Oh thank god for that. I didn't think he'd actually submit nominations like that for real, but then again, it's Craig we're talking about here… so you never know do you? 3.gif

'Member with the most superfluous numbers at the end of their username'... I'd thought you'd come up with some parrot humor related thing. Like the 'Smart ass parrot' award or something, everyone just ignores the numbers.

Love hal's though, that joke's gonna be with you forever now. 21.gif

I really wouldn't put it past him, I wouldn't be surprised at all if some of them were word for word real nominations 3.gif

I might just have to go back to playing Fallout 3 for another straight week (or two) before these results come out!

That's because they're superfluous.

I nominate you for the Prestigious Most likely to be seriously injured in a Monty Python sketch award*

Originally posted by: hym But you see, the first two pictures were normalized as being the base unit of function.  You added another picture of Viggo, but not one of Cloud Strife, so you've taken the original work equation of W=(X+Y), and transformed it into W=(2X+Y).  You need to add another picture of Cloud Strife to raise the Y value of the function.  Once you do, the function can be rebalanced and written as W=2(X+Y), which shows the proper multiplicative constant.quote>

On what exactly are you basing your assumption that Cloud and Viggo are separate variables that need multiplicative constancy?

I daresay it would prbably work more along the lines that each picture of either has an inherent capacity for motivation, which we shall say is measured in Work Motivation Units (WMU). The capacity is dependent on the size and sexiness of the image, though depending on the mood of the viewer, each may be taken with varying levels of efficiency.

Also, it is likely that as more and more pictures are posted, each has gradually decreasing returns. We can perhaps measure the total effect with the following function:

P = log(Σ(ME)-1)

where:

P = power output (rate at which work gets done)

M = motivation potential from a given image in WMU

E = efficiency at which the motivation is taken from that given image (from 0 to 1)

Still, there are limitations here. It's obvious that returns decrease with increasing quantity but is it logarithmic or is it radical? The following function might fit better:

P = √(Σ(ME))

Even so, these are merely empirical formulae, not theoretical ones. Made obvious by the fact that they are not dimensionally balanced (that is, the units don't work out). The other key flaw is that we're not taking the time interval between postings (and viewings) into account, which certainly matters.

Or maybe the real flaw is that the workings of the human mind are far too complex to model with simple math, have some randomness to them, and therefore we both ought to knock this nerdy nonsense the hell off since it's getting us nowhere. 3.gif

At least I know That I am beneficial, I always thought I was harmful to be around for too long, but you are the nurse and should know better than an engineer like me. Though I might have to watch out for people trying to add me to their tea, soup, or what have you. 3.gif

Well, what can I say... it's not often you (a non-admin) get a chance to mess with about 10 peoples sigs all at once 3.gif (I had no idea so many people were going to use it when I made it for you). I was gonna replace it with the 'We didn't like it, so we removed it, singed admin.' banner, but then I thought I might cause an international incident or something and freak you guys out, so I just decided to switch around the years. Took me about half an hour searching the web-archive to find the 06 banner in VT's sig. 19.gif

Yes one always does have to watch out for the 'what have you'...

Especially when you are dealing with a nurse and an ailment starting with C.

But I had better stop that particular train of thought lest I cause consternation or that other word that rhymes...

OK shutting up now.

Mostly.

Edit:   Cockatoo! I knew it was you!  Well who else could mess with your imagehosting site...  gotta admit that was one of the best site pranks for a while!   Apparently in the good old days dirk pulled a few crackers!    The best was supposed to have been when he changed the whole site to make it look like EA had taken over ST...  but we probably need Duke to tell us about that one.

Somehow, I can't really ever picture you "shutting up."  Definitely not completely.

Unless it's in Schulmania where I crept up on you and overtook your #5 posting spot.

Well, this is exciting!

I just wish I had gotten around to making a submission.

Oh well. Next Year!

Also, A bit off-topic, but, man, this site looks weird in widescreen. Still not used to my new monitor.

Okay, the lesson you should all learn from that is: don't hotlink. Save and reupload.

Not the first time I've seen something like this happen. There was a situation a coupe months back where some blogger discovered a couple people hotlinking his images on their sites and had fun with it in a similar manner, albeit more severe. One of the sites doing the hotlinking was a conservative political article speaking favorably of George Bush. So what did the guy do? He replaced the hotlinked image with an image of Bush dressed as Hitler.

Fortunately for all of you, Parrot boy's substitution was far more of lighthearted prank than a "mwahaha I'll teach those bastards a lesson".

Apparently in the good old days dirk pulled a few crackers!    The best was supposed to have been when he changed the whole site to make it look like EA had taken over ST...  but we probably need Duke to tell us about that one.quote>

As if I'm the only person aroun who remembers it.

Okay, I might be the only person around who has screenshots of it.

Have some tasty copypasta from this thread:

Originally posted by: Duke87 I, out of wise forethought (or OCD hoarding, whichever you prefer) took screenshots.

Unfortunately, this was before I knew better than to save them in JPEG format in MS Paint (or than to use Internet Explorer, for that matter), so they're a bit speckly. Just think of it as an "artistic enhancement".2.gif

Ah yes, that. I kick myself now for saving the screenshots of it in jpeg format, but here they are:

Just a quick update on how it's going . . .

The official count is 1,329 nominations.

There are 355 nominations for Custom Content awards.  There are 616 nominations for CJ awards.  The rest are for the other categories.

Less than 2% of the nominations have failed the "sanity check".    We are only considering CJs and BATs that were posted, uploaded, or updated here during 2008.

There are 190 ad-hoc nominations.   Not all of them will be awarded but some of them definitely will be.

The category with the most nominations (64) is Best City Journal.

Some of the categories have clear winners.  Others, not so much.  We are reading those descriptions that most of you did an good job of writing.

Not surprisingly, Craig made the most nominations (55).   Ilikehotdogsalot was close with 48.

(and only 41 of Craig's were ad-hoc.  3.gif )

Just thought you might like to hear about how it's going.

Last year we voted, though.

I would have nominated more people if this was the only part...

Wow.
