Most Wikipedia articles are okay, usually just about like geography or something like that.

When it comes to politics/religion/science or any other controversial issue, the articles are often pretty biased. It's just not that noticable if you're taking a short glance at the article though.

I wasn't talking about Rickrolling(I actually enjoyed that because of how simple it was and how many times I got people with clever link tricks).

I'm talking the thousands of videos that are setup like different video(using the middle of the video image trick) but turns out to be some crappy conspiracy video from some idiot with windows movie maker and a bunch of poorly edited images.

I wish they would display the stars a video has on the sidebar so I could spot a bad video a little easier.

You need to go on a field trip to *edited and *edited*.

By the time you come back, you will know why the internet is a serious business.

I'm sure a good number of people on this site already know of those other sites, but if somebody's gonna let the cat outta the bag to somebody who doesn't know, I'd rather it doesn't happen here.  Those sites are so not PG13 after all.   ~Zel~

In a nutshell, rickrolling is the practice of providing a link to a video of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" even though the link is ostensibly to something else, like a news article, a funny picture, or whatnot.  Usually it's not too big of an issue (so long as you're not worried about your ego).  However, some of them link to videos that will resize your browser and cause it to bounce around the screen while you try to close it.

Mainly internetisseriousbusiness.com (don't go there if don't want your browser to spin around). It resizes the browser window then bounces it around the screen while you listen to Never Gonna Give You Up. If you try to close the tab/window you have to click OK through all of the lyrics to the song. It's not malicious or anything, just annoying (very).

To quote Glenni, "That site is like the armpit of the internet." I'm sure the other is the same.

Never go there, especially if you're an intelligent person.

Chris.

We're talking about THE anon imgboard? I'm going to have to defend and say you're making a generalization based on a single part of the forum. that's like saying, "all black people are thieves because all the black people I've seen are thieves", not true. The many other forums discuss geek hobbies and many intelligent discussions take place.

Well whatever it is, it convinces me all the more that the Internet is something serious enough for parents to pay more attention to.

Seeing all this censorship of website names is now making me think

 "Moderating. Serious business."

21.gif

Crazy part of it is, I know exactly what they're talking about. And I do believe I have mentioned that site before in different contexts and not had it been edited. Hmm...

I'm glad that members consider themselves sophisticated enough to understand what was posted. I now count on your maturity to no longer discuss it on this site. There are certain subjects, including the exploitation of others, that will NOT be tolerated here!

Can't say I blame him. 2.gif

Though the censorship is a bit extreme.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!  That's gotta be the funniest thing I've seen on the internet in a long time!

So anyways, lolcats sucks.  Whenever I see it, I get the urge to throw my laptop out a window.  Those (what are they?) *****(?) people should be locked in a room with a closed circuit local area network so they can only annoy each other rather than unleashing plagues of annoyance upon the world at large, especially because said plagues always end up in the hands of small-minded morons who pervert and overplay something that sucked in the first place.

Internet commenters are also morons.  Now, I'm not talking about forums like this where we're basically all just SimCity nerds hanging out (despite our many differences), I'm talking about Youtube (someone mentioned it above) where people post just the most idiotic [expletive withheld] you've ever read.  Sports websites also bring out the idiots who get into pissing contests about whose team is more awesome than others, and telling fans of opposing teams the equivalent of "suck it," only using much fouler language.  GOD that cartoon above is funny!17.gif

Wikipedia I don't mind so much, although it should be read with caution (like pretty much anything, I suppose).  I can't really think of anything else that pisses me off about the internet at the moment, so I'll finish my rant right here.

Weak? Nah, just a matter of taste.

Besides, while the "I can has cheeseburger?" crap isn't funny, that's not to say you can't do funny stuff in that sort of manner with cats or other animals.

Youtube obviously read this(considering it was featured on many sites) and has added a "Audio Preview" button where the "Post Comment" was(it's been moved to the right of the "Audio Preview").

chiming in...

i absolutely love wikipedia. it is one of the most helpful sites every to be created. i agree that in some cases it can be pretty damn accurate, and in fact more so than others forms of information because it is a collection of thousands of people's interpretations rather than a select few. i too agree that on the other hand it can sometimes be completely wrong or heavily-biased, but that also applies to textbooks and papers. they can be just as equally biased. you should never believe everything you read. don't take all things at face value. evaluate all available information (whether true, half-true, or false) and make your own mind up. wikipedia just acts as one particular source of finding a massive amount of information very quickly.

where i find it most useful is for finding out basic or sometimes more in-depth information on different subject such as maths, geography, local history, music, games, others forms of entertainment, etc. it is a huge time-saver as more often than not you can find the information you're after much quicker than if you had to trawl through different websites or search engine results. for more opinionated topics, i agree, it's less useful; but for simple and straight-forward undisputable factual information, it is great.

it's also pretty useful for finding out useless trivia - but i guess i should have said it's pretty useless for that purpose if you think about it 3.gif a simple example though, sometimes small curiosities can be explained quickly. i just thought moments ago about how certain things like "rickrolling" started, who did the first rickroll and how it became so widespread. things like that must have started somewhere. i'm sure there's a good chance i could look on wikipedia to find out very quickly compared to using other methods.

before the internet it would have been near-impossible or extremely time consuming to find out some of the more obscure or less-internationally known facts or even just trivia from around the whole world. information is good. knowledge is power.

the internet has a lot of bad things too but that is inevitable and just a reflection on society...

I find most Wikipedia mistakes are blatant, obvious, and easy to spot. The Aztecs were not conquered in 1993 and no, the Golden Age of Spain did not last 800 years. But these noticeable errors are usually corrected within two days, and those less obvious mistakes are a rarity. Wikipedia is an extremely useful asset for all forms of research.

You know... before YouTube comments, NYTimes comments, and all other internet comments, I actually had a slightly positive overall opinion of humanity in general. Now... Let's not go there.

That makes me very happy that almost nobody except ST people look at the videos I put there.

Ah yes, that was a good one. They made a couple sequels, "Internet Commenter Retirement Party" and "Internet Commenter Funeral". The retirement party was meh. The funeral one was good, but still not a s good as the business meeting.

In fact, this move was "big enough" that PC World decided to write an article about it.  3.gif
