Hi...

I have a couple of basic Mac/Sim City 4 questions...

First off.  I have been playing for years on my PC.  But Ive made the switch to a MacPro and Im now wondering if Im gonna need to buy a new version for my Mac.  I saw at the store yesterday they had on that said PC-version right on the box in big letters.  So whats the deal with the versions?

Ah, welcome to the world of Mac! Now, I'm assuming you purchased a newer Mac, in which case it is one of the Intel processors; which means that with Mac Bootcamp (which I'm going to assume you have Mac OS Leopard, or whatever the newest one is. . .) you can install Windows on your Mac! Doing this will not require you to buy a new copy of SC4. On the other hand, if you do not want to have both Windows and Mac OS on your computer, then you will need to purchase a Mac compliant copy of SC4, as Windows software is not compatible with Mac. Hope that helps!

I think he has a mac book.

Don't know if they come with what is called bootcamp, which is used to install windows on macs. So search for it, if it does, I hope you still have you're windows installer. If it doesn't either but one, or go to a mac store and have a look and see if they have a SC4 mac version.

    Ok...

    I got a new MacPro.  3.2 (8X) processor...

2 gigs ram (to start with)

    320 Hdd.

It has i believe OS 10 or 10.5 on it.  I dont know how to check that yet...

I had a version of Sim City that i swear was a dual cd.  for PC/Mac.  That Got smashed one day.  Then I go to best buy to get one and I saw Sim City for 19.99 and I thought that was such a good deal that I snapped it up.  Its not till i open the shrink wrap that i see the PC only ***** on the box.

i have a macbook pro intelbase and still tiger..MAC OSX10.4

the MAc version of SIM CITY 4 is actually meant for the PowerPC based... it can be played on Intel based though based on my experience its not that appealing. I have sent an email to Aspyr and they said they are crrently no intelbased Sim City 4.

If I were you, I ll use the Windows version to play via the Boot camp.

I might be wrong...What do the others say?

MartyMcFly, by MacPro, I assume you mean the laptop!?

If it is the newest one then it should have an intel processor. So if you want to keep your SC4 game you can install windows on part of the machine, if you have it.

If not, buy the mac version. And the mac version will work on an intel processor mac.

By the way, your version should be MacOSX 10.5. To check it, click on the little apple symbol on the top of your screen and click "About This Mac" and it should say the version.

Aspyr has issued a patch for SC4 for Mac to make it a Universal Binary (it will run on both PPC and Intel chips natively) this has been the case for more than a year. There are some minor issues with the Mac version, but by following the Mac Omnibus most of those can be solved. The Mac version will allow you to use the full power of your machine (as running in Parallels or VM Ware Fusion only allow limited access to your system, and Boot Camp is a pain). Enjoy, TEG

Nope Hamish...Its a regular tower type Mac. NOT a laptop. I didnt even know they made a macpro laptop...

I think Im gonna try what teg24601 says.  Thats why I wanna even bother to try it anyways.  To see if it will run like it should run on a mac...

No, the iMac is the all-in-one. The Mac Pro is more powerful (and expensive), with a PCish tower.  But this argument isn't accomplishing anything, and either way, it has an Intel processor, so your advice should hold true.

I'd contact EA.. I bet if you talked to them they may arrange for you to exchange your new copy for a MAC version. Kind of a hassle but may beat buying (or hunting for) a MAC version in stores and having a left over pc version

    OK.

I have found that the PC version sells for $19.99.  And that any online place that does sell the MAC version sells it for at least $45.00-$60.00  *****?

I have also found out that maxis or EA doesnt make Sim City 4 RH for the MAC.  They must hand it off to Aspyr to port the game or something.

So i know I can get the game from Amazon or something.  But I guess my question is...is there a place that I can go that Just specializes in Mac games only?  Somewhere where I can just browse a big list and look or something?  Thats what I am looking for.  Otherwise a hint to the cheapest price for a Mac version of Sim City 4 RH...

No, only aspyr make the Mac versions. Well, they don't make them, they make them able to run on macs.

Yeah, the price is a bit steep.

Try a Mac store, if there is one around where you live. If not then the internet would be the best place to get it off.

And remember that you want either the deluxe version or Sim city 4 and also Rush hour. Not just RH.

Marty take a walk into any Apple retail store and they have a wall of software. I just bought a copy of SimCity for the Mac as I was sick of either booting up a PC or running bootcamp. Just bought it like a couple of weeks ago.

I run 10.4 btw so I don't know about the 10.5 issues. I just think 10.5 caused too many problems to upgrade.

I am on a Macbook Pro btw. It runs fine with an occasional crash. I ran the beta Universal update and THEN ran the 1.02 update. I think it is more stable than running it the way they suggest which is to run the 1.02 and then the Universal update.

Just a note, the Universal update seems to be a little schizophrenic. There are people like stidesx for who it works fine, then there are people like me, for who it makes the game unplayable (1st gen Intel iMac, running 10.4). My suggestion, install the 1.02 update, play for a little bit, then install the Universal update. If it runs fine, then great, keep it. But if it seems to create more problems than it solves (jerky scrolling, crashes when you have the sheer nerve to attempt to plop a lot), back up your plugins, then reinstall without the universal update (but with the 1.02 update).

I have an Aluminum iMac. The first generation. 2.4 GHZ Core 2, etc. I can not use the universal update, it runs poor. Yet doing the video-card hack makes mine work great. Its a thread in here, few months old.
