What Do You Think About Cities XL?

This afternoon I went surfing on the Cities XL site looking for screenshots of the game. What I saw was amazing! I fell in love right away, so this is the thread to discuss, What Do You Think About Cities XL?

What really caught me was the landscapes. Some of the things you can witness is snowcapped mountains and pristine water.

Check it out for yourself.

The buildings are okay, the texture on some buildings are a little boring. The textures on most buildings are well done and look good. I must say, the buildings are focused more on to older buildings and a little less modern. In the slideshow they had modern buildings but the city that they showed look like New York only a few.

View the slideshow.

The streets are curvy not diagonal and strait or not grid like (like SC4). The cars look more realistic than the ones of SimCity 4.

The only city shown so far is the one I called the New York like one. Only a few buildings are older, not most that was my mistake. (By New York like, not buildings are like New York the colours are like New York.)

The New York like city.

The 3D looks good. It has the view tools kind of like SCS. There's the Skyline View, High View and Satilite View.

You can build your own city on the internet. That is how you access the Earth Mod. More information will come later...

Cities XL.com

There is zones and RCI buildings like SC4. I'm not too sure if there's high density, medium and low density but I think there is... That is a big step up from SCS.

These are just my opinions and facts I learned. You do not have to register on the site to view the pages. My rating is 8/10 but it will change as time and work moves on.

Predicted realese date: August 09, 2009

They have not revealed much about the transportation system, which will be crucial for my rating on the game. However, from what I've seen, the buildings look pretty good, and the landscape, the trees, and especially the water.

If the transit networks have the same variety as the landscape, I'd give it a 9/10.

However, my current rating based on what I have seen is 7/10. This will change as more data comes in.

I have a nitpick here: According to the screenshots, the stoplights are still not right. They should be placed on the FAR side of the intersection FROM the the lane its controlling. You don't see stoplights placed before an intersection in the real world. I mean, how on earth would you be able to see them then?

I am also curious as to weather a Linux version of this game will be released. Although its doubtful that a Linux version will be released; I will not, for the life of me, upgrade to Windows Vista. I've tried it and hated it. Halo 2 and 3 aren't worth that price.

First, Mysteryous, you should travel as in most of the countries in the world, the stoplights are placed as in the given screenshots. 4.gif

In the US and some other countries, they are on the far side...

As for the Linux version, we already answered in the FAQ present in the website: we are aiming to release a Windows XP and Vista version for now. Maybe later we'll look at other operating systems but that's not the purpose for now. So no need to move to Vista if you don't want to, you can still use XP. 4.gif

Cheers,

What we see is what we like. You make a great game. We make great comments, and we play the game. We can't wait until the game is realesed due to the fact that no one like SCS or maybe SCC. I wish you the best of luck with the game and I can't wait for it. 5.gif

Not for the time being hamish, I'm sorry but we are dedicating our efforts on the Windows XP & Vista release. This may be an option later.

However, I run myself boot camp in my mac book pro and the dev version works like a charm on it. 4.gif

Take a look at the 2 videos:

    Part I

    Part II

dasiva: The game is looking great. I really can't wait until it is realesed!!

I like it overall. I like the curved tunnels, the road textures, and the bridges. Some things I noticed were unanswered. Will we be able to choose what style of bridge we build? Will we be able to choose what style of piers we use for the elevated segments?

Other than these questions, the game looks very good. I love the landscape. It looks so real I could touch it.

I will looking forward to more videos about CXL. When or if I see differing highways with RHW-like ramps and with an easy customization tool, you can count me as a potential buyer.

I'll tell you what...Im more amped about this than Gears Of War 2..the next Halo COMBINED!!!.......

What im interested in is the ability to terraform...

Also honestly I wanna see how they go about making seawalls,etc...I hope we don't have to goto a bunch of terraforming to put in some decent seawalls.

BTW...Im gonna make sure my PC has atleast 3 or 4gb of RAM..I wanna be prepared!!!

I was surfing the site this morning and I found something that interested me. Probably you to.

Transportation in Cities XL. This is just a forum board and it may or may not happen but it does include alot of useful stuff like:

An interchange maker was talked about for using on the highways and roads.

Trains are another big thing. They want to have 7 different types of rail networks.

Something different is the road functions. You can turn off the road construction.

Another proposal is Automatic Street Name Function. It names the streets for you.

