I use to put them into my cities, but lately I haven't put any of them in my city because they take up so much room and I remember reading somewhere that they don't go well near residential areas?

So is there a purpose of cemeteries that I'm not aware of? Thanks.

Residential loves Cemetaries. Commercial could care less either way. Nobody actually is hurt by them. But they are pretty dang good at cleaning the air polution, so you may want to consider that. I always place them in the the biggest air poluted areas of residential and I get the most bang for my real estate. There is a bit of water polution, but you DO get a tiny mayor rating increase for having each one in the city.

will my city building be damaged if i refuse to build one? when i first got back into sc4 i used to always build them as soon as they were requested, but now im far more aware of the importance of managing your empty spaces well, so i just ignore them

No, you don't need to build them. Leaving them out will not hurt anything in your game ever. I personally don't build City Halls in my purely residential cities, because they cost a lot and don't provide anything for residential.

Cemetaries are kinda big, but I usually try to find space for them... and here is why: They are $ FREE, give you the Hearse to drive (and for its missions), give a SERIOUS boost to Residential YIMBY, it gives a substantial polution reduction within 3 tiles of its borders, and I personally like anything that gives a huge radius of mayor rating increase no matter how small it might be. But if you don't care about those things, and can build your city without them, go for it. 4.gif

Its your choice. No harm, but you give up many nice little reward benefits for your 16 tiles of space. Play your game one way (without them), then another city (play with them). You will come up with an opinion on your own for which you prefer. Hope that helps.

EDIT:  If you are curious what the Hearse can do for you... Cemetaries provide you a U-Drive-It Hearse which has missions that can provide you the Military Base and the Houses of Worship (which most people tend to want - because they are TWICE as powerful for residential YIMBY and Mayor Rating increase as the Cemteries are.)

It comes from NIMBY, "NOT in my backyard" (think of people that protest every time something big is proposd for their neighbourhood EG major commercial or transport infrastructure)

cemeteries is one of the things that make your residential demand higher...

and your residents will be happy if one has been build around...

I was working on my city recently and a thing popped up telling me to add another cemetery....but before I could do it, something else popped up telling me to place something else. When I tried to go back to the cemetery thing, I couldn't find it. Where would I look to find a cemetery to build one?? Thanks.

To revive this thread one more time:

If the air is really "red", nothing seems to beat the good old forrest - set a cemetery where trees are standing and watch the clouds roll in!

So the air cleaning ability of this large lot seems to be rather sub par to natural vegetation.

I was rather disappointed yesterday - but the allmighty mayor-god sent me some new trees to plant between the graves. ;)

I like to put two or three near my dirty power sources and landfills. So they do good scrubbing the air for me. But I usually will put one from the rewards near areas that need cleaning. Then I go to the scroll line and plop the same one where it will be ascetically pleasing, so I get double the cemeteries.

It isn't hard to see what cemeteries (or any other lots) do. Just open simcity_1.dat in the Reader, go to the Navigator tool and see the lists. It took me 1½ mins to do this. So:

Cemeteries provide park effect (boosts R desirability) but no landmark effect (which would boost C desirability). So it's basically a park with zero maintenance. Takes up more space than a medium or large park, but again, it's for free, and some 5x5 space can easily be found. Houses of worship provide a park effect too, and in addition they provide some R$$ cap relief as well.

I don't use cemeteries or houses or worship in my cities. I use Japanese shrine/temple BATs instead. While they don't have the same effects, they make more sense for the theme of my region.

With some work you could replace the visual of the houses of warship with your temples - and I would like on too, when you are done! :D

Are you unconsciously putting them there so they are close to the victims of air pollution? They clear pollution but it seems like that is another reason for them there. I put most of mine in my crime filled inner city.

Haha,  I guess you identified another great reason to place it there!

Along the lines of this thread topic, Here are the items in the Park/Landmarks/Rewards Menus that help remove Pollution in order of effectiveness:

Pollution Effect (Radius) Park Name

-22 (4) Country Club

-15 (6) Large Flower Garden

-15 (6) Large Green Park

-15 (3) Cemeteries

-11 (4) Seoul World Cup Stadium

-10 (5) Softball Field

-10 (4) Major League Stadium

-10 (4) Minor League Stadium

-8 (5) Soccer Field

-7 (4) Medium Flower Garden

-7 (4) Medium Green Park

-5 (4) Medium Playground

-5 (3) City Zoo

-3 (2) Ranger Station

-2 (3) Community Garden

-2 (3) Small Green Park

-2 (2) Small Flower Garden

-2 (2) Open Grass Area

-1 (2) Gazebo

-1 (2) Playground

Hope this helps.

No thanks.  There is enough garbage in the game as it is.  Disasters, by the way, are hard coded in the game kernel.

They don't cause much pollution and are good for residential areas.

Actually, the TRUTH is that the 3 cemeteries are some of my favorite reward buildings!  They do take up a little space, but Residential LOVE them, with huge positive effects, and no negative effects (they WANT to live by them)! Commercial and Industrial have no positive and no negative effects to them.. The Air cleaning job they do is a complete extra on top of the residential benefits. There is a tiny little bit of water pollution, and a tiny mayor rating boost with a radius of about a the size of a small city (per cemetery). Add all 3 and that adds up to a fair Mayor Rating boost for free.  The no plop or monthly cost makes up for the fact that there is no demand cap relief or jobs.  But I think someone released a modded graveyard to give it a few low wealth jobs for groundskeeping. I always just assumed that the burial revenues and groundskeeping costs just canceled each other out, so I never cared.  But don't forget the cool little hearst you get to drive when you add a cemetery. The rewards for doing the missions are pretty decent too!  So thats my take on it.

You're welcome. I enjoy the game stats.

Its not for me, but for those who actually dont mind cheating to eliminate Air Pollution, there is this one Air Purifier that has a story to it, so it wouldn't necessarily feel like cheating for some, but you must give it power, water, and a road connection, or it will die and you lose over $5000 to bulldoze and re-plant a new one.  Its from SimGoober, one of the original legends. Lots of dependencies though, but it removes light-to-moderate air pollution for a 50 tile radius.  Link here: https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1968

Enjoy!
