PETA Killed 95 Percent of Adoptable Pets in its Care During 2008

Hypocritical Animal Rights Group’s 2008 Disclosures Bring Pet Death Toll To 21,339

WASHINGTON DC – Today the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) published documents online showing that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) killed 95 percent of the adoptable pets in its care during 2008. Despite years of public outrage over its euthanasia program, the animal rights group kills an average of 5.8 pets every day at its Norfolk, VA headquarters.

According to public records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA killed 2,124 pets last year and placed only seven in adoptive homes. Since 1998, a total of 21,339 dogs and cats have died at the hands of PETA workers.

Despite having a $32 million budget, PETA does not operate an adoption shelter. PETA employees make no discernible effort to find homes for the thousands of pets they kill every year. Last year, the Center for Consumer Freedom petitioned Virginia’s State Veterinarian to reclassify PETA as a slaughterhouse.

CCF Research Director David Martosko said: “PETA hasn’t slowed down its hypocritical killing machine one bit, but it keeps browbeating the rest of society with a phony ‘animal rights’ message. What about the rights of the thousands of dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens that die in PETA’s headquarters building?”

Martosko added: “Since killing pets is A-OK with PETA, why should anyone listen to their demands about eating meat, using lab rats for medical research, or taking children to the circus?”

CCF obtained PETA’s “Animal Record” filings since 1998 from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Members of the public can see these documents at www.PetaKillsAnimals.com.

In addition to exposing PETA’s hypocritical record of killing defenseless animals, the Center for Consumer Freedom has publicized the animal rights group’s ties to violent activists, and shed light on its aggressive message-marketing to children.quote>

I have never liked PETA and this is a perfect example of the hypocrisy they peddle.

Center for Consumer Freedom?

Sounds like thier as one sided as PETA is.

Not that i support PETA in any way but the total oppopsite view is not right either. there too many instances of them just having no clue, were are they when dog fighting rings are found? or like here at least once a year you hear about some hosre boarding facilty that allows the animals to starve and live in filth, places that have liciences to operate as such but none of them are ever inspected.

The problem is pet over population and owners that do not get them fixed. There is something PETA could do to help with the problem, push legislation the would require pet stores to only sell pets that couldnt reproduce.

    The facts are correct however,

    Figure breakdown

From July 1998 through December 2008, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) killed over 25,112 dogs, cats, and other "companion animals." That's more than five defenseless creatures every day. PETA has a walk-in freezer to store the dead bodies, and contracts with a Virginia Beach company to cremate them.

Not counting the pets PETA spayed and neutered, the group put to death over 90 percent of the animals it took in during the last five years. And its angel-of-death pattern shows no sign of changing.

Year Received Adopted Killed Transferred % Killed % Adopted
    2008 2,216 7 2,124 34 95.8 0.32
    2007 1,997 17 1,815 35 90.9 0.85

My weekend and holiday job as a youngster over 20 years ago ,was at a local cats and dogs home in England .It was horrible , i love animals .

I believe they destroy unwanted pets to make way for next weeks new arrivals ,in some cases or this how they used to justify it .

I do believe they would just become completely over run . Sometimes my old boss would bump an unwanted pet the day of its arrival , he was judge, jury and executioner .

Peta disgusts me in general, this just adds to it. I believe that one day one of these idiots will break into some lab that has monkeys with horrible diseases, let them loose in the major city where the lab is, because naturally that is the habitat of the monkey isn't it? And an epidemic will ensue.

lmao, PETA is so stupid. After all, anyone who uses Pamela Anderson as a role-model really needs to have their mental capacity examined.

Oh, yeah... gotta weigh in on this one.

PETA is a joke, a refuge for the mentally handicapped who believe animals are more important than people. Does anyone here remember their billboards that said milk was murder, and we should drink beer instead? I mean, they rail against milk!

Their #1 enemy is common sense. Their use of Pammie as a spokesperson makes one wonder if they are into protecting the health of STD microbes as well. Their ongoing campaign against KFC has gone nowhere, their tirades against McDonalds haven't hurt the fast food chain one bit. It's just another organization that makes a few on the lunatic fringe feel like they're doing something, but the truth is they're as useless as a screen door on a submarine.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

I've seen a few posters about that. With a blood-stained Colonel Sanders stabbing chickens. Quite amusing, actually.

Apparently, they want the chickens treated more humanely. Because a bird that's going to be killed soon anyway really needs to be kept in pristine quarters, or something. Clucking insanity. 21.gif

SimHoTToDDy said it best, say what you want about the place where the info was found, but the facts still stand. This is disgusting on multiple levels, and Peta should be sued for animal abuse. Honestly I hope Animal planet gets into a war with them 3.gif

Ahhh PETA. We meet again. Why is it that this comes as no surprise?

Seriously, this group has done more damage to itself than good.

And their founder is just plain nuts. Have a look at her will:

    Just. Plain. Crazy.

It's not the fact that they want to speak out against the way animals like pigs and chickens are kept, which usually isn't particularly appetizing, that makes the likes of PETA look insane but the nutty and manipulative tactics they use. Things like that blood-stained Colonel Sanders you mention, or the posters about 'the holocaust on your plate', might get some attention for a second, but they're not going to make anyone appreciate their cause. 14.gif

PETA should really stand for People Euthanizing Treatable Animals. I can't stand them.

HOLY CRAP... that lady scares the living bejeezus out of me.

    . That the "meat" of my body, or a portion thereof, be used for a human barbecue, to remind the world that the meat of a corpse is all flesh, regardless of whether it comes from a human being or another animal, and that flesh foods are not needed;

    b. That my skin, or a portion thereof, be removed and made into leather products, such as purses, to remind the world that human skin and the skin of other animals is the same and that neither is "fabric" nor needed, and that some skin be tacked up outside the Indian Leather Fair each year to serve as a reminder of the government's need to abate the suffering of Indian bullocks who, after a life of extreme and involuntary servitude, as I have seen firsthand, are exported all over the world in this form;quote>

Dear God, that is just...... beyond words.

The real shame here is the enormous waste of potentially beneficial resources. With clear, level headed and responsible leadership this group could do so much good, as it is whatever good they manage to do is easily overshadowed by their absurd displays of inexplicable zealotry.

At least we have the Humane Society and the ASPCA to try and do things that make sense (but they could do so much more with the resources of PETA at their disposal).

Unfortunately PETA is unable to find a home for most of these animals, nor are they able to care for them all. The sad reality is that these animals have no-one to take responsibility for them, so they have to be put down. Its not hypocritical on PETA's behalf, they just have no other option.

Every time I hear PETA it reminds me of their tofu eating lion in the year 3000 3.gif

Seriously, I can't take PETA seriously, but something does have to be done about these animals. Its not like they can all just be held in cages waiting for someone to come along and adopt them. I would think and hope that these animals are being put to death in the most humane and painless way possible.

The best part is that people are so scared of these crackheads they actually will listen to some of their warnings.

remember when the NBA changed from the traditional leather ball to a artificial one for a few months? The players HATED it. And it was all because of pressure from PETA. I can't stand an organization that tries to make people feel guilty for doing what they are naturally supposed to. To
