Simlympic Forums at SimSports

What is the Simlympics?

The Simlympics is a Sim City 4 version of the Olympics. Just like the Olympics, cities bid to host the Simlympics and nations all across the world compete during the Simlympics to win medals. Simple, right?

Tell me more about Bidding...

Bidding is the first stage in the Simlympics, if there are no bids, there is no host and if there is no host there is no Simlympics. A couple of months before the Simlympics takes place, bidding opens and cities are invited to bid for the chance of hosting the Simlympics. Then at a later date, bidding closes and the ISC (International Simlympic Committee) votes for which bid they think is the best. The winning bid then becomes the host of the next Simlympics!

At the moment bidding is currently closed as we're focused on the August Simlympics, for more information please see the August Simlympics thread at ST or visit our forums.

However, you're welcome to post in the possible future bids section of our forums here or in this thread. The next Simlympics will be taking place sometime this winter.

Tell me more about Competing...

Any SC4 city or nation is free to compete in the Simlympics; and it's really easy to sign up. All you need to do is post here using the template below, fill in the form on our website or post on our forums.

Username -

CJ/Nation/City Name -

Link to CJ -

Union/Geographical Alliance -

(Either; North America, Eurasia/Africa, SCJU, Adrian Union, IPON or COFR)

All of the cities/nations then compete during the Simlympics in 50 sports (List can be viewed here) over a period of two weeks.

Tell me anything else I may find interesting...

ParaSimlympics

Accompanying the Simlympics is the ParaSimlympics, the ParaSimlympics consist of four sports: Wheelchair Athletics, Goalball, Swimming and Boccia.

The ParaSimlympics gives disabled Sims an opportunity to participate in the Simlympics as well as providing a unique set of sports for the spectators to watch.

ISC Sessions

The ISC meet a month or so before the Simlympics begins to vote on which bid should be the host of the next Simlympics. This session takes place somewhere in the Sim World, and your city could be that place. If you're interested in hosting an ISC session please click here.

August Simlympics

The next Simlympics will be taking place in August, hosted by Penthesili. We have a seperate thread for the August Simlympics which can be seen here.

Thanks, and any questions just post and someone will get back to you 4.gif.

    Hey,

There isn't a form for bidding on the website. If you want to bid, either post your bid in our bidding thread on Simtropolis or on our forums, which you can find a link to in my signature. Hope that helps.

Well it looks like I'm gonna place a bid...only one problem, I'll be gone most of august, so I may wait for the next Simlympics for my bid. Anyway, Calioshire and Quintessa would most definitely be interested in hosting these games. For more information, visit Calioshire in the Candyland thread here:

    https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=90737&STARTPAGE=9

I'll give a brief overview of the Calioan Simlympic Economic Overview and Development Plan.:

Calioshire has an extensive number of stadiums and other areas for biking and watersports. Arenas are scattered across the region but are connected by high-speed electric trains that can carry passengers on its 210-MPH system across the region in less than 10 minutes.

The stadiums/arenas themselves are in populated areas with plenty of open space for the expansion of the stadiums. Parking is plentiful for car drivers while pedestrian malls span the largest cities. An extensive freeway system snakes along the northern mountains, often intertwining with the even larger railroad system.

Calioshire is a large, well-developed country with a stable government and one of the world's largest economies, only falling behind the US in most statistics. This is due to recent advances in hydroponics agriculture and alternitive energy. Gas stations are available for foreign drivers, along with hydrogen depots for local drivers. Calioshire maintains friendly foreign diplomatic relations with the outside world, specifically the United States, Canada, and Australia. The currency of the nation is valuable compared to many other nations; therefore the government has suggested a partnership discount program for countries with low exchange rates compared to the Calio Cash and Calio Coins.

Calioshire is home to several large cities, most bordering the Calioshire River. The capital, Rowenta, backs up directly to he densely-forested mountains, Wamsutta offers dramatic views of the eastern valley from its skyscrapers, and Kensington serves as the nation's trading center and is the site of the country's tallest building.

