As for the Approval mod idea, I had an idea for how it might possibly work. A second tier of zoning(a fourth zone type in the RCI menu) is created, that of Buildings by Approval. You zone your area R/C/I, then zone BbA over it. You name the lot and then when the factors are right, a developer will approach you with several designs for the building (all on the same density) in a modified version of Lot Editor. You can place any combination of buildings on the lot, and the lot is saved into the development simulator. The cool thing is that the building will grow on your empty lot, but it won't become a ploppable.

BTW, in large US-style subdivisions, cities approve the architect/s, not each design.

Interesting to learn that cities in the U.S. only approves the architects! Does that mean they have free hands to come up with whatever silly construction they can think of - while locals stand beside and can't do nothing about it?

Well, that's not really the whole picture. We have fairly complex zoning laws in the U.S., that are really the purview of each individual state. Legislators seem to come up with all kinds of new zones and laws that change frequently. But in general, yeah, U.S. zoning generally doesn't care much about the style of building. It's all about 'land of the free', and such. One notable exception I can think of off hand is Santa Fe, which has some pretty strict laws on building style and height in it's downtown, which is all adobe! The capital, Washington, has a height restriction as well, so that the Washington Monument is visible from anywhere in town. These are rare laws though.

But for the most part, the U.S. is an ugly clutter of raw individuality. No cohesion. Personally, I think it's a shame. I'm sure that living in strictly zoned areas is also painful though. My friend in Denmark says he needs to get city approval to do any construction on his house, even an interior closet! If the city thinks it's Un-Danish, it won't get approved. Here, if it's not a fire or safety hazard, it's o.k. to build.

Personally, I wish individual cities would come up with their own styles, that zoning was more invasive. There's nothing to be proud about in every town that has identical strip-malls and subdivisions that have no style other than flashy billboards.

Hmm, I had no idea it worked that way!  I fully agree with your views though!  Where I live the city council has a special office that approves new constructions in the city, and whether their decisions are good or bad, all of them can be taken to a court for further actions if necessary!

All new constructions must also be presented to the locals somehow, either in the news paper or by a presentation in a library or similar, giving locals a chance to learn about the project and - if necessary - make complaints before the decisison is being made and the construction itself can start.  There are very strict rules about how a building must look.  It may stick out, but it must also follow the architectural tone given at the surroundings where the new construction is about to be built.

But yeah, I' hold on to my thoughts about having the ability to rule over this important issue in the game <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/1.gif>

I certainly have!  Would be difficult to keep up with the maintenance otherwise <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/1.gif>

How about some overview images of the central/western part of the city?  Below I have 4 images posted, all of them showing these parts from each 4 directions.

    Enjoy! <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/1.gif>

Could you please post us some more upclose screenshots of the 5 greenish towers that can be seen on the ridge in front of the two Van Brienenoord-style bridges on the south-to-north picture? (bottom of the picture)
    They look really neat! 3.gif

What do ya think? I'm just getting started so it's very rough yet but I just wanted an early impression of what I am trying to do. Not near as impressive as what others have going but....hopefully it's on the right track. It will look better once I get the lots made that I need to1.gif

it looks nice. i'm glad someone at simtropolis is using oppie's canal from simcitycentral. in my opinion, if your using plazas next to the canals, they should have more objects or flora on them, other than that it looks good.
this is something i did in about 2 minutes with the canals:

Regarding the zoning mod, appearantly its a pretty complex area and appearantly the mod squad decided adding additional zoning categories is not a possibility.  The only options really available are the controls with the 3 different zoning levels and with the 4 different building styles.  If someone wants to set down and redefine each building to fit properly for the styles and levels of your city then you can have some control, but never a choice of individual buildings.  That will have to wait for SC5, 6 or beyond.  Personally I am fustrated at some of the really tall buildings in the medium zoning level, but it's a pain to fix.

Re zoning law in the US.  It really varies from juridiction to jurisdiction.  Some have very specific zoning styles.  Most don't and we get a lot of inconsistant garbage.  Also in the US its almost exclusively private business that decides what gets built as they are spending their money, as the government has very limited role in economic activity. Usually zoning laws limit things like height, density, use type, mandate the number of parking spots, safety provisions etc.  The code usually says what can't be built, but rarely has much of a positive ideas on what the built enviorment should look like.

[Edit: I am sorry for the comments Drainage I was out of line, anyway wecome.  [Removed inappropriate comments]]  The waterfalls are lots. Look in the LEX.  In particular check out Pegasus'  Pond Kit, Stream Kit, add ons, etc., etc.

I'm sorry but I had to remove them all due to space issues.  A new set of images will be available in a few days showing the entire city in all its glory - however, on another location and presented under its real city name!

Yes, I've been hiding some information for you.  The initial intention was to show a way to build canals without the need of mods or lots - something that would help people with SC4 Vanilla only.  Well, the threads started growing, and in order to avoid other issues, I decided to present these city images under the pseudo Agra City!

The real city name is Olympia - and it's possible that some of you may already know where to look for the updated images <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/1.gif><ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif>

You can get that house by downloading the CSX Villa La Casa Scencilla ... the house data is in the zip ... this was one of the first buildings that Cyccledog did for SC4 and the second one to be released by us ... the first one was the CSX Guesthouse - O'Lantern

This was truely pioneering work for SC4 add in developing.

Drainage you are off subject, out of place, and your quotes are meaningless dribble. The waterfalls are lots. Look in the LEX. In particular check out Pegasus' Pond Kit, Stream Kit, add ons, etc., etc. And read the post first, this question has already been answered a couple of times in this very topic.

Sorry, I didn't realize some people on this board were so rude and offensive. I was only asking a community for some advice and help, I had no idea some people would be so offended by someone asking a question, it seems that I'm obviously a piece of dirt to you. I apologize in advance for my nature and philosophy, you are obviously a far superior being to me what with your amazing ability to be rude. I had actually already read the earlier posts, but did not understand the references to LEX files etc, it seems not all of us are born with a god like understanding of references to everything on this earth. I apologize for my ignorance and slow wittedness on a website I had never visited before.

Agra, however, I congratulate you. You truly do seem to know your stuff, I just hope that once I start building bigger cities they'll live up to the standards you've set!

    Cheers,

    -Me.

    Heya Drainage, 9.gif

Let me be the first to apologize for the less than welcoming way in which you've been received by some members.  Occassionally, in a community this size, it can be difficult to know who has not had the benefit of being around long enough to get into the groove of things.

The members do not mean to discomfit you, occassionally, frustrations can occur when commoners feel certain topics should be fairly obvious to anyone -- which certainly is not the case.

The desire for high efficiency by which information is processed here can leave the newly initated in the dust, some times!  There are many things that are beyond me, finding it impossible to be on top of all developments at all times, so my sympathies <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/9.gif>  ...

Don't let em get you too discouraged, they really are a good lot... most of em <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/2.gif>