How's this for all of you multi-lane highway fans. A custom road wizard. It is so cool I'll quote it.

    Quote: Jack Smith
Use this Thread to show your pictures of how The 'Roadway Wizard' in Cities XL should be!

    Heres my one!

You click a Road Icon and...

    roadwayartfd8.th.jpg (CLICK TO ZOOM IN)

You Select what type of Road you want and then you locate the Road by clicking on the gray box.

Once you've done that it gives you some customization tools like how many lanes you want, nature strip or parking lane and whatever!

It gives you an option of creating extras like road signs and street lamps, driving on your road or just continuing with the game!

    quote>

    Why won't the quote end!!??

That's all I can fit for now. Maybe more for later.

If this little tool gets in the game, then I'd be anxious for CXL to come out. This is what the fans want.

7 types of rail networks? I'd like to have that as well.

The only thing thats keeping me worried is the building styles. The NY themes are great, but I want styles such as country-rual, spanish, ultramodern, smalltown/suburb ect. I couldnt handle working with boring NY styles.

I think ths is what we have waited for. Hopefully it is the same as SimCity but with the obvious upgrade in graphics. I am still hoping for power plants and a budget... everything that makes creating a working city a challenge. From what I have seen it is extremely realistic looking.

In my opinion this is SimCity 6. It has skipped a generation and is as good as a city building game can "look" at this time. Lets hope the game play follows threw.

dasilva: Are you sure of which transit networks there is or is it a secret. (Examples of transit networks: Avenues, Highways etc.)

    Or are they secrets...

No secrets, we want to have you with multiple lanes but we didn't defined as of yet what would be the standard transit options. FOr sure, you'll have 2 and 4 road lanes and probably 6 road lanes for highways but at the end it'll be up to you to build your own if you want to get into such details.

Basically there should be enough options to start of with upon release, to make a good city: and you will be free to develop your own types of networks as you get experienced. The customization applies to many parts of the game as well, including the sunsets.

whoo- we got tuns of options already!!!! this game has so many great features its crazy. All these little minute needs and wants can prolly be solved here in the custom community. I know I am getting geared up to release a tun of buildings for the game. I've been getting better at my uvunwrap skills and learning how to properly texture large detail surfaces. I might start using Z-brush for high model normal map baking so I can swap out to a lower poly model. But maybe i wont need to do that.

    I love coffee and buildings.

dasilva: Yet another question (lol). We are all eager to how customizable the game is.

    There is a scale: 1 to 3

1: Can't add anything you can only modify a bit.

2: Can add new things but not as much like new transit networks.

3: Can modyfie everything (we wish that you say 3.)

Love the cury roads, curved tunnels and bridges, no more fiddling around with puzzle pieces, the trailers made it look so incredibly easy to make them. Can't wait for the game to come out, this is a game that says it will run on Vista, hopefully it actually will run on vista!

The new videos are a pleasant suprise. Although I would caution some members to avoid being overly optimistic/ambitious in thier requests... That will only lead to disappointment.

So far everything seems great with this game! When will it be released? I will make sure to get a copy.. as for mods etc., how will that work? Will we be able to add buildings like we do with sim city on the stex? Anyway, this game is more than interesting..

From a visual aspect the game so far looks good but I am more interested in the mechanics of how the game will play out. I have purchased every simcity game over the years and now as an adult gamer I wish for more complex games requiring more lateral thinking rather than just pretty graphics. Hence for me micromanagement is a key.

For instance what I am hoping MC will do is add in the economics of a city through the use of supply and demand for goods and services, hence creating industries and jobs, leading to taxation revenue and then expenditure. Example: resource-cattle, primary production-dairy farm, secondary production-milk processing plant, and finally retail outlet-supermarket. This chain is applied to goods and services throughout the city/region (including imports/exports).

Don't hark me if this has been covered before because I am too lazy to read all posts. Now some people may say this will impact on the game's performance and rightly so but perhaps they could offer add-ons to cater for the different demographics of pc players. The basic game will satisfy new comers while the add-ons add more micromanagement etc, allowing these players who can afford high spec platforms to run the game effectively.

I recall playing SC4 when starting a new city that my first commercial building always seemed to be a used car lot. For heavens sake don't new cities/towns require food first?

Anyway Philippe if you are reading this post it might be something to consider.

    Cheers