Though it is mostly an island nation, it has quick delivery systems to import and export vital goods every day. Calioshire acts as a psychological buffer state; for example, the enemies of Calioshire's allies are actually our allies. Because of this, we have successfully relieved tensions between other superpowers such as the US, China and Russia.

Calioshire has a very high HDI index and an incredibly high GDP, both total and per capita. Our neighboring ally, Quintessa, shares similar statistics and venues and would be our partner for the Simlympics. Combined, the two nations have every possible venue covered for every sport; the Paralympics could also be held here. These nations would be comfortable in either the summer or winter Simlympics.

Please don't torture yourself by reading all that unless you think it is necessary.

Click on my sig for pictures of the Calioshire region.

Pictures later, if I place a formal bid-this was just an outline and all the boring logistics.

Again, don't consider my bid unless my absence won't be a problem. I could just as easily show all the pics for the next Simlympics and be ready for them. I have everything ready, so it's all good.

    Thanks!

    IDS

Port Matthew will place a bill. They feel that hosting the Simlympics within site of the Cliffs (a veritable home of Gods [the Defenders] a la Olympus) would be appropriate, and it is definitely quite a scenic and beautiful city. The expansion of parks and a new waterfront makes this choice a very good one!

    Username - NMUSpidey

CJ/Nation/City Name - Port Matthew and Vicinity

Link to CJ - Port Matthew and Vicinity

Union/Geographical Alliance - In the North Pacific Ocean, between Alaska and Hawaii and east of Midway (about 35 degrees N Latitude), an independent nation.  That makes us North American!

Here is the official Port Matthew bid: our athletic sites, starting with Simlympic Park and working towards Southport.

    2676525772_aace89c95f_o.jpg

Simlympic Park was built in Stranahan Hills to play host to track and field and swimming events.  It is a very attractive area with easy access to the rail network, the highway, and the monorail.

    2675705933_07fd81ed48_o.jpg

    And from the other direction.

    2675705807_95321de5c4_o.jpg

The Simlympic Mall is a very popular shopping area.

    2675706223_452fe9a4c9_o.jpg

And in Southport near PMU and the Thunder Bowl sits Competition Arena, built to house ping pong, basketball, and any number of other indoor sports (sorry about the grid).

It's a thriving city with a population of over 620,000 people in a region of well over 1.3 million.  It would be a mistake not to consider this beautiful location for the Simlympics!

Wow, Haljackey, that place is huge! Quite the jungle, neat city.

Spidey, I like your highways, but a bit of leveling is needed in the city. Awesome place though, I really like the trees and seawalls, nice city.

Calioshire: Northwest Atlantic Ocean (most of Atlantic Canada was taken over 3.gif)

Quintessa: An offshore island nation nearby

    Both North American!

Links to CANDYLAND throughout this bid are available for your convenience.

Both regions are very scenic with many waterways for water sports and large mountain ranges for biking, etc. Each region has excellent transport networks to ensure no trip between stadiums takes more than 15 minutes. Airplanes, ferries, and a subway tunnel connect the two regions. Services are available to cater to every patron's needs, including religion, language, and transportation flexibility.

Here are some pics of the venues and their wonderful scenic surroundings:

    Key: Red=mountains/water, blue=transport, yellow= under construction, green=stadiums/arenas

Quintessa: little quick map I did in paint in 5 min.

    venuemap1cu9.jpg

Calioshire venue map: similar coloring. Green dots are all available stadiums/arenas or other land venues. yellow=water, red=mountain, blue=transport.

    calioshirevenuemaplq4.jpg

Sorry for the crude maps. Now for the good stuff!

First draft of the logo: used for pamphlets and flyers.

    olympiclogo1copygs1.jpg

I have a better one, don't worry. This one is used for commercial uses e.g. posters. It has the old New York 2014 logo in it, but I think that's OK since this is just a game. the rest is my work.

Calioshire/Quintessa Simlympics - Where Else, you ask?

