Nice work! I also agree with the somewhat hospitable--boarded up windows tend to look too grim, and unless that's the kind of city you're making, you're stuck.

How do the night lights look? the blue tint might be off because of the gamma settings, but I got as close as I could.

    Brewster_projects_2008_v1_r2_nig-2.jpg?t

    Might export soon...

Anyway, I have a question... I wanted to try to play around with my buildings from max 2009 but I'm having trouble converting them into something 2008 will open. Any tips? I tried exporting a scene from 2009 into a .3ds but 2008 refuses to open that still...

I think it is super cool and you should export it ASAP.

I really like it. Is it low wealth residential?

I am working on low wealth projects and I like to see these simple buildings.

I think it needs a base though. Like a concrete foundation at the bottom.

uh oh. You'll need to do a lot of previewing and pasting into the game to get the color right. First, take a screenshot of the exported model in game, during the night, but without any custom nitelites on it. Then paste that into photoshop, and paste your renders on top of that.

oh, I forgot to say, it looks really good.  You'll just need to edit the windows a little more, since it looks like the bottom part of the lit window is dark.

I don't know if I have said this before. but I really don't like lighting things 3.gif, at least not this project. So, I started something new from the rundown industrial areas of Detroit (its just south of the Packard plant in fact).

    Production_steel_r01-3.jpg?t=1237085943

Still modeling to be done and all textures are not final (plus a few that are not even there yet 3.gif). Although, I really hate the roof texture, so I'm definitely going to do it over again. You get the idea of where this is going though.

The tower is gold, we need as many useful, unobtrusive BAT's like that as possible!

As for the warehouse, I don't actually mind the roof texture. I think the roof may need more roofjunk, though.

    That's awesome!

I've been meaning to start a few Detroit industrial buildings, so maybe I should. It would be great if we could coordinate the release of a handful of them. I've been thinking of a few near the Fisher 21 plant (around Piquette and Beaubien) and a few down on Fort Street near the Ambassador Bridge.

ya, the rood texture looks to pixelated and not natural too. maybe you could try to apply some tar plates to see how it looks like.. 2.gif

Personally, always use the .OBJ format to transfer models from a version of Max to another. In addition, MAX2009 is very powerful for export in this format  and allows multiple things. do a test.

I like the Frederick Douglass building, very convincing. 29.gif

    Thanks everyone!

Nofunk: Wouldn't that be nice? There are some real gems on the shoreline, and the fisher body plant area looks like a lot of fun too (Fisher 21 is one I would love to make someday as well). Street view in google earth and live local have been occupying me for the past few nights 3.gif

Gn_leugim: Yeah, I redid the roof and I think it looks alright now. I was going to try something with tiles or something, but it never really worked. I appreciate the thought though.

Delecto: Ahh, .OBJ how could I forget? Thanks a lot man.

Jason: as a matter of fact I do!

As you can see I had to fake a few things (like the windows and the ridges in the roof) but I like how it came out. This is mostly done, save any sugestions you have about it.

I'll be back to the Frederick Douglass projects shortly.

This looks great. IK like the brick details and the windows. I was going to say the roof looks a tad empty, but you're picture shows the roof really is empty! I think the new roof texture is a lot better. I have to second GN though, I think the lines are a tad strong. Anyway, neat to see one of those really big old style industrial warehouse type buildings.

I think the brick is too yellowish right now, the building's brick is more redish.

Also, I think the roof needs more work. In general I think that plain roofs are fine, but I think this building will need a busier roof texture.

Also, I think the glass texture is too bright. You'll feel compelled to make it brighter so you can see the glass panes, but you really want to keep it darker. For a lot of the windows you may not be able to see the individual panes. But on some of the brighter areas of the texture you will, so that, plus the cultural understanding that these kinds of buildings have those kinds of windows, will make it so that people will read the windows as you want them to.

I finished the warehouse up quite a while ago, so I should see what you think. I don't know if it will work, but I really love how the roof came out. Also adjusted the brick color and windows.

    Production_steel_r01-4.jpg?t=1238733604

Next is progress on the Frederic Douglass projects. I fixed the night lights, and even switched to a truNight view (although it was necessary to kill the export errors 3.gif )

    Brewster_projects_2008_v1_r2_nig-3.jpg?t

But after fixing this and deciding to add some spots here and there, I realized that none of the lights work (it might have to do with a setting in the template simfox sent me, they work fine in a new scene). I spent quite a while picking through settings, but found no solution....

    ...so I made this!

    Concrete_projects_2008_v1.jpg?t=12387339

Nothing like depressing commie textures to cheer me up (see: Irony). Although it was a bit of a joke, I really like how it came out, rusty fences FTW! Might go back and play with those repeated areas, tone them down a tad. Would anyone be interested in this? I was thinking that I would just use it in my CJ, but folks might like it so...

Anyway, the exporting would have been done today, but figuring out truNight's file butchery will take me a bit longer.

    -Todd

Production Steel turned out great! I think the roof looks good, and can't to mod this for ya!

Frederick Douglass Projects are looking good too, although I wonder if the night lights are a tad too yellow? And just when I thought housing projects couldn't get any more depressing, you come out with a concrete block version! (It looks good though.)
