Meh. Not my picture. I just typed "coins" into Google image search and snagged that.

The pennies in particular are so similar in appearance to American ones that people often don't notice the difference. It's the same color, the same size, the same shape. So yeah, Canadian pennies are always playing the ring in the box of fries when it comes to coins in this country.

Though, given the similarity in value between the two currencies, it ultimately doesn't make much of a difference, anyway. Especially when you're dealing with just pocket change, and especially especially when it's only pennies.

50 cent coin exists, as you see it in the picture. Just pretty uncommon. 4.gif

NMUSpidey: And on the other side of the coin (hah! see what I did there? 3.gif), american coins are pretty freely accepted here. Most stores will take American bills too, they just give a pretty crummy exchange rate for it. 3.gif

Actually its called the 50 cent piece, not coin.  It's legal tender, you can give it to cashiers and stuff which is kinda funny because they have no place to put it.

I bought a roll of 50 50 cent pieces when I went to the Royal Canadian Mint, which cost exactly $25, and had fun with using them here.  The expression some use when you give them this coin is just classic 3.gif.

We also have a quarter that contains colour!

I use dollar coins here in America, and am one of the very few that does so. I bought a role of 25 of them the other day, and they are beautiful! Nobody ever questions my use of them.

We have a lot of new quarters here in the U.S., too, many of them based on different states.

Then there's always the old wheat pennies1.gif

I have to admit that the number of times this topic has wandered off-topic and back again is rather pleasant.

But of course we all know the real reason we are here...

Well, I don't know about spurr change, but I do know that in my small cup of spare change here I found 20 quarters, each one a state's quarter, and I found 4 Hawaiian quarters29.gif

    Oh Wow!

I remember the switch from 4.0 to 5.0 and I remember that it was long yet still exciting to see the new result.

And what's all this talk about coinage for?

Ah... coinage is such a great word, I actually used it on an exam last year!

Well, Dirk mention change and we've been having an outbreak of corny puns lately so the conversation turned to coinage.  So we've been talking about that while waiting to see what Dirk is up to.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

On that note, wouldn't it be awesome if we had hot-dog trees?

Would hot dogs be the fruit? If so, when would they be ripe? Are they edible right from the tree?

I think the sausage would be the seed, and the bun would be the outside of the fruit. They would be harvested during the summer months, with the hot-dog becoming juicier the longer it has grown.

Around here (New York) dollar coins are infamous for the following reason: the vending machines you use to buy/refill Metrocards for the subway or tickets for the commuter rail are incapable of giving change in bills. So, if you go to the machine to buy your $6.50 train ticket and put a $10 bill in, you're going to get three dollar coins and two quarters as change.

I swear, if it weren't for those vending machines the circulation of dollar coins around here wouldn't be even a fraction of what it is. 34.gif

My cousin in particular likes to unload them on homeless people and street performers. 21.gif

Oh well you know what they say...  can't beat 'em..  join 'em...  better take a look at what kind of change you can expect if you take a holiday in the South Pacific.

As you can see we have now done away with 1c 2c & 5c coins.   Notes start at $5.00.

Change is Coming, but in the meantime, keep this in mind.

Including loose coins, toasters, hotdogs, trixie medals, etc.  So please be cautious.  Because it's all in fun--until somebody loses an eye.
