The Quick and Skinny on Creating Old Time Looking Photos

All you need is Photoshop. I'm curently using Photoshop 5.5 for my pictures.
    3.gif>

1.)    Open your screen shot in Photoshop and use the selection tool to capture the area you want to use in your image.

2.)    Copy the selection and place it in a new Photoshop document in Grey scale mode. You can set the mode in the New Document dialog or after you paste your image under the Image menu is an Mode sub menu.

3.)    Make sure you are in Grey scale mode and then use the Brightness Contrast command to adjust the image's contrast. Set the contrast level to about +20 to +40. The contrast is actually too high, but early photographs weren't perfect.

    /idealbb/files/Photoshop

4.)    Now switch to RGB mode. You need to be in RGB mode to give the photo a sepia look and use some of the filters.

5.)    Once you are in RGB mode, under the Filter menu select Render>Lighting Effects

Here is a view of the city showing the path of the Great Fire...

    /idealbb/files/Chicago

Funny thing, my advisors suggested I enact the fire alarm ordinance! Also, my mayor rating decreased by 50%.

The redevelopment should take that polluted water away.
I have never seen my advisors suggest the Fire Alarm Ordinace, I guess I enact it before they even care.

You read my mind, I was going to ask how you make your photos. Well I won't now.

One suggestion. When it comes time to put in Navy Pier, there is an amusement pier on the LEX. I don't remember who made it, but I believe it is under recreation. It is basically an extended seaport lot, with some shops a lot of fun, and a ferris wheel. It may not look exactly like Navy Pier, but it should do the trick for you.

This is a very unique journal. Props to you for that.

As it happens, I'm the creator of that lot. It wasn't meant to be a replica of Navy Pier, but many people have remarked on its similarity to the real thing.

Anyway, great job so far! I'll be interested to see what you do for the FLW buildings in the next few decades.

Seems like everytime I comment on a city journal, I can only come up with the usual stuff... Looks great!  Wow!  Unbelievable!  *sigh*  Maybe I need to invest in a thesaurus or something...

Either way, this is one of the most ambitious and realistic journals ever.  The artwork is also incredible.  I'll continue following this one!!

Here is a quick panoramic... It is actually composed of three seperate regions. The game's demand caps were killing me so I had to place some things before their time (i.e. Soldier Field, University of Illinois)

The downtown is being rebuilt and it is looking nice... Commercial development is taking over and industry is receding some what.

I will create some more era shots soon, but I wanted share a feel for the larger city as a whole..

Wood your lot is a great one. I have it in a few of my coastal cities.

I didn't put in my post who it was made by, 'cause I couldn't remember. I didn't want to credit someone who didn't make it. Thanks for posting in here I'm glad I know who made it now.

And yes, I know it isn't Navy pier, and it doesn't even look exactly like, but for SC4 terms, it does the trick.

    Zeb:

I really like your new region shot, with the pics all put together. I can see how the city has started in one spot and spread out like a bacterial colony.

This really is the first tall building of the city, and it really did appear at year 85... Over 10 stories and a wedding chapel to boot!

I am now working on the Chicago Loop! One of the rails runs right behind this building here. With those maps I got from silkcut312, I've been able to get it pretty accurate. Girlfriend permitting, I'll have some shots up tonight...

This image shows the South West corner of the loop. The passenger rail station and the El Train station work really well together moving people all over the place.

I got the terrain from here in the Map Exchange. I had to create a new config file and then do a lot of work using SimCity terrain tools to fix all the problems. The terrain map from the MEX isn't very good. I've noticed now that my north side of the canal is a bit off, it needs about 30% more land. If you can figure out a way, I will send you the actual region. Its about 16 or 20mb zipped I think.

I believe someone mentioned the Columbian Exposition. Are you going to simulate this, and if so, how?

Of course, this also leads to discussion of the Century of Progress . . .

Cool!! I'd love to see it ... it is actually quite fun, I'm learning a ton about Chicago and now want to visit and check out all of this stuff. My girlfriend wants me to do London next. Which brings me to why my updates have slowed down ... heheh, she is getting jealous of my computer and wants more attention... and also wants to play her game the Sims. Hopefully I'll get a couple more sim years put in soon tho.

The Columbian Exposition ... I don't know how much I will be able to simulate, I don't think I actually put in the train around it and all that, we'll see.

The whole canal could be smaller.. I am also trying to create Chicago .. I do it for every simcity .. The map I got from MEX, I had to lower the water giving a beter eye, and easier way to terraform the land.. It looks really nice and realistic, but when I was laying out the grid.. the map was way to small so I have to enlarge it (I plopped the John Hancock building and it was way off scale).. but I for some reason can get it to work. I'll keep trying tho.

Oh, and yeah I can see how the Columbian Expo. will be difficult to recreate, unlike the great fire .. which was done on purpose prolly.. I found it odd that how the fire spread, and the time it happened. In 1870, the railroad was finished (the trnscontinental railway?) steel was being only used for that purpose only .. so when the r/r was complete they didn't know what to keep the demand up .. Well after the great fire, chicago became the first true skyscraper city. The fire just happened where all of the current skyscrapers are. Then again I could be just a paranoid architecture student. 3.gif

Has anyone else seen this in their game? I was just scrolling over the city and then there is this guy, floating by in a lawnchair attached to several balloons!

Here is another image of the city ... some major development is occuring downtown now. All of that without a single airport. You'll notice that I've done a little work on the canal ... more pictures of that later.

You have chosen a very challenging way to build, and an even more challenging way to create your journal.
