Sim City 5 under construction?

Maxis' Luc Barthelet tells French TV that development on the next virtual metropolis has begun. Maxis won't comment.

According to the Web site for the German magazine PC Games, development on Sim City 5 has begun. The http://www.pcgames.de/index.cfm?article_id=273061>pcgames.de article says Maxis general manager Luc Barthelet recently told a French television show that development started this month on the game. The article also said Electronic Arts was looking for a new mitarbeiter on the project. Since that roughty translates as co-worker, it could mean either EA is looking for another corporate partner in addition to Maxis or new development staff to work on the game.

However, when GameSpot contacted Maxis, they issued a flat no comment. Another source said Barthelet was merely speculating on the Sim City franchise's future and that too much was read into his comments. But, given the popularity of the series, it's not so much a question of if development will begin on Sim City 5, but when.

oh, i remember in one of the chats with Will Wright he said that upcoming projects included SC4 RH, TheSims2 and a game that will blow everything away.  it was under very top secret conditions and it hasn't been supported by the staff yet.  They also said they will unveil it in 2004.  so it could be the next generation of SC.  you never know.

Whoa, whoa whoa everyone!

Cool your jets! The interview excerpt was taken out of context. Luc had been asked if there was ever going to be a fifth version of SimCity, and Luc pointed out that franchises, by definition, grow by releasing successive iterations of the product. There have been four versions of SimCity, and therefore it's very likely that there will one day be a fifth, just as it's one day likely that The Sims 2 will eventually one day be succeeded by The Sims 3.

Please don't read any more into this than just that.

I'm with RaphaelNinja. Saying there's gonna be another Simcity is like saying there's a gonna be another Britney Spears album. As long as people buy it, they will make it.

The difference is the Simcity games continue to improve, whereas, well need I say more. LOL.

On the 8th of january there was already simcity 5 news. EA was looking for an art director for the next generation of SimCity. But it wouldn't be the first time that a games takes 2 or 3 years to complete. Since there was always a 3 or 4 year periode between the SC games it would be normal to start working on one now if it would take 2 or 3 years to finish. I rather have a product where they have put in lots of work than a quick product that has no fun.

I'm not sure that thats such good news anyway. In the most recent chat Will Wright said it takes four years to develop a game. But I am eager to learn about the game that will blow everbody away.

Yeah, right.  Whatever.  RalphaelNinja just proved why I never EVER watch the news anymore.

Although, when you think about it, the Sims 2 was in development for the last four years.
There was an overlap there with the expansions for the original and the next one ...

Simcity 5 already i cant believe it.

“The American city should be a collection of communities where every member has a right to belong. It should be a place where every man feels safe on his streets and in the house of his friends. It should be a place where each individual's dignity and self-respect is strengthened by the respect and affection of his neighbors. It should be a place where each of us can find the satisfaction and warmth which comes from being a member of the community of man. This is what man sought at the dawn of civilization. It is what we seek today.”

I remember hearing a long time ago that the game that will blow everything else away is going to be some kind of outer space and/or moon simulation. I think sid meier was also working with him on it, but im not sure 9.gif

I think the games theme was what it would be like to place a moon colony and develop it into some real big moon colony... and you had to watch out for hazards like radiation, heat, cold, lack of air, power production, and water usage. And maybe even an alien invader defense system, but im not too sure of that. Maybe terraforming?

When the guy said that development started this month, he may have simply meant that a few people are starting to throw ideas around in their heads, but not planning to do anything about it on company time for who-knows-how-long.

If they are thinking about SimCity 5, I hope they think long and hard about a truly new network system, one which isn't dependent on a predeifined set of possible combinations for *each* tile involved. WIDER NETWORKS DON'T HAVE TO BE DIFFICULT!

Maybe they can do what people have been asking for for years, and actually abandon the orthogonal grid. Programmers have always been skeptical of the practicality of this, and so was I (having some programming experience myself) but then I just sat down and thought about it (in the shower, actually) and figured out how it could be done. I outlined the system in a rant somewhere on these forums... I suppose this would be a good topic of discussion on my proposed SimCity page on my website.

well, in retrospect, I think we can all agree with that statement.

Well to tell you the truth patriots_1228...... I think it would be better to have simcity5 than another expansion pack. Why? Well I believe that in order to install the new expansion pack everyone would have to delete ALL plugins and ALLL modds. Notsure if I could see mine go...... But then again, it would have to depend how good the expansion pack is.

Too bad this is an old thread. I really wish it was true.

yes, this is indeed a dead thread - and there already is a thread dedicated to the future of SimCity, so I will shut this one down.
