been kind enough to provide the remastered episodes freely online:

Star Trek: The Animated Series - Episode 5

"More Tribbles, More Troubles"

It's like the Scooby Gang in Space! Your Tribble Saga is now complete.

Meanwhile, several episodes of Season 4 of "Star Trek: Enterprise" explain the changing looks of the Klingons. Wiki tells us to watch episodes 80, 81, 82, 91, and 92...wow, did the series really have that many episodes?!

___

One day, I would love to see Isaac Asimov's Robot Detective and Foundation series on either the big screen or even television. Seeing the arcologies of "Caves of Steel" and the mighty world of Trantor would be a sci-fi urbanist's dreams come true, and for once we might even replace "space opera" with science fiction.

Thanks for the references. My walk though this library hasn't reached Season 4, so I'll look forward to that.

The video reference returns "cannot run this in your country" nonsense, so it is not freely available. Cheap illegitimi.

Please remember that sci-fi is the plural of scum-fum. If you must abbreviate please use SF.

I agree that the Asimov literature would look good on the screen, but if that travesty called "I Robot" is any example of the screw up that Hollywood would make of it, I suspect the estate of the good doctor will tell them to go to an improbable place.

I was looking for BBC America but decided I am fine with watching BBC OnDemand or renting DVD's of old episodes if I find any series I want to catch up on.

EDIT: OK, I just saw the season finale of Being Human on demand. Wow! Just wow!