    Don't ask! There's no answer

    Err...perhaps a bit obnoxious?

    No! We mean it!

Time for some other random shots of the region, including nature shots and a panorama!

Ironbrook Bridge and Rose Island, Sharon Inlet, Quintessa.

    ironbrookbridgecopynt9.jpg

Boulder Creek Bridge, Sharon Inlet, Quintessa.

    bouldercreekbridgecopyem2.jpg

Finally, a panorama of Port Biloxi, One of the major cities in Quintessa. Full size version exclusive to my cj coming soon!

    portbiloxipanoramacopyte7.jpg

This concludes today's bid. I'll open a thread at the site with all information!

All right! Here's more of the bid, highlighting several venues in the city of Dumbarton Bay and their surroundings. Starting off with a nature shot of what is locally called Black Mountainside, similar to the Black Hills.

    blackmountainsidetw5.jpg

Next up is Red Hill Center, a shopping and low wealth residential district with several attractions. Several surrounding stores can be seen, along with the western wealthy sector and the eastern housing projects.

    dumbartonbaydec26231216ga2.jpg

Another shot of the housing projects and Red Hill Center. Sorry its a little blurry for site resizing.

    dumbartonbaydec26231216zk7.jpg

Here's one stadium intended for soccer but can be converted for several sports: it is near downtown hence the highrises. Underground parking available at all venues.

    dumbartonbaydec26231216fb4.jpg

Here's a shot of the northern section of town, near Westbrook Forest Wildlife Preserve. Seen in the picture is St. Mary's Cathedral. Funding for the cathedral was provided by Gene and Roger Newman, two brothers in the masonry business. They have an ice arena and federal building named after them, as seen in the picture.

    dumbartonbaydec26231216mm1.jpg

Westbrook Aquatic Center: one of many swimming pools in the Dumbarton Area.

    dumbartonbaydec26231216fv3.jpg

Christine Castle: Built in the early 1200s on a small island when Quintessa belonged to the Vikings. (Keep in mind this region is in the northwest Atlantic,  just Northeast of the US.

    dumbartonbaydec26231216iz4.jpg

St. Joseph's Hospital for any needs of patients coming to the region.

    dumbartonbaydec26231216dk6.jpg

Here are two large venues just outside of downtown near Red Hill: Topaz Ampitheatre and Adobe Stadium.

    dumbartonbayjan42412166ql8.jpg

Dumbarton Bay Civic Center: With several gathering halls for table tennis, judo, etc.

    dumbartonbayjan42412166dr8.jpg

    Dumbarton Bay Farmers Market:

    dumbartonbayjan42412166mo8.jpg

Another multipurpose stadium to be converted:

    dumbartonbayjan42412166nn5.jpg

Here is Southport Field for baseball: yes I like the Maxis stadiums, so what they work. 3.gif

    dumbartonbayjan42412166ow1.jpg

Finally, here is Green Hill Center, near Red Hill Center just not as big and intended for upper class sims:

    dumbartonbayjan42412166pj8.jpg

Thanks for checking out today's bid!

As you can see there are several basic venues, but more sophisticated ones are coming. Trust me, this bid is going to get better. I have the park planned, its awesome. 3.gif

Oh, okay, I get it now. Simple random selection. Easily done by =RAND in excel.

I've played some "fantasy olympics", and it would get a bit more complicated than that: certain countries tended to specialise in certain sports, and then we had a lot more events (for example, in Judo, various weight classes and genders). I also simulated tournaments for the team sports.

I do think it would be neat to let the entering nations have a set number of points to allocate for their entries in various sports - i.e. a country could enter a bunch of athletes in track and field but maybe not hardly any in swimming, etc. but that would be alot of work for the one running the show.

I also think it would be neat to see the "top 10" instead of the top 3 - hey, top 10 in the world is pretty good, even if it's a Simworld.

Yeah, we had a system that let users assign points to which sports their nation was good at. However, only like 4 people bothered =/, so I got rid of the idea.

saathoff37: Thanks, added to the competitors list.
