And, did the water test prove the point?

The water didn't go much of anywhere since we only poured a little. And you could tell from the slope of the ground that the painted line was imprecise. :D

On a more recent note, I was in Montreal this past weekend. As part of the ongoing student strike, supporters are wearing red felt squares pinned to their shirts. Of course, "red square" and "Quebec" combined remind me of something else entirely...

Me aboard the #1 north to Penn Station on a late Saturday afternoon, and my first New York City subway hobo:

odainsubwayhobo.jpg

Err, to be clear, I am the one on the left with the gift bag. In truth, I was actually yawning at the time after a whirlwind tourist stint through downtown and was completely oblivious of the unconscious and drooling state of my seatmate, but leave it to travelling companions with cameras to capture that perfect, Hallmark moment.

I regret we all neglected to get a picture of our cool chauffeur, who was the spitting image of a slick, shady, yakuza driver. Our first in-depth interaction with real live New Yorkers was with a yakuza!

Here is a picture of me in front of Lake Louise, Alberta from my student exchange trip in June. I can post more pictures from the trip if anybody wants to see them.

I keep my hair short... if it gets long enough to touch my ears, it drives me bonkers. (Or, more bonkers than I already am...)

Shortest highway in the world. Both ends are labelled Mile 0. Some bureaucrab clearly got it wrong.

Heh. Don't Victoria, BC and St. Johns, NF both claim to have "Mile 0" on the Trans-Canada Highway? :D

At least the other end of US 1 in Fort Kent, ME (2,377 miles up the road - not too shabby) only claims to be the end of the route, not "mile 0".

Well, it depends on which direction you are travelling. That means the highway ends somewhere around Winnipeg. And the proper abbreviation for out easternmost province is NL (Newfoundland and Labrador).

I reckon you could fit four more legs in those shorts. :P

Yes, well, you have a demonstration of what wind can do to loose clothing there. :P

Not really. For the sake of consistency highways always have their distance measured in one direction only. Typically the standard is that mile (or km) 0 is at the southern or western end of the road.. Thus, Victoria's claim is the legitimate one for the TCH.

In Canada, highways are provincial, not federal, so the Trans Canada has a mile 0 in every province. In Ontario, it is at the Quebec border. Since that end is more populous, the highway's mileage runs contrary to the rest of the province. Having four digit exit numbers in Ottawa would probably be annoying.

The Trans-Canada's designation is mainly symbolic. Ontario no longer recognizes it. The Trans-Canada is unmarked here.

I think mileage actually goes in both directions here. I recall the numbers going up as I went to Winnipeg from the east, but then also going up as I went east back into Ontario? But the highway is divided and both sides have different paths so that might be why. Also I went back overnight so I might not be remembering correctly. I was also on a bus.

Good point. The feds downloaded all the highways to the provinces some time ago, and the provinces downloaded them onto the municipalities with much screaming of foul.

In Innisfil, near Barrie, Queen's Highway 11 (Yonge Street) is now known as Innisfil No. 4. You had really better know where you are going.

The Trans-Canada has changed to The MacDonald-Cartier freeway from the Quebec border to Toronto, goes north from there on Highway 400 and at Sudbury turns and becomes Highway 17 to the Manitoba border when it becomes Highway No. 1. At least that's when I last drove it.
