It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions. Winston made for the stairs. It was no use trying the lift. At present the electric current was cut off for the Hate Week.

    62151205561.jpg

On each landing, opposite the lift shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. Big Brother Is Watching You, the caption beneath it ran.

    62152921101.jpg

Winston entered the room, the telescreen turned on automatically. Telescreen was a Mars device that spied on people on everything. There was no way of shutting it off completely. Currently it was reading out a list of figures about the third five-year plan.

    62152138407.jpg

Outside, even through the shut window pane, the world looked cold. The black-mustachio’d face of the poster gazed down from every commanding corner. In the far distance a helicopter skimmed down between the roofs, it was the Police Patrol, snooping into people’s windows.

    62153466377.jpg

The patrol did not matter, however, only the Thought Police mattered. The Thought Police spied on everybody anytime everywhere. The Martian with heretical thought would be arrested secretly at night and be vaporized immeidately, like he’d never existed. There was no court in Mars, nor a trial needed, because there is no law in Mars.

    62154522146.jpg

The Ministry of Truth----Minitrue, in Marspeak----where Winston was working, was startlingly different from any other object in sight. It was an enormous pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete, soaring up, terrace after terrace, three hundred meters into the air.>3.gif>

Three slogans of the Mars stood out in bold capitals:>3.gif>

    WAR IS PEACE>3.gif>

    FREEDOM IS SLAVERY>3.gif>

    IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH>3.gif>

My God! How did you get your city grown up so well? My Mars cities are all still very small (under 100,000).

This is beautiful, Qin. Dark and threatening - and you write very well.

I am frightened to see what happens next!

While it is somewhat chilling, you write well. Your Martian city is nice, as is your Big Brother poster (well, not nice, but you know what I mean 2.gif).

Is this supposed to be an alternate timeline to 1984 in which that variety of totalitarian rule arose on Mars in the future? Interesting. I will be watching this.

There were just three other buildings of similar appearance and size dwarfing the surrounding architecture. They were the homes of the four Ministries between which the entire apparatus of government was divided:>3.gif>

The Ministry of Truth: which concerned itself with news, entertainment, education, and the fine arts;>3.gif>

The Ministry of Peace, which concerned itself with war;>3.gif>

The Ministry of Love, which maintained law and order;>3.gif>

The Ministry of Plenty, which was responsible for economic affairs.

Their names, in Marspeak: Minitrue, Minipax, Miniluv, and Miniplenty.

    71948604255.jpg

The Ministry of Love was the really frightening one. There were no windows in it at all. Winston never was inside, nor within half a kilometer of it. It was a place impossible to enter except on official business, and to arrive only by helicopters.

    71948527186.jpg

The Ministry of Truth issued Times. It was a magazine bragged about the triumphs of Big Brother and the Mars. Winston worked in Record Department. His job was to rectify the numbers and announcements. For instance, if Big Brother predicted the production of oxygen would be tripled in one year, but actually only doubled, then Winston was to change triple to double

    72048742120.jpg

And his colleagues would recover all the issues, change the figures, and reissue them. The slogan of Minitrue was:

    Who controls the past controls the future;

Who controls the present controls the past.

    71950292381.jpg

    About Marspeak >3.gif>

Marspeak is a beautiful language. It’s a destruction of words. There are too many verbs and adjectives in earth language, which would be get rid of in Marspeak by means of synonyms and antonyms.

    72053672329.jpg

Take “good” for instance. If you have a word like “good”, what need is there for a word like “bad”? “ungood” will do just as well. And why do we need “excellent” and “splendid”? “plusgood” will do, or “doubleplusgood” if you want something stronger still.

    7.jpg

The whole aim of Marspeak was to narrow the range of thought. In the end it shall make thought crime literally impossible, because there would be no words to express it. The educational function of Ministry of Truth was to teach Marspeak to earthlings, and totally demolish earth language.

    72021804289.jpg

Yes, there are earthlings in Mars, but they are not considered human beings.

    Great CJ.

Plato would like to have his Utopia set on Mars. Should I post my Mars CJ here too?

The Martian claimed, of course, to have liberated the earthlings from bondage. Before the Great Immigration(from Earth to Mars) they had been hideously oppressed by the capitalists, they had been starved and flogged, women had been forced to work in coal mines (women now work in the oxygen mines, as a matter of fact), children had been sold into the factories at the age of six.

    82138144450.jpg

(Earthlings)They were born, they grew up in the meter crater, they went to work at twelve, they passed through a brief blossoming period of beauty and sexual desire, they married at twenty, they were middle-aged at thirty, they died, for the most part, at fifty. Heavy physical work, petty quarrels with neighbors, films, football, beer, and lottery filled up the horizon of their minds.

    82139457450.jpg

To keep earthlings in control was not difficult. A few agents of the Thought Police would do the job. They eliminated the few individuals who might be dangerous. The earthlings did not have strong political feelings. They only knew to be loyal to Big Brother unconditionally.

    82141846394.jpg

There was a vast amount of criminality in earthling swamp, a whole world of thieves, bandits, prostitutes, drug peddlers. But since it all happened among the earthlings themselves, it was of no importance. As the Mars slogan put it: “earthlings and animals are free.”

I love the distopian essence of it all.  1984 is a great novel to base a CJ off of.

Oh, wow! This is truly intigruing, great idea of putting '1984' to Mars and alternate it, it truly is like an alternate timeline. Surprisingly (well, not really... ) with many parallels to our lives, so it's very up to date, too. Great city- building, btw, I really like it. Especially the breeding- dome (what a frightening word I just created, but very suitable) looks good with the area surrounding it. Looking very much forward to more,

    lucky7

Interesting. I have apparently got a message from Big Brother saying that this is not the future. Well, if not the future, then an alternate timeline to 1984.

    As Minitrue says:

    Who controls the past controls the future;

Who controls the present controls the past

I love Orwel's 1984 and this is a refreshing CJ.

You've nicely altered original story into Mars setting, keep up the good work.

The smallest cell of the Mars was a family. Winston was married. Her wife was named Catharine, but he hadn’t seen her for eleven years. She’s not dead, and they were not divorced either. Martians don’t divorce, only separate. They separated because they don’t bear children.

    102024861143.jpg

The only recognized purpose of marriage in Mars was to beget children for the service of Mars. Marriage must be approved by government, but permission was always refused if the couple concerned gave the impression of being physically attracted to one another. Sexual intercourse was to be looked on as a disgusting minor operation. Katherine, as a typical Martian woman, hated to do it, but she did it obediently every night with Winston. She would call it “our duty to the Mars”.

    102026545423.jpg

But this was never put into plain words. It was in an indirect way of rubbed into every Martian from childhood onwards. There was even organizations such as the Junior Anti-Sex League which advocated complete celibacy for both sexes.

    102027237531.jpg

Martian was forbidden to consort with prostitutes, but it was not a life-and-death matter. The poor quarters swarmed with earth women who were ready to sell themselves to Martians. Tacitly the Mars was inclined to encourage prostitution, as an outlet for instincts which could not be altogether suppressed. Also distorted or suppressed sex life made Martian a hysterical worship to Big Brother.
