Leech10 Since the air force has not yet finished forming, the group captains help to train the enlisted personnel. We have plenty of hot air balloons and hang gliders... perhaps they can be retrofitted with crossbows and catapults...

East Tenne: Haven

Knoxvegas, the island town off the southeastern coast of Tenne, is the region's first town and administrative center. Once a sleepy frontier outpost at the far edge of a nation, the town of about eight thousand souls mushroomed virtually overnight to a bustling city of over twenty thousand. The influx of citizens relocated from eastern areas fleeing combat areas has swelled the population and encouraged a population and infrastructure density unseen in Schulmania before. After all, this is a relatively small island. So, buildings became taller and the upper town became far more crowded. The lower town, where most residences are located, grew skyward as well. Single family residences were demolished as taller structures took their places and stood should-to-shoulder, lining the roads around the islands. The rapid growth and the need to govern such a concentrated segment of the population led the Supreme Wirdle to appoint Prince Spookie as Viceroy of Tenne.

The stately old Tenne capitol building still has its prominent position in the upper town, but it is now surrounded by newer and bigger buildings. From this lovely stone building, Prince Spookie will govern a much larger percentage of the nation's population.

A new city hall in a compatible building style site behind the capitol and a larger municipal church now flank Market Square.

Among the improvements in the area, the old four classroom Orange Academy was replaced with the massive new East Tenne University, the first full-scale institution of higher learning in Tenne. Just a few blocks from the capitol, ETU is one of the many services demanded by the influx of eastern residents. Other public services added include new museums, libraries, hunting grounds and sunning plazas. Rumor has it that ETU will soon start a comprehensive and competitive sports program. Athletic Director Cat Clawson reports that intercollegiate teams for pouncing, tree climbing, and others are now being formed.

The Supreme Wirdle herself came to dedicate the new campus. She also dedicated a statue of Governor Cawale, whose generous financial support helped to build the college. Governor Cawale was delighted to have her statue gracing the new student pedestrian plaza. Cawale also dedicated the Cawale's Meatloaf Café, whose outdoor seating brightens up the plaza on sunny days. It is one of the students' most favorite places for dining.

Students and full time residents both mostly live in the newly urbanized lower town, downhill from upper town and occupying the southern half of the island. Housing forms a series of loop roads, lines with residences and filled with parkland.

Planned green space offers the crowded city's residents the opportunity to run, pounce, or just lie on the plaza and snooze. Why not climb a tree? Hungry? The new viceroy stocks all fountains with yummy and slow-moving fish. Just reach in and snag one.

With such a concentration of population, the small island has been growing upward because there is nowhere to grow outward. In addition to a densely built lower town, the commercial upper town is flourishing. The added schulmonetas and commercial traffic has driven retail and office buildings to new, unprecedented heights. Still in keeping with the architectural precepts of Knoxvegas' older buildings and Schulmanicus' iconic Temple Style structures, these larger structures have carved out their own architectural niche - the Temple Revival Style.

At right, the taller building, the Temple Revival office, the First Tenne Bank Corporate Center, is not just the bank's headquarters but also home to many local businesses and services. Among the businesses in the landmark structure are Mary, Little & Lamb Accounting, Elite Eight Volunteers of Greater Tenne, and Fazoli's Wholesale Spaghetti Distributors.

The business district includes the fabulous Knoxburg Mall. Let's hope that problems on the eastern frontier won't cause shortages at the many new stores located here.

And, for those of us keeping score at home, the quarter ends on the 31st and it will be time for another round of Schulmania posting awards. All who attain the rank of centurion and above may be enrolled as an officer.
